  1. i was reading an article in discover the other day and it said that people will take any new drug therepy and never even think about where it came from, grown on yeast, bacteria ar anything else, but they balk at eating genetically engineered food. wait, i guess this doesn't exactly fit here, sorry. just a thought. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  2. ben franklin said something to the effect that anyone willing to give up freedom for security deserves neither freedom nor secrity. he was a man wiser than a lot that i know today, imagine if we had that caliber of men leading the us today. of course, they were all rebels, and many of them would be laughed at today. we need more people with their spirit around today, willing to sacrifice anything for ideals. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  3. that's another thing i like about this country. i don't have to agree with anyone else, and i don't have to like what you're saying, but i will fight to the death to defend your right to say it. well, they would have to pull some strings and get me back in. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  4. sounds like a brandishing charge to me, but i'm not a lawyer. this is crazy, it could have turned out so much worse. say someone steals it and shoots some people. i can see the seriousness in the thing, but ..... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  5. i have often said that i disagree with the reasons we went to war with iraq. i still do. that being said, i love that website. i don't have to agree with the war, but i support all of our troops there, and until i got out in oct, would have went anywhere i was told and done my job proudly. even though i am not in the military, i am still a soldier after all. i still have a few friends there, and some who have just returned. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  6. there was a cool pic of a russian reserve in the classified section. it was red and looked a little different but it was cool. i would love to jump one, it looks like fun. but then i thought an sf-10a was a lot of fun, a round that i could stand up in 12 knot winds. it steered almost as good as a square. if i could get a hold of one of those, i would replace my 24' round national. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes

  8. do you mind if i pass it along to a few of my buddies that are in the special forces? there are a few former marines that would love it. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  9. man, i find myself not being able to bring up a good counter point, in other words, i'm speechless. me too, for the same reasons. great article, i gotta check out the website. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  10. man, it didn't take long to figure me out....but not really. i have very strong opinions on some things, and i don't change my convictions. i don't think it would hurt anything giving some people a break. sometimes i have been known to debate, though..... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  11. i just have one more thing to say about this: if you are making less than everyone else in the office and it's your business, you need to find a new calling my friend, cuz you ain't doing something right. of course you don't want the minimum wage to go up. you believe all the hype, just like everyone else does. it don't have hardly any effect at all on the economy, check the past records, people, it never has, nor ever will cause anything to happen to the economy. that happens all by itself. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  12. i'm not saying he doesn't deserve what he worked for, all i'm saying is if you have enough money for all that, you can afford to spread the wealth. i remember when we got done building a house quickly, the boss would get a bonus. one of our bosses gave everyone of us on the crew a percentage. one guy didn't give us a thing, one guy took us all out to dinner whenever we got done. i will split the bonus among my workers. it keeps them happy, doesn't hurt me because it was "extra" money to start with, and is the right thing to do. as for the guys who didn't share the wealth with us, it is ok. we weren't working on commission anyway. i take care of my workers, and they in turn, do a good job for me. i'm not afraid to share a little bit. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  13. its not called price fixing, its called collective bargaining. the way it works is the union guy puts an offer out, and the company guy accepts or rejects it. then they haggle around until they agree on the new contract. in nc, my local actually took a $.15 loss this time. the thing that really hurts is when they do jobs at 80-90% of scale. scale in wv is $25.30, most jobs are at 90% - $22.77. they do this to allow newer and smaller companies to be competitive with the big guys. on a job i did once, i got $5k in 2 weeks, was i worth it? it was 7 12's that's 168 hours in 2 weeks. i think so. of course, that doesnt take into account the 4 months i was laid off after that, so it all evens out. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  14. operate at a loss....that's laughable. if you increase 1 wage $2 an hour, that's a little over $4000 a year. with the extra taxes, it's a little over $6000. if you can't increase your prices and decrease your expenses enough to cover that, it sounds like someone is overpaid. please don't take this as a personal attack, it was not intended to be. i'm merely pointing out the fact that greed is the thing that rules the marketplace. i only bring in around $30k a year, and i'm doing well. i realize that some people have more expensive tastes, but c'mon, is anyone really worth 30+million a year? in response to a later post, yes, unions can be an answer. when used correctly, and in most situations. i don't claim to have all the answers, or even most of them, but i know that we need to do something about the state of affairs in the community. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  15. i work in the construction industry. i pay employees what they are worth to me. if i have 2 guys working for me, 1 sits around, the other busts his hump, the guy who sits around goes home at the end of the day with a paycheck and no job. if i hire a new guy that knows more and is a better worker, he gets more money. and my payscale starts a good bit higher than min wage. when i sign my union contract, it will be almost 5x the min wage. then my prices go up, so do my bids. if i don't get a job because of it, i will move on to the next one and get it. not only am i the company owner, but a paid employee. it's a really neat system, i would recommend that everyone would vote to unionize, that solves the min wage issue. