    wind behavior!!!!

Paula.... Buildings are by far the worst objects to judge wind conditions. Especially if they are surounded by other buildings and you know the wind is blowing hard. I find the best way to see wind conditions like.............. Up-draft, Down-draft, or Bad Rotors that move across or are coming off other buildings is to let someone else exit first and let them be the wind dummy .
  2. Teacher...think FJC. You have a week of me and you're away. Mentor...Live and breathe like me grasshopper and I'll make you a star. Now go clean the toilet while I meditate. Seriously, there's a big difference...and it shows. ......................................................................................... I told myself I was not going to post on this but......... I don't know why your talking about this, It just common Knowledge. (not talking about you Skin) If you are Teaching somebody.BASE that lives in your Area. You are stuck with that Mother F##ker for awhile. All a FJC does and should do is ....... Unless that person is going home with his instructor. Make that person that is taking that course presentable enough in basic body positioning, awareness and basic packing and other mechanics to stay alive. A good example is when that person leaves potato-land bridge after several days of class and jumping, (now what ?) He/she, wants to get out and jump. that's good and natural to be hungry for a jump, but your not a BASE jumper yet ? The FJC does nothing for that. All it does is give that person The chance to acquire enough Basic knowledge to approach REAL, BASE Jumpers and have enough of the Basic Skills. So they might let you jump with them and learn to be a proper BASE jumper. New jumpers that are hungry to jump are good. That's what keeps things rolling and fun but there are (BSR).. Basic Safety rules and proper etiquette. Also a lot of passed down skills that need to be acquired. If you don't learn that it's wont take long till you get busted up. Now go out and have fun and Play Nice

  5. Post: Word! yeah...sorry about that.Blush ................................ Dude...... No sorry needed. A heading correction get out of line twist Fly the opposite direction of the Wire. Just what you were supposed to do. Now you live, to do it AGAIN....
  6. Well being that D.J and I are always looking for fresh recruits to extend our odds of survival a tad Bit Longer... A couple of months ago I took out a New BASE jumper (ManBird)... Steve. for a level 3 recurrence training, Tower jump. Well he finally got a BASE rig and made the mistake of asking D.J. and Me to take him to the famous state of Idaho and help him make a couple.... SAFE JUMPS. He also asked a couple of times where were all the other experienced Portland Base jumper he heard about. ???? So as not to scare him off to early D.J. and I, told him that they were off in Europe on a extended BASE trip. Instead of telling him there all Dead. The first thing D.J. showed him to do was to pack a 265 fox in the back seat of the car. Doing 90 mph. with the windows down, between Boise and Twin Falls. (opened on heading) Over Saturday and half day Sunday, Steve Learned to pack. Did his first Stowed jump. Jumped Slider up & Down. Did his first, Tard Also a nice Water jump with a Round. He also learned that you don't fly and flair a 245 Fox the same as his tiny, Katana.... (nice tree landing) His last jump on Sunday noon. I think I may have over-loaded and pushed him a bit to far...... For the final jump I made him do his first, Full Floating exit at the same time PCA me in freefall. Both of us, Slider Up. In his first, 5-way. with, D.J, Spence, Sauce, and Me. He put me in the water. Sucked D.J. Low, in the water with camera equipment. but still managed to keep his canopy half dry on the shore. He passed the Test......... Welcome, Steve as our new member of the Portland Crew. Nice Job.....
  7. Yo... That was Quit the Squeel of Glee you let out under Canopy. Was it from the awesome Freefall or the or the thrill of the, Line Twist and near Wire Strike ?? Good job of getting out of a problem. ...Ray

    Am I OK?

