Do I need a B-License to get a C-License?
panzwami replied to SullyFlyer's topic in Safety and Training
Yeah, I don't think you actually have to have a B-License in hand to get a C, but you do have to meet all the requirements for B to get C. That means you will have to take both tests. Matt ----- -
ripped it off - I think it's pretty obvious from where. It's from the one where Homer joins Lollapalooza. He's on stage talking to Billy Corgan. Conversation goes something like this: Billy: "Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins." Homer: "Homer Simpson, smiling politely." Matt -----

what to expect at a coach's rating course
panzwami replied to panzwami's topic in Safety and Training
I'm taking a coach course soon, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some idea of what to expect, especially on the air skills portion of the course. Is there anything that can be done to prepare for the course? Obviously I'll be reading the SIMs and IRMs, but is there anything else that I should be doing? Thanks for the advice. Matt ----- -
does your partner go to Georgia Tech? The article mentions that one of the guys on the 1st place team goes there. That's why I'm confused. Matt -----

are you looking for help on this, or do you just want someone just to tell you the answer? Matt -----

Rig ??? Should I buy new or used?
panzwami replied to jumpinfarmer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In this situation, I think it definitely makes more sense to buy used. Chances are you will be changing canopies at least once as you come off of student status and start to to gain experience. You'll want a harness/container that fits well, but that you can use with several different size canopies. I don't think you plan on staying on those student mains forever, but you don't really want to buy a brand new canopy for your current experience level, only to get rid of it in 50 jumps when you decide it's too big. Used gear is usually the best way to go for your first set. Learn what you like and don't like so you can make a much more educated decision down the road when you want to buy new. Hope this helps. does anyone know how freefly turned out at collegiates this year? I just read the collegiates article in Parachutist, and now I'm confused... Matt -----

IIRC, the pilots were doing some really tricky low-speed, low-level, high-AOA stuff when they had an engine failure. It basically nosed straight toward the ground, and the pilots only had a couple seconds and a few hundred feet to jettison the airplane. The video clip is pretty popular. I've seen it a few times floating around the internet. Matt -----

Gotta love the French. Saddam is killing thousands of his own people, and instead of trying to do anything about it, they're busy making deals for oil. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/WNT/Investigation/saddam_oil_vouchers_040129-1.html Time for some "freedom" fries... Matt -----

I think BMW's have governors that limit them to around 155 or 160mph. It won't go any faster, although I think there is power to spare. Matt -----

I heard a great suggestion one time on how to deal with misbehaving children. They were talking about it on a radio show and some woman called in and said that when her son threw a tantrum in public, she videotaped the whole thing and showed the tape to his friends when they came over to play. Supposedly it only took a couple times before the kid learned. I don't have any kids so I can't really speak from experience, but I thought that was a great idea. Matt -----

Fear and flying with skydivers questions please.

My girl is 6ft, 125lbs?? That's gotta be, like, worse than Calista Flockhart skinny. Or did I read something wrong? Matt ----- -
Hey, nice pictures. My sister is stationed on an icebreaker in the Antarctic right now, breaking ice. I've seen a bunch of great pictures from down there, although most of them tend to feature ice and penguins. Coasties kick ass. Matt -----

Can I saw how happy I was when the clapping grew ten fold a couple seconds later when he said "...but the threat of terrorism will never expire?" yeah, I thought this was a great little piece of speechwriting. Start off by saying the Patriot Act will expire, and wait for all the Dems to start clapping. But then come back and point out that terrorism never expires, and make them all look like asshats. 1998 Honda Prelude Type SH. Got it with just a touch over 27k miles. Loved that car. Did many more crazy/stupid things with it than I probably should have. Matt -----

Although, the point about the acceleration stress is correct. Even if you could jump up fast enough to counter a freefalling elevator, the stress of such a massive acceleration over such a short period of time would definitely hurt a bit. Matt -----
-
Actually, this would work, if you could jump in a direction opposite to the elevator's direction of travel (meaning in this case you would jump straight up), at a rate exactly equal to that at which the elevator is falling. For example, if the elevator is falling at 10 mph, and you jump straight up at 10 mph, for a short amount of time you will remain essentially stationary in space (the two vectors would momentarily cancel each other), until gravity accelerates you back down with the elevator (or you slam into the ceiling of the falling car). If you could time this jump at the exact instant the car gets to ground level, your impact would be minimal. The reason the "jump up right before the elevator hits the ground" theory isn't really feasible, is simply because if the elevator is freefalling toward the ground, there is no way you will be able to jump with enough vertical speed to counteract your fall. Thus.....splat. Matt -----

nope, there's not. You're right, he never said the track was 90 miles long, but no matter what the length, it has to be *something.* It could be 1 mile or 1000 miles, but the math is the same. The key point here is the fact that he was going below his average speed for all of his time. He needed to complete the race in 8 hours, but drove below the average for all 8 hours. If at any point before 8 hours were up he were to fix his car, it would still technically be possible for him to achieve his desired average. Consider: Same race, 16 laps, 90-mile-long track. He wants to average 180mph, meaning he will have to complete the race (16 laps * 90 miles per lap = 1440 total miles) in eight hours (1440 miles / 180 mph = 8 hours). Say he drives 90mph for the first *seven* laps. He will then have completed 630 total miles (90-mile-track * 7 laps = 630 miles) in 7 hours. He wants to go 1440 miles in 8 hours, and he has already done 630 miles in 7 hours. SO.....he has one hour remaining, and 810 miles left to drive. He would have to drive 810mph for the last hour to make his goal (forget that a car can't do 810mph, this is just the math part of it). So, if he were to fix his car at any time before he used up his alloted amount of time, he would still technically be able to speed up and make his goal. The longer he drives below the average desired speed, the faster he will have to drive to make up the difference. As time T approaches 8 hours (meaning the amount of time he has left gets smaller and smaller), his required speed will get higher and higher, continuing to infinity. Matt -----