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  16. i went through sl training in 98. jump # 4, no shit there i was, still ahd my prcp handle in hand, suspension lines from my toes to my wrists, cigarette roll overhead, thinking this is it. in the amount of time it took to look at my altimeter, the lines came away from it, canopy caught some air and inflated at about 1000'. when i got on the ground, i was all proud i had a good emergency recovery. when the instructor got down, he ran over to me and told me that i'd scared the shit outta him. i told him that he shoulda been where i was. we had a smoke to calm our nerves, and went up again. i had to so that i didn't have to dwell on it til the next w/e and maybe never jump again. as far as the topic of the post, i have excellent canopy control, hit the peas about three times in my last 15 jumps, and only one time with a square have i not stood up(went to one knee on the mal i talked about). i can spot so-so(been three years since i was in the air in a cessna). i jumped at a very small dz, and learned how to pack over beer after jumping all day(we always unpacked them at the end of the night). i was packing my own canopy after jump #12, talk about fun(the rigger was always watching over my shoulder). just my $.02 _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  17. i make $21 an hour in wv. i also own a small business, and the minimum i will pay to a good worker is $8. i knew that this forum would not be a good place to post this, obviously there are no minimum wage earners here, and it also seems that noone cares about the poor people in this country. and as for the cost of living skyrocketing, puh-lease!!! that's a buzz-line that's used when you're afraid to face reality. and if we would stop using outside resources instead of foreign made manufacturing and material, we could do this. wal-mart would not have as big a profit margin, but more people would have more money to spend there. if the ceo's of big companies would make a little less than $30+millilion a year, do the math. as for the small business owners hurting, if you need to raise your prices a little to make up for the cut into your profits, we can absorb this. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  18. i prefer 9mm copper clad rounds, or buckshot. if an intruder is in your house, you don't want a bullet going through the wall and hitting your wife and child. .40 cal is nice, meets these requirements, as do .38, .41, and in some cases even .45. any of the magnum loads are out. hydra shok is a good round for taking someone down, and there was a round called talon or something which worked off of the same principle, but i haven't seen those in a while. the pump shotgun is your best home defense gun, a lot of times the sound of the action being worked will make an intruder piss his pants. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  19. so much for the republicans being your friends. it is sickening that congress can vote themselves a wage increase every year, and that any common person who has a minimum wage job can't even hope to support his family without working two or three jobs or living on welfare. i can't believe that one of the reasons they used to defeat it was that it would cut into the companies profit margins and force a lot of people out of business(seen on an interview on cnn last night). i have never been a democrat, and always found it hard to agree with them(i'm independant), but i will never vote republican again. don't blame me, i voted for kerry. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  20. i didn't like some of his choices, however this was very cool, it shows a human side, and simple respect. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  21. wow. i read th whole thing, and don't know what to say. i don't know about situational ethics. to me, it's more black and white. i have been in combat twice, but have never had any hard choices. in a tank in desert storm, it was pretty clear we were hitting tanks, that was still pretty bad, though. for every fireworks show i saw, that meant four poor sob's didn't get to kiss their wives again, or their kids. and for what? pardon me for saying this, but: oil. we need to free ourselves from this anchor and then examine ourselves. just my opinion. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  22. man, i heard that in september they didn't vote the brady bill into an extension or something and that you could get the begger mags now. i haven't done any shopping to get some yet, so i don't know if it's true. i had three left pre-ban. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  23. that is the point i've been trying to make. change the industry standard. once you're the first to start doing this, you can make a shit-pot of money, or if you're not into that, you can donate your excess or invest in better products. the only thing you need are a couple of big backers, or more small ones. the only thing you need to make dc safe is a negative ground, just like in a house circuit. the thing that makes new wiring safe is the fact that the circuit is connected to a common ground. also, if all plugs stayed the same type, with a different prong, you could have a small step-down transformer at each outlet, from 12v to 3v. that covers most things. and you could have built in battery chargers integrated into the home, virtually eliminating the need for disposable batteries in as few as 25 years. i have a lot of really good(in my opinion) ideas of how to solve an energy crisis for all of us, but they're just ideas. someone has to do something about this situation(the topic of the thread). again, this is just my opinion. and bill, i applaud anyone who actually puts some effort into solving the problem. good job. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  24. i don't own a house. it will be when i build it. may cost a little more, but it's worth it. as far as not being commercially viable, if it takes twice as many to make the same power and costs a quarter of the price, that's a good deal. but, as i said, i'm only in the research stage. you would obviously have better info than me. and as for 120v ac being easier, the only reason it would be any easier is that everything is in place for 120v ac. dc is easier, not to mention a lot safer in the smaller voltages i am talking about. if you disagree with that, stick your finger in an outlet, then grab your car battery. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  25. i do have some links for hemp production, http://mojo.calyx.net/~olsen/HEMP/IHA/iha01105.html http://www.hemptraders.com/index.shtml http://www.nutiva.com/hempinfo/hemp_101.php http://www.uky.edu/Ag/AgEcon/pubs/res_other/hemp97.pdf i was considering farming hemp. i live in wv, and in 2000, it was legalized here, but due to the ignorant feds, there has been no progress towards the end goal. in other words, it's legal, but you can't do it because it needs to be regulated. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
