  1. what did the apollo program really contribute to the people, besides pride in finally beating the russians in something. after all, that was the only thing we came in first in since the space race started. it took us almost 20 years after them to put a woman in space, for example. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes

  3. MY god is the one true god and all others are false. and ya know what's funny? i'm not telling any of you who she is! but don't worry, you're not gonna burn in hell. it ain't like that. according to my god, hell is pretty nice weather wise. the worst part is all the things that are missing, nice rigs but no planes, tropical weather but no ac, lots of beer that won't get ya drunk, etc.... it is people who think like you that are the best argument in favor of the 2d ammendment. not so much as keeping religion out of our lives like some people claim, but not making any laws favoring any one religion over another. the only thing that you have which ties your beliefs to reality is your faith. and yes, all the other people who believe like you really can be wrong and have been proven wrong many times in the past 2k years. i am not trying to offend you, merely making a point. if i did, i apologize, i realize some people get offended easily over religious discussions. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  4. it was a rather eloquent way to phrase the idea. i have been thinking a lot recently about string theory and quantum physics. i mean really in my spare time, sitting around wondering. i had a really good debate with a jehovah's witness who came to the door just as i finished getting a buzz, we talked for 45 minutes, and given another 2 hours, i would have convinced her......it was enlightening for me, but if i'm wrong, oh well. religion serves as a wonderful guide to people who need it, my rules make me respect the planet and all other people, so it fits in. if you ever need an example of the need for seperation of the church and state, watch that history channel show on the inquisition. but that's an extreme example, not the norm. in the big picture, what really matters is the indvidual's commitment to his beliefs. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  5. i think he's captured the whole situation accurately with the satement above. everyone has to remember this when criticizing the military for all the scandals going on. i was there in desert storm, and again in enduring freedom(afghanistan). when you realize that youths are notorious for making bad decisions and getting into trouble because of a lack of experience, it should come as no surprise that when you give them guns and try to kill them on a daily basis, things get slightly more serious. while never having seen the show, i do know that some people in my unit in afg. had alcohol and there were instances of 'fraternization'. when i was in iraq years ago, there were numerous incidences of people smuggling drugs and alcohol over from germany inside vehicles. i even got an aks out of iraq by wrapping it up and placing it under the engine of my tank when it got pulled. unfortunately, i was out of the military befor i was able to retreive it (they just don't pull pack because you forgot something). i also know of a stupid individual who mailed an ak-47 home and got caught when he bragged about it (it actually got there and they confiscated it). the point i'm making is, people make mistakes, but for the most part, they're doing a good job over there. as for hollywood's portrayal of this war, if you need comparisons, watch any war movie. they don't make many accuate ones. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  6. my thinking would be that if you were on a jump with a videographer, then you are granting permission to be videoed(sp?), unless you asked not to be shot. if you were at bridge day, you should expect to be shot by someone, there are too many cameras there. if you were on a base jump somewhere and had someone tape you, you would both own the video. if someone you didn't know was taping you, it belongs to them. they have the right to tape something they are witnessing, i.e. taping a car chase, or a plane crash, etc. basically, this is just an opinion, i guess real tv would know the law better.... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  7. i was wondering if anyone has done any smoke stacks at powerplants? i have dreamed of jumping off one since i was little, and was wondering if anyone else had done them. i'm not a base jumper, still a student skydiver. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  8. i read in time and somewhere else about the whole thing a while back. i used to be in an sf unit. i know what these guys were prepared for and i know what would have happened if they had met resistance. my unit went to afghanistan in 02 and while i wasn't on a team, i basically ran the show in admin in the fob. as someone else said, i respect her also for not exagerating. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  9. why, ya looking for a girlfriend? sorry, just had to say it. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  10. the dz i jump at is tristate at chesapeake oh. it's right across the river from huntington and that is an hour drive from charleston. of course, that makes it about 2.5 - 3 hrs from the bridge, but huntington is a college town if you're planning to stay for any extra time, it's kinda laid back with lots of bars. if ya decide that ya wanna go check it out, send me a pm and i'll jump with ya. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  11. i must have missed this post. can you give me a link? i'd like to know the reasoning behind the decision. nevermind, i just looked it up and i'd already read it before. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  12. that's not completely right either. i'll give an example: i applied for a union job that involved our participating in a half hour safety review by osha. it had a graph that showed that since osha's inception in the 60's, construction deaths decreased steadily. cool, osha works, right? not so fast.....after that, a some other guy came in and gave his part, the graph had been extended to the late 1800's and the deaths were a lot higher, but had been steadily decreasing for almost 100 years without osha. i learned how to do some crazy things with statistics in h.s. i also used to know how to quantify a place where 4+4=9. i forgot that though. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  13. read my post again. i stayed vague with the statements bout small mindedness and the rest in order not to personally insult you by saying "you are small minded", etc. i don't expect anyone to agree with me, i have a lot of radical ideas. i also have morals and one of them says i should treat all people equally until they have done something to lose my respect....from the bum on the street to the potus....period. i'm not perfect, but i am trying to make up for a shit pot of bad karma from earlier in life. i just don't like our freedoms being eroded and everyone saying it's all right, it's cool....it's NOT. sorry about the thread hijack..... _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  14. thanx for all of the info on this, especially the link to the other forum. i tried several different searches on this and came up with nothing relative. i must have quit too soon. i think i'll pass this one. