A piece of advice for you. However you have to work the situation out, get it done BEFORE pilot training starts. You'd be surprised how often relationship problems are the cause of washouts from UPT. Our only dropout from our class was going through a nasty divorce at the time, and couldn't handle that and the stress of training at the same time. Also (and you've probably already done this), make it very clear to her that while you're in training, it's a lot of give on her part and a lot of take on your part. It sounds selfish, but that's the way it is. Make sure you make it up to her after you're done with UPT.

I can't speak for all the branches of the military, but in the Air Force, education is heavily emphasized. There are many programs through which you can get free (or greatly reduced cost) college and grdaduate level education. Most of the First Shirt's i've met (the good ones, anyway) encourage the young airmen under their charge to take advantage of every educational opportunity available to them. Combined with a good service record, college classes make you look better on paper when it comes time for promotions. Because the "one or two exceptions", i.e. the ones who commit the hate crimes, would cause the trouble by perpetrating attacks against openly homosexual people in the military. Just one attack is a large problem. Put simply, a few exceptions to the rule could cause a lot of problems if there were percieved targets for them to go after.
