The "what can we do about skyride II" thread has become its own entity. I'm afraid that if we dont take legal action against this thread immediately, that it may ruin this sport forever. I'm afraid that it will grow to a epic proportion and actually replace skydiving altogether. Instead of people going to the DZ on Saturday to jump, they will simply put on thier diaper, log on and discuss the fine details of business ehtics and relive the "good ol days" when skydiving involved real crimes like murder, sabotage, drugs, and pieced together jumpships. well first of all the numbers are going to Cedartown because thats where the full time staff is, so it only makes sense. Second of all Cedartown isnt Skyride. Two seperate operations. There is a legitimate Dz within a hour of nashville. So they are not "neglegently" advertising. Its 100 percent for real prescence in Tn. If you dont believe me ask the USPA. i dont know about the mentality of the "skyride camp". But it is an example of my moral priorities. I jump one alot clint. the openings are usually great with the exception of the hard turn that mine sometimes goes into. I unstow the brakes and counter it to straighten it out. I attribute this to the radical elliptical design. Toggle pressure is light but the canopy does have a problem in turbulent conditions. I'm guessing its from the shallowness of the last few cells? If I remember right I believe the manufacturer even warns against turbulent conditions. I've had no problem with it in steady wind. But gusty wind or flying over a thermal surface low is scary with this canopy. Great canopy in smooth conditions. going on weather hold or jumping another canopy if its inconsistent winds. anyway,...... thats my take on it. apparently bilvon is the only one that gets it. Peopel who want to skydive still learn to skydive. Are you telling me that the grandma's, grandpa's, the prissy girls, and the broke ass college students that I took on tandems this weekend would have otherwise done AFF and become "regulars"? Tandems do not hurt retention. To think so is idiotic. Tandems do not stop people from wanting to skydive. I think its a great intro into the sport. It made me want to come back and do AFF. If a tandem wants a thril ride they get it. If they want to learn they do. Thats that tandem instructors work hard to bond with thier passengers/students and give people a good experience. I hear all the time "You have the best job in the world" I tell them they are right and they could too. I tell them that I started just like they did...A TANDEM! I tell them some of the things I love about the sport including the social aspects(beer drinking and childish behavior). I tell them here put your hands in these loops and I'll tell you how to steer. If the passenger is a 70 yr old woman, then I'm probably not offering to let her deploy or steer unless she ask. I'm pretty sure she isnt coming back to learn. Well I'll try this again, because I love the abuse. The question is will youtube draw attention to this. The videos on youtube arent promoting anything. They are basicaly just peoples personal videos that are not for sale. Everyone agrees this is legal. Now if they track down videographers that are making a habit of using copyrighted music, arent they going to find that its being done for someones personal video that is going to be shown to friends and family and not mass produced and resold? which is the exacct situation that you all agreed is NO BIG DEAL. Besides I havent put music on a tandem video since Buddha knows when. I have the student put their. own music on it as I leave the room. THen I let them push "make movie". Its in my wiaver that purchase of video includes the video and video editing only. No audio edits outside of the original. This way it was there personal choice for their personal video. no I certainly dont expect USPA to do anything. I see your point about youtube. Thats one thing thats different then when i looked into it. Youtube wasnt such a monster then. Hey like I said, when I looked into it I never got good clear answers or consistent answers. It souded "grey" to me. I didnt mean to insult you guys. I hope to God that some one doesnt ever think that me putting a song that I bought, on one individuals video is worth messing with. Afterall my video and services is what is being sold, not the music in the background. I believe lawyers could nit pick this stuff til the sun went down. I got the impression that no one thought skydiving videos was a big enough market to even draw any attention. Although with youtube maybe it will. What about this though what if the tandem student put there own music on their own video. Then technically they didnt purchase this from you. Then since its their own video for thier own personal use there wouldnt be a violation right? Or how bout this you dont charge them for editing you only charged them your service of filming the jump. You edited it for free and used music that was purchased legally for thier personal use. This way you didnt sell them anything with music in it. There has to be many ways to get around this. So many different ways to structure a defense. I think thats where the "Grey" and the loopholes enter the equation. Hopefully no skydiver ever has to answer for something so petty and stupid. Its my understanding that its perfectly legal to use others music in something like a tandem video. First of all you arent mass producing this product and selling it in stores. So i doubt anyone will ever care. It wouldnt be worth sueing you for. Also, the copyright laws are full of "grey" area. I read one that states as long as the copyrighted material wasnt the primary content that it was legal to use. So basically as long you arent marketing it as a "van Halen music video" you would be in the clear. I think it falls under something called public domain. ITs been a long time since I looked into it. I dont feel like spending another 2 days of my life trying to learn copyright law. I do know I talked to alot of people in the communications and production business. micro sigma with icarus 330. Once again the hop isnt bad excpet in windy or turbulent conditions(which is most of the time). The sigma canopies arent bad either. Since they are made by PD it would be hard for them to suck. The openings however are a little wierd to me. The strong harness is SHIT! Its one of the worst things about the system. I'm not sure why but they are way different than the sigma's. at least %90 of all my students have complained about the harness digging into their shoulders and/or the leg straps. I also noticed a way more freuent occurence of students getting sick or light headed in the strong harness than the sigma. The strong drogue release handle placements and design are inferior as well. Those stupid buckles break. The velcro wears out. Then you have floating handles and premature openings. They require much more preventive maintenance. the bungee retention "mod" is just a ghetto fix not a "mod". Sure the strong system is functional, durable, and reasonably safe, but the system design is old, unchanged, and has basically been ignored, forgotten, and neglected by the manufacturer since its original design. Bottom line. Strong could do better but they choose not too. I also like the skyhook on the sigma. there is no doubt that the sigma will win the popular vote. Its simply the most ergonomicaly correct, safest, most comfortable system out there. If you like a system that is unrefined and finds you constantly getting puked on and consoling students by telling them to "hang in there you are almost down" Then buy a strong. Not trying to be mean but somebody else hit the nail on the head when they said strong should put more time and effort into their civilian systems. Then again it might be their plan to gradually fade out of the civilian market. It sure looks that way. NOt too mention....misroute the drouge bridle, and you get a horseshoe mal. packer binds the 3 ring and you get a drouge in tow. Basically is more complicated and less error proof to pack.
