  1. Yes, the industry is cyclical and has always been so. But this time the bust was spectacular. That's because the boom was even more so. The cure for low oil prices is low oil prices. The price will rebound. Expensive high tech methods of extraction will remain available if needed. The amount of recoverable reserves is now much higher than it was, but it's also very difficult to calculate. Even the experts say they can't tell. I recently bought oil stocks. I intend to hold them long term and I expect that they will pay good dividends. I like to buy things that are on sale. I bought BP after their disaster when everyone else was selling. I bought XOM this year because it's a quality company and it will ride out the storm safely. This story somewhat sums up what is going to happen medium term http://www.crudeoiljobs.com/heres-oil-bust-will-turn-massive-oil-boom/ The coal industry is not going to go totally away. But it's time has come and gone. The newer gas extraction methods will give us enough supply till we reach the era of mostly renewable for electricity supply. It is the responsibility of society through government to steer policy. The free market is a wonderful system for generating wealth and income. We all benefit from it's efficiency. But generating wealth is not the only goal of public policy. We have many rules to constrain and guide markets of all sorts. We need to move toward renewable energy for many reasons, but the biggest one is climate change. The energy companies have a responsibility of care to their shareholders to make a profit. They have no responsibility at all for our future. We would be stupid to leave it up to them. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  2. Well, that's fine then. But it's really just a platitude. It is merely vague criticism and no substance. Which is fine for a forum like this. There are no rules. But I find that when I do engage you, and others as well on an issue, it quickly spins out of control and into unrelated side issues. Like an out of the blue vague concern about hungry children, and overpaid executives. The topic in this thread is how we will source our energy in the future. You want to keep burning fossil fuels in larger and larger amounts as long as possible. I think that would be an error, and possibly a recipe for disaster. Tax breaks for Tesla and ADM are a red herring. As are tax breaks for Exxon and no bid contracts for Kellogg Brown Root and Halliburton. And favorable leases on federal land for resource extraction. 3. I'm not sure. But I'd be very surprised if the gas distribution system in cities was not given some level of support. When it was installed. You are probably talking about electricity generation though. The government has intervened there mostly by requiring less pollution from power plants. Gas has a huge advantage there. Just exactly which aspect of current energy policy do you object to? You seem to have a blanket feeling of opposition to any regulation at all. And it's very hard to discuss these issues in blanket terms. It always gets off into the weeds. So if you want a real debate, how about one small issue at a time? 4. Do you want to convince her it's not a death wish, or that you are unlikely to be hurt? The first is easy, because it is true. Skydivers do not deliberately court death, and the chances you will be killed are fairly low. On the other hand, the chances of any active jumper being hurt at some time in their jumping career are very high. So it's wrong to tell her, or for you to tell yourself otherwise. You and her need to come to terms with that set of facts. Like all of us have already. Skydiving is a very unforgiving but very rewarding sport. The problem is that all the rewards go to you, and only risk goes to her. Not to even begin to mention the time commitment that jumping takes. Personally, I would find a way to let her know it's not negotiable. But that doesn't mean I think that is the right answer for you. 5. Our energy supply system is a very large ship to turn around. Many utilities are still publicly owned. It's a massive endeavor, it needs a massive organization. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  6. In this day and age high tech always begins with government funding. Think Apollo, nuclear energy, the internet, biotech and genetics. The iphone would not exist without ARPANET. Sport skydiving would not exist without the military. Yup, government is a definite part of the puzzle. How much gas would the USA be burning without the Interstate system? In the old days kings were the patrons of science. Now it's the people through their government. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  7. That will only be true if we get to work on it. You are calling for us to settle for being content with what we have for the next several generations. I will grant you that windmills are a technology from the 6th century. But coal predates recorded history. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  8. I think we are pretty happy. Every time I fill up the tank lately I know I am. But the future counts too. If we don't begin to develop alternate clean power now it won't be there when we need it. Generations to come? Your lack of foresight and unwillingness to improve the situation would leave those future generations struggling. Long after you are gone. "Wet dream?" When you talk like that, I have to start counting you as a "deadender". Why do you need to be insulting like that? My guess is that you are frustrated because your position and arguments are so weak. 9. I understand the blunt truth of exactly what abortion is and how it happens, along with ways to avoid it. YOU refuse to recognize the blunt truth that you or society in general have no right to deny any woman the option of an abortion. You use the false assumption that a zygote, or an embryo, is a person to label people as murderers. The blunt truth is you are wrong. 10. I wasn't really wondering about monetary value. I was just wondering if anyone knew whose they are and if they were stolen. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  11. Yes, the circus show that is called Trump is nearly completely obscuring the madness that is named Cruz. That convention is really going to be an event. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  12. Yeah, coal, no health problems there. None at all. Not even in Bejing! You guys have pretty much lost your credibility on this one. Deadenders always go down deadend roads. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  13. That story kind of smells like turtleshit. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  14. All those imaginary people who die http://www.rmi.org/RFGraph-health_effects_from_US_power_plant_emissions Here you go. Bad news for the deadenders. But they won't see it because they keep their heads where the sun don't shine. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  15. I interpret that as meaning only gay sex is legal if you are unmarried. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  16. His avatar is cute, and it seems to be holding a solo cup of the good stuff. So I'm pretty sure he's a sweetheart! He loves to push, prod, and goad. Then he feigns surprise when he gets a reaction. I'm on to his turtleful ways! Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  17. In his own words, from the foreword to a biography written by Tom Carter. He read it himself for the audio book version: "I've lived through 17 stays in penal institutions. Incarceration in a penitentiary. Five marriages, bankruptcy, a broken back, brawls, shooting incidents, swindlings, sickness, the death of loved ones and more. I've heard tens of thousands chant my name when I couldn't hear the voice of my own soul. I wondered if God was listening and I was sure no one else was." 18. Probably himself. That's what he usually does. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

  20. Dude, you are calling innocent people murderers. That's why. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  21. Once more, it does not matter what you, her, or anyone perceives the reason to be. The woman is entitled to choice. The SC of the USA says so. It is a right guaranteed under the Constitution that some people claim to love so much. It is a private matter. Not one subject to your feelings, the Pope's feelings, the Ayatollah's feelings or any conservative over controller's feelings. Don't like it? Then you don't love America. Long live freedom. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  22. There is no denying that many people honestly view abortion through this lens. And I know you see it as such. I can relate to your pain. But in the end I find it necessary to allow women the right to choice in the matter. You will probably never completely lose this scar. It belongs in your permanent collection. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  23. This is a good example of the problem. YOU put yourself in a position where YOU judge if a woman deserves the "convenience" of the option to have an abortion. You would allow it for "good" girls, those who meet your standard of behavior. But those who don't? Those you would punish by forcing them to carry through with an unwanted pregnancy. It's just NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS. This attitude towards women is despicable. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  24. I largely agree. Discussion with the potential father is entirely appropriate. But not mandatory. The offensive part to me was the giving and signing of a permission paper. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  25. No, that's not it either. The reality is that the slaves were not considered fully human, and therefore not really people. It was simply a way for the northern and southern states to divide up power in a way they could both agree on. No one gave any consideration at all to the worth of slaves as people. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