when I looked over at my dog and noticed that his "red rocket" was halfway out. I didn't want to look... but I just couldn't help my self and before I knews it, I was concentrating more on him than I was on my girl. Does that make ME gay? .............................................. I heard the fastest way for you to get rid of your Dog's Little Pink Pencil, is to just roll him over and ........ Suck Him Off. I also agree. I you are worried that you are Gay. Most likley you are.
  9. I just can not decide if this is real or a hoax ? If this is on the level, there seems to be a Crap Load of extra variables added to a simple Tie-off static line. More variables = more chance of things Not Working. You maybe over thinking this one just a Bit ? Less is More Cant you *Simply* just tie off and jump ? Plain old Break Cord, Its Simple. It works.
  10. Not to keep kicking a dead horse, But... That is kind of what I was trying to say. If it Matters and you can not remember What you packed Just take a look inside before you Jump. I will guarantee It will be packed the same way you left it.
  11. I think Not....FrogNog It is packed the same way you left it packed. Slider-Up or No Slider. * If you have mice in your Stash Bar. * If you think it is Froze. * Not a Daisy-Chained, Field Pack that you borrowed From your buddy and did not take a peek inside before you exited a cliff. Or just say .... * You did not hook your Bridal and Pilot chute to the attachment point of you canopy. It is Still, packed the same way you left it packed.
  12. I agree with that one. It is Packed the same way you left it. No matter how long it sits.
  13. On two separate occasions in Idaho I jumped a Round and a Square BASE canopy that where packed for a year. * Opened Great.* I am sure that there have been others that have jumped Canopies that have been packed much longer.
  14. Yo...Mr. Udder It kind of sounds like you are over thinking your Situation just a bit. Not to say you are wasting my time. If I had Something important to do right now. I sure in the Hell would not be typing on DZ.com. Any Canopy is better than No canopy. Just go out and jump your Ass Off...
  15. You have probley had better landings than me on your Cruiselite becouse you are not such a big dumd Fat-ass like me. I was not aware that there was a 215. I swear the only ones that I have jumped are 220 and 245 XL . Sabers are 9 cell ZP, and we dont take them BASE jumping. (well almost never) So we dont talk about them on the BASE Board. I was pretty entertained back in 99 or 2000, Br. Day when I saw that guy jump a Saber 150 and tear his leg Off when he Hooked it , into the Railroad Tracks.
  16. This not new info, It is just crap that is stuck, and rolling around, In my brain. Used a lot of, Modified Non-BASE canopies in the past. The impotent part of that statement is- **Modified. and Correctly** Tail Pocket, Break Settings, Large Dacron Lines, and a 7-cell. *don't forget that the reinforcement between top and bottom Skin at Pilot-Chute does not exist. Hard PCA, could separate Rib and skins. *Also I did not make a Habit of jumping them on High-technical Jumps. Especially on Low-Shear face, objects. Most of the time I considered them my B rigs (second choice) Anything where I had to get the heading and stick the landing or suffer the consequences. I used my BASE specific equipment. Would not jump my Cruislite anywhere that I had to land in a tight area, That thing will pound you in / Bruise-Lite. bad flair qualities. I never owned one but, Saw Slim do several Hundred jumps on a Ragged-Out old, Pegasus. He jumped that fu##er on everything. Modified, Ravens are good I owned Three of them. Still jump one. Make sure that the Tail-Seam is , * Reinforced* (where break lines attach) that is a must. No big deal to sew some one inch tape on tail seam if it's not there. Cruislites, Fury, Ravens, Pegasus, Will work great and GET the HEADING as many times as a BASE specific Canopy. (go figure that one) Even though there are some argument over Pilot-Chute, attachment points not in the ideal place on the top skin. Also will save wear and tear on your expensive BASE Canopies. Let your Conscience be your guide on this one. *also: Posting on Blinc or sending Mail of the problem. Is easier said than done.

    Tension Knot

Quote: True, but the force that the canopy (via the suspension & steering lines) exerts on the slider is going to be more lateral than downward isn't it? ............................................. It is Most Definatly Downward. Bryan, dont be afraid of using more wraps of tape. No joke, Try it.

You Bastard...... You went to the Pacific N.W. ??? You did not come down to Portland. D.J., Me, Bill Beck and Slim pulled a all Nighter Wed. thru, Thurs. evening. We did a couple jumps off our local premier Cliff. Went to dinner for Steaks and Beer at one our local Tit Bars. (nothing to good for a visiting jumper) Went to a very large concrete cooling Chimney. Went to another Large cliff Then did another bridge on the way home. Duuuuuuuuude...what-up ? We Wont Kill You. Come... on....Down. edited: (forgot about dinner)