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  15. had you read the whole post, you could use the scant info i have provided and check it to see that it's only been legal fo 30 years. before that, your right to privacy was defended in the courts. our freedoms are being taken away from us little by little, and anyone who complains is either a terrorist, a drug abuser, or a liberal. i don't want to be labelled(sp) as either. the only time people such as yourselves will notice this trend is when it affects you. by that time it will be way too late to fix it. i wouldn't care too much as i've only got 30-45 years left tops, but i have children and would like them to be as free as i was when i got out of school. fat chance. like my buddie benji wrote "people who are willing to give up freedom for security deserve neither", slightly paraphrased. small minded people make me sick, and judgemental people are definately small minded. also, if you're going to fire, or not hire, people for breaking laws, then at least do it uniformly. if sodomy is illegal in your state, then it should preclude homosexuals from being hired. if it doesn't, that says something about you principles(or lack thereof). meaning you can't pick and choose what laws you are willing to ignore. that makes one a hypocrite. and no, this is not a personal attack, just an opinion. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  16. i searched the threads and i can't find anything relative to a pisa swift 5cell reserve. i'm trying to figure out if it's been tso'd for use in the us. i'm not sure where to look for info, any help is appreciated. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  17. i would love to have seen it....cool. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  18. this is the attitude that is wrong with the problem today. it is not the right of the employer to test for drugs for employment, i believe that until the 80's it was unconstitutional and then the whole drug war started. i would never submit to a drug test for anyone again, except employment, and i pass every one and get high whenever i want to after work. i would not get high before jumping any quicker than 99.9% of skydivers wouldn't drink a beer and jump. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  19. repeat after me and as you say them, touch them. balls of the feet....calf....thigh......buttock......pull-up muscle..... i had a blackhat tie my boots together on the wire and they dropped me for an hour and a half off the slt at benning. i was bleeding from my ears, eyes, nose, lips, chin and neck. but i will never forget how to plf, ever. i have stood up 42 out of 43 student jumps (the other one went down to a knee on a downwind landing i was practicing), and stood up an mc1 and an sf-10 a couple of times. but if i ever need to do a plf for real, i can without thinking. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  20. the thing that everyone here totally missed on this, (and i'm not surprised) is financially. it cost over $7 million to give berets to everyone. and it took over 3 years to do it. most of the berets worn by our soldiers (or first issued to them) came from china. they couldn't produce enough of them here in the states. i was in when the transition ocurred, (although we wore maroon and green ones) and all the people i talked to about it didn't want to wear them. they liked the pc better (as do i). they are not very useful, too hot in the summer, can't keep the sun out of your eyes, lose shape when wet, need shaved, etc. when i got my maroon beret, though, it was a very proud day indeed. had i earned a green one before leaving, it would have been 10x the amount of pride. about medals, they are based on rank. i know too many people who got bronze stars because they were an e7 or higher, some without ever leaving the fob (which was in uzbekistan for ops in afghanistan). there are letter from marines in ww2 that complain about the same thing. i was an e6 when i got out and had 14 ribbons (medals) not counting oak leaf clusters for 2d and 3d awards. does this make me special? i think not, just means that someone thought i did a good job. of course some of them were just because i went to war (6 total for 2 tours). when you're in a unit like my former one (sf), you'll see the true meaning of "quiet professionals". they are all heroes, and they'll never talk about it. first off, most of it's classified, second of all, they don't like to brag. the stories they can tell are usually hilarious, though. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  21. nobody should change their charter. they need to stick by their rules. this should not an issue here. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  22. www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_reply_write;parent_post_id=1644948 just checking to see if i can make a clicky. i give up. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  23. i recently had a similar experience with a possum. i lost the lid to one of my trashcans and as i was walking to the truck one day, i heard a noise inside of it. i looked inside, and saw a bag of trash move. i picked it up, and a possum was underneath and started hissing at me. i dropped the bag, ran into the house and grabbed my 9mm. when i got back out, i removed the trashbag and shot it once, right in the chest. best part about it was not having to touch the damn thing, it was already in the trashcan. killed it instantly, though. don't get me wrong, i don't hate animals. i actually saved 9 baby racoons from a building we were remodelling a couple of weeks ago. i just hate animals stringing trash all over the yard. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  24. what are ya looking for? i recently bought a used rig and would consider selling it if ya are in the market for something like it, however a lot of people don't like round reserves. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
  25. new rules are silly. making a rule that would be better would be something like "no turns of more than 90 degrees shall be made at an altitude of less than 200 feet". from what i read on fatalities historically, they have stayed consistently around 30-35 and have shifted to a majority of turning accidents. when i bought a rig i couldn't jump on student status, i went on a powered parachute ride over my house at about 5000 ft and hopped off. the pilot had agreed to drop me off after asking me a few questions and insisting that he had the call on whether the dz i'd chosen was suitable. i didn't have an altimeter, i counted to 5 and pulled. rules are a necessary evil we put up with, but to add more is assanine. ask any base jumpers about them. _________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes
