  1. http://www.nationalpost.com/opinion/story.html?id=175234 In a nutshell, Macleans Magazine printed an article that offended muslims . The Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC) wrote a five page "Letter to the Editor" in response and Macleans did not publish it. Now the CIC is taking Macleans to the Human Rights Commission to demand that they publish it. The author of the article feels that the CIC is going to win. Is that probable? I hope not. Any lawyer types know if they actually can get away with this? Would this not be a large step in the wrong direction My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  2. No, but I do not see why people would be put off by the idea of their taxes ensuring that a child gets to live a full life and contribute back to society rather than die at 8 years old. 3. Do I get to decide how much I would like to give for defence spending? For that matter, why am I being forced to pay taxes so poor kids get government subsidized elementary school? If I wish to give to that I should have a charity to give to. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  4. Blame Canada. Last time this happened (back in the 1800's) we were the culprits. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  5. Well that's a cute way to put it but it ignores the meat of the issue. Nearly everyone, even the rich, dies from lack of services. There's almost always some additional procedure, new trial drug, or intervention that could give someone near death a shot at additional time alive. Some services are too expensive to be worthwhile, and for people to die instead of overconsume is better than the alternative on the whole, because overconsumption by the moribund threatens the living. But if some basic life saving services can be covered that the poor could not afford then why not? When I look at the stupid spending that goes on and all the abusive wasteful social services I really would not mind if my tax dollars helped prevent a minimum wage earner from dying or being unable to work. I have not seen an in depth study on it but surely some of the dollars spent could be re-earned by rehabilitating those on disability. As has been pointed out most countries pick a middle ground between pure capitalism or socialism My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  6. that is such a typical tactic for someone with your obviously far winged extremist politics Damn tree hugging, vegetarian, terrorist loving, gay commie liberal! 8. Pretty much the way I was looking at it Sad but true. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  9. By rationing. So while you do not find it humane to deny based on cost, those governments deny care because they cannot afford it. The quality of Canadian health care is good when you can get it. The quality of US healthcare is great when you can afford it. Hence, wealthier Canadians come to the US for treatment because they cannot get the care in Canada. Ergo, inhumane. Look, I'm no expert but what about some sort of a two tiered system? 10. Executing him in cold blood just for vandalism or theft might be a bit much. I should be allowed to use the gun to detain him and if he runs I should not be obliged to break a sweat chasing him or risk tackling him. I should be allowed to try to shoot for the legs (yeah I know, you don't shoot for legs but if he is unarmed and running away I don't wish to be excessive) My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  11. I am not saying that our system is no good at all. It simply has deteriorated from what it was in the 70's and early 80's. I am all for the idea government health care plans. I am just pointing out to you how you guys could make yours better than the one we have when you implement it. One of the benefits of being the last to jump on the bandwagon is that you get to see the implementation errors of those who did it ahead of you. We have our economic woes here. Inflation, poverty...etc, just like everyone else. I agree that if you guys can support the military you have then you can support health care. Just a thought; it might improve the quality of the debates here if everyone didn't categorize people into one of two camps, those being A: Neo-con, chickenhawk, redneckpublicans and B; Bleeding heart, gay commie liberals. It could be that some people see shades of gray. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  12. Amazing aint it but, but, when I read Richards' posts I don't want to vomit and laugh at the same time ? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  14. Precisely. It has failed up here in Canada primarily because of the implementation in the past 2 decades. In it's original form it did seem to work. Really? It has failed? Then why is it still there and your dollar kicking our asses? I've spoken with many Canadians and thee is no 6 month waiting list, etc. We have had several problems with it. Failure may have been a bit of a strong choice of words. We have mismanaged it and in it's current state it will not be sustainable. A culture of entitlement (canadians seem to feel that they are owed a quality of life for some reason) has caused gratuitous abuse of our health care system. Furthermore, special interest pandering has caused misallocation of funds in our health care towards non-essentials at the expense of some life saving treatments. The wait lists are there. My mother in law had severe pain and required surgury and had to eventually go out of the country for it. I did not have a family doctor and was on a waiting list for a year. Regarding the strong dollar, remember that Canada is a heavily commodity export based economy with the bulk of our exports going to the US. A strong dollar hurts that. Also the bulk of our tourism is Americans, so again the strong dollar may not be good. There are arguments both ways for that. 15. I didn't say he wanted him out of the lock-up. I said he was trying to put him in a lower security or a mental hospital. I am not suggesting that he should be put in general population. I am saying he should be in max security but in segregation. I am confused about your point here. First you say that segregation is not safe and then you go on to say max security is required. I am not trying to be difficult but I am not sure where you stand. My understanding is that segregation is much more secure than most people beleive. It is not pleasant, and it is bleak but they are safe. Clifford olson, paul bernardo, peter whitmore and their kind have done just fine in there. Are you refering to me with the "bloodthirsty" remark? Obviously you have not been reading my posts on this thread. I have been suggesting that they provide him with protection all along. My argument for putting him in maximum was based on public safety, not bloodlust. It should have been quite evident in my posts. I am not sure where you are seeing bloodthirsty in my posts on this thread. I have certainly not suggested anything as remotely extreme or ridiculous as the words you are trying to put in my mouth. Again, if you have actually been reading my posts, I have agreed with everything she has said. 16. It's really not that simple. I worked in a correctional facility for several years and it is a much more complex environment that many might expect. Given your experience I'll have to trust your judgement on that. 17. The safety and security of the staff at the institution. Desperate men will do desperate things. I don't imagine you need to rehabilitate them for that purpose. In solitary they will not be in a position to do harm. The gaurds can impress upon them that since they will be there for the rest of thier lives it would be in thier best interest not to act out. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  18. Rehabilitate someone who is never getting out? For what purpose? My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
  19. In a case like that would the father really be put away for life? I doubt it but this is your area. I am referring to brutal thugs who have committed hideous crimes against innocent people. But, the point is taken that you would be penalizing the son of the murderer. So in the interest of the kid, a brutal murderer could see his family from time to time but that would be it. In between visits he still should be in complete isolation. My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.

  22. As a civilised society we need to provide them with adequate food, shelter, hygiene and medical care. That is it. We should not have to pay for recreation or reading, nor should we ask gaurds to risk having these animals out of their cells where they could commit violent acts upon other cons or gaurds. Furthermore a murderer has permanently denied someone the opportunity to see his/her loved ones so while we should not brutally murder him in kind, the murderer should lose that right. His suggestion is perfectly reasonable If weact as inhumanely as the so-called garbage that are incarcerated, then we are that person. That doesn't mean HBO and ESPN, it means simple things like books, basic recreation, etc. Inhumane? We would be subjecting him to cruel and unusual....boredom? 23. I think they need to go after the coaches more. I highly doubt that time and time again, athletes choose this route behind the backs of their blissfully ignorant and innocent coaches. There have been reports in the past of coaches even pushing it on the athletes. If the people in charge started geting nailed too then it might have an effect on the problem My biggest handicap is that sometimes the hole in the front of my head operates a tad bit faster than the grey matter contained within.