    Tension Knot

HEY.....I been working a lot with the masking Tape and the Break Lines. Also on Direct Slider Control. I dont know about you but Tension Knots and Line-Overs Scare the hell out of me. If you have either one you probablywill not die, but just get Really F##ked UP. NOTE : These things are only my personal Mechanical Habits. There are many ways of doing things. These Mechanical Habits have been refined over my 7 years and 691 BASE jumps. .* And my not be Kosher for everyone's Taste. Read it, throw out what you Don't like, Keep what you like. Or Disregard it all together. ***Also my mechanical Habits are constantly growing and changing over time. That means that I am still learning. This is what I am doing Right Now. * To keep control of those Break Lines on deployment. * To keep control of that Slider. To promote a Firm line stretch. > Rape tape around break line cascades > That is with 1/2 inch paper masking tape. > Large Hole Mesh Slider. > Vented Canopies both with valve and with-out. > Never roll the Nose of canopy for any pack job Slider-Up or down. Examples of what I been using ....# of rapes of tape. 1.- 2 rapes on short objects slider up 450 ft. 600 ft. like delays of 3 sec. (low air speed) Small amount of direct slider control, Only. 42 inch pilot chute 2.- 3 rapes for delays of 5-10 seconds Good bite of direct slider control, Only 38 inch pilot chute. 3.- 4 to 5 rapes for big delays ? like 18-20 sec and up Good bite direct slider control + Primary stow in tail pocket. 32 inch pilot chute. I do not roll the nose. I even rape the center cell nose around the pack job. I do not get hard openings at these air speeds even with a large hole Slider. and Vents. I am finding out that the opening force when the Tail bangs open is Extremely, Under Estimated. Look what happens if you don't stow your break setting properly on packing. (you blow your break lines) * If it Can Do That. I also think that it has the force to do a lot more than that if given a chance. A logical guess would be that the Break lines and there upper cascades would be whipped through or around the other lines on, deployment and opening. Maybe a possible cause for a Tension Knot, or Line-Over. ** Also, the Rubber-band for Slider Stow, is on the opposite in-board C line than that of of the Tail Gate. It is set for the optimal Bite. For the Height of the Slider when set to the top of the line-set for deployment. All sizes of canopies are going to have a different height for the Rubber-Band stow. On the in-board C line. in relation to Slider Height . * * If you take the Tail-Gate off and use that spot for your Rubber Band stow. I find that it is, To High of a Factory setting for a Proper Slider Stow. ( make a custom setting for your slider) for that particular Size and Brand of conopy. *** I do not use the Mesh of the Slider in the Stow. I use the Reinforcement Tape, (that is around the perimeter of the slider.) when making the stow for the Rubber-Band. Both Front and Back of tape on Slider. The mesh does not touch the Rubber-band. It is folded inside the Tape. The tape is folded with mesh inside, then folded over. WHY..... ** The Mesh when used for the Stow is Bad **(in my opinion) It Rolls out of the stow on opening and is not very consistent. It Rolls and burns the hell out of the Rubber-Band when it gets yanked through it on opening. *** My reasoning behind This*** * The Reinforcement Tape around the Slider is much more of a Consistent surface texture. Mesh is Not. Grab it and just pull through your hand. . That's what I am looking for is Consistency in Slider Release. With control. Does anybody have the perfect formula ? I think not. Never Had a Tension Knot (yet), but have seen on video, on two of my openings in the past of a line over starting, then cleared by it self. also My pack jobs are immaculate. -Scary shit.

    Tension Knot

I've been using direct and indirect control on every slider-up jump for the last 4 1/2 years. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Most definatly Direct Slider Control is the way to go. I use Direct Slider controle and my own personal mechanical habits. On all Slider Up jumps. from 450 ft. to Big wall . Have worked on Direct stow for several hundred jumps. I am a firm believer.

    Tension Knot

Thanks for geting back to me. That is to bad you could not get the Knot on a visual inspection after landing. Tension knots are just plain scary. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. The few I have seen, Canopies were old and New. I was Sabia's roommate in Malaysia when he Had that, Knot and a Spinner. I watched him hook up that canopy up a couple nights before. It was brand new, just out of the bag from B.R. Freaky shit ! Don't want one. There is somthing to be said for No Slider Jumps. Seems that less is more. Never heard of a tension Knot on a No Slider Jump.
  24. Dwain is gone. We can't bring him back. All we can do is each deal with his loss in the way that is best for us. That's going to be different for each of us. ............................................................. Tell you what. Do this for me and humor me. Take the name Dwain, out of the sentence and put anybody's name in there that has died jumping. All we can do is each deal with his loss in the way that is best for us. Basically the more you jump, the more friends made. This applies to BASE and Skydive also any other group sport that is dangerous. If you are in BASE long enough you will see someone die. -Or- You will hear about someone you jumped with that died. If you just started jumping you eventually will. That is a fact. How do each of us on a emotional level deal with this fact ? To what We witness, will witness or were informed of. ? I have had several friends die in BASE, and a few die skydiving over the years. The way that I deal with the loss of friends or acquaintances jumping. I usually shuffle there image and memories to the back of my mind for storage. Where I can bring back all the good times, jumps, and whatever else we shared. I think back and Smile. That's how I deal with it. Emotionally I try to throw away the bad and keep the good. Kind of simple but it works. Right or wrong it works for me. I Jump On. Till I quite. Humor me a little more Answer me this : *How else do you do it ? *Anyone else got a better way to deal with the death of a jumper that you know ? *This is the dark side of jumping ? *How Dark do you make it ? *How do you do it ? *Do you become like a piece of Ice ? *Do you spend your time dwelling in the darkness and drowning in your own emotional squalor ? * Is there some happy medium in between you can live by and continue jumping ? ...Ray

    Tension Knot

Hey Gabriel Help me out here. I'm just trying to compile some Knowledge for my Brain. Might come in handy Latter. I have only seen, Three different jumps with tension Knots. They Two were slow spinners. One progressively got faster on decent. All were Slider Up. On the last pic. He is pulling hard on rear Riser. so the C & D lines are distorting the bottom skin, so hard to tell exact Lines. This one looks like the slider made it all the way down. * Lucky Boy * Which, Lines were involved in this ??? Was the knot still in after Landing ??? Hard to tell from Pics. Looks like it was up high. Also did he un-stow his Toggles ??? Or just attempt to control Spin with Risers ??? Thanks... Ray
