  1. So you believe in torture but not execution ... very civilized. She is not advocating whipping or pulling toenails out. She points out that the punishment aspect of prison should include the loss of humanity and personal interaction. If a person commits a savage crime against an innocent person, we cannot kill him nor can we torture him. It seems right however to deny him teh pleasures of interacting with humanity be it via direct interaction or media (written or televised). He should be removed from society in every way possible short of actually killing him. 2. In Speakers Corner? I think you know what my gut response is to animals like this but I have had reservations about DP as of late. Mostly because of the risk of killing a wrongfully convicted person. Anyway, this thread seems to have gone of on a tangent towards DP. My primary reason for wanting to have this guy go to max sesurity is not due to a visceral bloodlust or desire to see vigilante action (not that I feel a thread of compassion towards the guy). I just want him put away for good. His lawyer is playing up a minimal risk to get his guy a cushy incarceration somewhere. In the same way that some lawyers pull the old "my client will face persecution if deported" every time we try to deport a terrorist or major criminal, I do not want to see lawyers getting violent pedophiles put into minimum security or other cushy accomodations because lawyers start playing the "my client will be at risk" card. We have put all kinds of violent sex offenders and child murderers behind bars (clifford olsen, paul bernardo, peter whitmore...etc) and they have gotten by unscathed. 3. The guy is not going to be killed in there. He will simply be in solitary. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  4. Perfectly reasonable. Again the risk this guy apparently faces is ridiculously overplayed. It is being milked so he can go somewhere and be allowed recreation and enjoyment. He does deserve to be cut off from humanity in a cell for the rest of his natural life. 5. I guess it is more an issue of public safety. Does a psych ward really provide the security of a max pen? Secondly is the guy truly insane (completely incapable of telling right from wrong, blackouts, mass delusions....etc) or does he merely have personality disorders that can be dealt with by a prison shrink. I can see hospitalization if the guy is truly at the mental level of a three year old and has no clue. Otherwise he simply has disorders yet is mentally capable of plotting to decieve and offend again. He really belongs behind bars. 6. I agree with you but our society will never accept that in reality. I do feel that this threat is overplayed. Yes these guys are targets but having known a few people who work in the pen system the segregation wing (informants, sex offenders and other undesireables) is reasonably secure. It can happen and from time to time it does happen where a perv/rat gets done but contrary to popular misconception this is the exception not the norm. It seems an acceptable risk. The only downside for this guy is that being in protective custody means no yard time or recreational activities. What his lawyer is really doing is playing up a minor threat so his client can go somewhere low security and be able to enjoy his incarceration. 7. http://www.torontosun.com/News/Canada/2007/12/18/4730158.html Lawyer for serial pedophile and dangerous offender wants his client to be spared prison because he claims he will be mistreated by other cons. I realize that his position on the pecking order will be precariously low but what are the alternatives? He has already shown that he is too dangerous for minimum security. If they really are concerned about this guy then they could put him in segregation. Given what he did repeatedly and once while apparently under supervision/custody it is not fair to citizens to put him anywhere else but max security. This guy is just going to have to take his chances as I see it. He made his own bed. 8. As a civilised society we need to provide them with adequate food, shelter, hygiene and medical care. That is it. We should not have to pay for recreation or reading, nor should we ask gaurds to risk having these animals out of their cells where they could commit violent acts upon other cons or gaurds. Furthermore a murderer has permanently denied someone the opportunity to see his/her loved ones so while we should not brutally murder him in kind, the murderer should lose that right. His suggestion is perfectly reasonable My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  11. Sounds like a real charmer Ok, so you throw that out there but don't tell the story? Details please...this sounds entertaining My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  12. Yeah, it's called "orbit". You know I have never jumped on the "bash the whuffos" bandwagon because I can understand the dumb questions (I was one once), and I even politely accept the "perfectly good airplane" line in good grace. But when someone has not done something themselves, to stand there and argue endlessly with someone who has is beyond me. It has happened numerous times. 13. http://nationalpost.com/opinion/story.html?id=167053 I tend to agree with you. Strangely there are some that aplaud the judges actions as is seen in the link above My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  14. I heard of one case of a small girl on a 300' canopy in AZ that got caught in a thermal and had a 45 minute ride. And if you want to include a high-altitude ejection into a thunderstorm, Google for "The Man Who Rode the Thunder". In the girls case she had an open canopy. I googled the other stroy but it did not give specifics as to the state of his parachute. The guy I was talking to was adamant that skydivers did it all the time because there were "thermals" at altitude and they could stay in the sky indefinitely without oppenning their chutes. It was one of those scenarios where I opted to agree that he was right simply because I was getting a headache explaining reality to the guy. 15. http://www.nationalpost.com/opinion/story.html?id=165017 Apparently wearing a poppy on a public uniform in a courtroom is offensive. While the judge did not order the cop to take it off she did give him a stern talking to in front of the courtroom for wearing it and strongly suggested that he refrains from doing so in the future lest he offend someone. I honestly am not trying to chest thump here but is this not a bit much? The cop was not forcing everyone to wear a poppy. No one was being force fed Remembrance Day. I fail to see why the judge would say this. Am I wrong for being a bit put off by this? (Yes I do realize this was an isolated incedent) My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  16. In one case a guy argued with me indefinitely about how skydivers catch "thermals" and can stay floating (chute not yet open) for indefinite periods of time. Despite his having never jumped he argued with me forever insisting that jumpers do it all the time. 17. Oh, yeah, I felt that way too, being a big guy with karate training...until the night I found myself under attack by a raging lunatic bigger than myself, at the same time I was suffering from heat exhaustion. You'll never understand what it is to need a gun and not have it until it actually happens to you. So true. Been there, done that (or something similar). I believe there are risks to gun ownership but at the end of the day I should be the one to decide if I own one....not the government.
