  1. Thanks, that gives me a good idea. I should be able to fet acceptable performance out of the camera for student videos and that will let me get a digital camera that I can play with and learn on. Now if the weather will just warm up so that I can start making some money to buy one.
  2. Erase - record to it with no input or you can record black with the lens cap on. You can erase them with a very poerfull magnet but I have not tried this method.
  3. I am just thinking about tandem videos. I normally take 24 pictures in free fall. Coming out the door I snap a few. Maybe one or two as I approach the tandem to get the ground below or a close up of the drogue. Then most of them as I park in front of them. I like to save a few for opening. Two things I worry about. I don't want to get less than the total number I already have ( reason for the original question ) and I don't want to miss that perfect shot because the camera is still writing to disk.
  4. There are more things to consider than just getting a rig to fit you. There is the size of the door and the fact that you will likely be falling at more than 140 mph just to name a couple. I have learned a lot from putting Aubrey and Chad through their courses. I would never want to take someone that size on their first few skydives with a door smaller than an Otter's door. You are big, the rig is big and the instructors that go with you would have a much better chance if they were at least fairly big. I would recommend finding someone with experience jumping with guys your size.
  5. Has anyone used this lense? On a 10D or 300D it would be ~27mm. B&H lists it for $399 or $369 after rebate. i read some reviess that spoke well of it. Canon or Sigma do not offer a lense in this size.
  6. Does anyone have a feel for how many pictures it would take on single shot mode during a normal freefall? In other words, If you put it on single shot and snapped off pics as fast as you could, how many would you get before break off.
  7. They even used that video where the guy misses the course on their web site. I can't believe that they could not find someone that could at least hit the course with it. It sounds like a decent idea but there are so many ideas that seem great but don't pan out.
  8. Just make sure that you are working with your local instructors. They are the ones that know the most about your flying skills. The wingloasing that you are at is not so off that I would fault you as long as your local instructors are in agreement. There are cases that I see on here that are much more extreme than yours. That being said know that any canopy can hurt or kill and you are taking an added risk no matter how well you are flying the canopy. This is one area that gets me. Can anyone say that they have mastered a canopy before they downsized. It is ridiculous. You could spend your entire life on one canopy and not master it. If we want young jumpers to listen to us we can not b.s. them. They will realize it and tune us out.
  9. If you are good enough to do paid tandem videos you will be good enough to know where your video camera is pointed. You just need to train yourself to be able to look in the direction you want to shoot and not move your eyes without moving your head (exceptions like glancing at your altimeter without moving your head from the video). You can use the dot on your goggles trick to help train yourself but in the end it is easy to aim without a sight. If you are trying to perfectly frame a big way it might be a different situation but your dot aimer isn't going to cut it there anyway.
  10. Try going to www.dpreview They have a review of most of the common compact flash cards.
  11. A friend of mine was telling me a story about Mike Mullins putting out a load of hop and pops because the cieling was low. He said as they were walking to the plane Mike looked at the jumpers and called "2 minutes".
  12. It isn't any cheaper at buydig. I have not seen it any cheaper at any site I would consider buying from. I know a guy from South Africa that got online and bought $8000 worth of camera gear. I am helping him file a complaint with the BBB because it has been about 8 months with no equipment or refund. If you use any of the price engines make sure that you only buy from the sellers that have received a lot of good reviews. Just a hand full could be the company making false replies.
  13. Hold it in your hand like it is a dart. Aim towards the closest trash can. Shoot for the center. Why do you want to use a ring sight and what are you shooting?
  14. My first canopy was a sabre loaded at ~1.35. I got it at 23 jumps. I don't say this to say that it is acceptable just that is is more common than you think. To blow up and get mad is not the answer. We need to educate young jumpers before they purchase gear.
  15. Most of the places have the same price for the 300d right now as they can barely keep them in stock. If it is much lower than $899 it is probally a scam. I would recommend buying from www.bhphoto.com as they have no hassles and usually have it in stock.
  16. One situation that I am not sure abut is when you have a main that is in some way entangled with a camera helmet. Without an RSL or skyhook you can cut away and if there is an entanglement with the helmet you can get rid of the helmet and them pull the reserve.
  17. I am assuming you are referring to mini- DV tapes. I run a video concession and we fill up the tapes once and then store them for a period just in case there is a reason to go back and get the footage. After that I completely erase the tape and reuse it. Erasing the tape is important or sometimes they will bleed through the old material.
  18. I have always made my thumb switches myself and others from parts I buy at radio shack. I would recommend putting a plug into the system so that you can get rid of your helmet and not have it still attached by the cable.
  19. I would like to go to a freefly training camp in the time period of May 6 to May 20 in Orlando. I would prefer a weekday camp as I am a full time skydiver and the bulk of my work is on the weekends. Anyone know of a good camp during this time period?
  20. If it was good system (not this samsung but the JVC idea) I think it would sell well but I doubt you would ever see a remote shutter release as this is not a feature that the casual buyer is looking for.
  21. Ok lost in the aerodynamics lesson is the original point. There are times that jump run is not best into the wind. We have an 6500 foot long runway and the airport goes much farther in each direction. The airport is not nearly as wide. There are a lot of swamps around us. We almost always run jump run north of south (direction of the runway) and off set it in the direction the wind is coming out of. This way worst case scenario, everyone can at least land of the airport.
  22. JVC has had cameras that would record to the memory card at the same time they are shooting video for a long time. It might be interesting if someone would put out a camera like this that had high quality still capabilities and a remote shutter release. William
  23. What is different in what you are describing and a carving swoop?
