For me these are the same thing. You stop flying, deploy and create a large burble behind you that could cause PC hesitation. BASE flights rarely allow you enough altitude to fall vertically for a significant time to gain a "normal" vertical velocity. Comes down to personal choice. It works but I prefer deployment in full flight for BASE, IMO it is safer. i.e. you keep flying, never collapse your leg wing, only closing your arm wings for the split second it takes to locate the PC. Why? -You don't lose precious altitude. -I find openings full flight are satisfactory (on heading) -By deploying in flight the airflow over your body stays fast & clean reducing the risk of PC hesitation. Watching Robi fly is interesting, his one handed deployment is faster than a Tylar Durden. (balances with leg movement - try from the plane first!) From the plane I do exactly the opposite! From my limited experience of the prototype: Flying position is similar to the S3 but the arm and leg wing area is increased so your arm and leg position is wider. Arm pressure was comparable to S3. The increased forward speed is immediately noticeable and the suit also feels more sensitive than the S3. The wings are bigger but I think you'll still be able to get the BOC no problems. I always jump the leg pouch now - didn't like the look of it at first but after trying it I came to love it. No more wingsuit BOC for me, pouch works great for exits from 1100' to 30000'. With the pouch I find I can extract the PC quicker whilst helping to maintain body symmetry and therefore improving canopy openings/ heading performance. At first I was concerned about having 2 deployment systems but now it is 2nd nature to switch between freefall-BOC mode / wingsuit-pouch mode. Robi did explain the suit features, the ones i remember: -New suit material and special low friction leading edge material -Re-designed arm and leg wings, substantially increased wing area. -New wing profiles -New arm wing construction method -Mylar wing inserts -... other important stuff that i've forgotten I'm sure Robi will publish full details soon... I am pro swooping canopies and I am pro "swooping canopies"

I happened to ask Robi this question yesterday The Phoenix Fly Wingsuit will be unveiled to the public on Saturday 16th Oct at Bridge Day 2004. It will be possible to order suits at Bridge day and online shortly afterwards. The retail price is still not fixed. As for performance..... I only did one jump on the PF ws prototype in Norway but I felt the difference right away. On that first jump I out performed my S3. More forward speed, lower vertical speed and better glide. Good flyers will be able to reach 3:1 glide ratio!! Long flights, J (I still have a lot left in my S3 also... but the colours are so 80s.... )

Anyone planning to visit the tall Austrian span - check the bungee rope is not in place before you jump!! bsbd J

Yes - I mean the valley with Fondue and good chocolate ;) That other valley will have to wait a while...

Hi, will be in the valley from evening of 15th till 20th Aug - anyone else in the area? e me at: [email protected] long flights, J

Yes, I use the pouch for all ws flights (plane + BASE), very happy with it. Long flights, J

AWESOME VIDEO - MONSTER 34 SEC TRACK FROM MB
unclecharlie109 replied to unclecharlie109's topic in Archive
Locals recommend 10 - 12 seconds for low experience / people new to MB. (btw MB is NOT a place to learn BASE or to go without previous terminal slider up experience, read 'The List') Experienced jumpers who have an efficient track can make good distance down the talus and can take it to 15 - 18sec. DW (RIP) made a 22 sec delay there using track pants, video is on the net. ...... and Robi has done over 70 seconds using the PF ws I witnessed one of the prototype Pressurized suits being flown off MB - the forward speed and glide is really impressive!! (as you see in video) Long flights, J -
make sure you have windows media player 9 or later. Works great for me!! J

Check out this for a MONSTER TRACK!!! http://explore.gmxhome.de/mov/PP5.wmv 34 sec from MB Italy using brand new design of track pants / jacket from an Austrian company called 'Pressurized'. Freakin Awesome!!!!!! -
I hear the video will be released shortly.... along with a few other surprises

Robi would dump last J

Nice quote dude You're right and the pilot is what counts at the end of the day. I can see 2 sub disciplines of wingsuit flying emerging: Free flocking - having fun at sunset cruising with friends and not worrying about speeds/ratios and Performance flying - where you jump solo, striving to fly as far / as long / as slow as you can Neither is better or worse than the other (just like RW-FF ) Both are great fun but I prefer the latter. Long flights, J

Hi Simon, interesting post. Have you made any jumps with the SG using GPS - I am REALLY interested in the data to see how the horiz / vert speeds are. Do you have an approximate glide ratio? (for an experienced pilot like Jewels) Is there video of that head to head you talked about? Who was the S3 pilot? Assuming 2 experienced pilots - my money would still be on the S3. Long flights, J

Fall rate of of 35mph = impressive, but low forward speed = poor glide ratio Depends how you define "out fly". IMO to fly the suit efficiently with high forward speed/ low fall rate and good glide ratio is the real challenge. Faster, longer, slower as written on bird-man.com for the SF Slower, not as far, slower ....? S3s can be flown at this fall rate with 2.5 GR and 100mph + forward speed :) The Phoenix ws will have even better performance! I know which is my idea of flying ;) Maybe someone has a GPS in Schweeeden, then we can measure the performance of the SG - Spinning Top (aka cpoxon) have you got your toy box with you? Hi, I now have a contact address for anyone who wants to send Christine a card or present I decided not to post it here, instead please PM me and I will send it to you. J ps. fook the finns!

Hi, people have been emailing me asking about Christine. Christine (aka P.O.T.) is still in a serious condition and has a long road ahead of her. I do not have the "facts" regarding her injuries and do not want to share incomplete information or start rumours. Once I have more details I will post them here, please be patient. Also I will add a postal address for anyone wishing to send cards etc. J

Yes - it is true Please all send positive vibes to Christine. I would like to dedicate my slot on the WR to my good friend #724 who left us last week (not BASE) Fly for ever free Clod, we will miss you James #880

We already have an idea from the performance Robert gets! I've seen people fly the S3 at 2.5:1 glide ratio, I think Roberts new designs will take us past the 3:1 boundary Times of opening early on a deep spot are long gone!! J

True Tom, but the width of the fjord at smelly is less than at #6 J

Petter flew the S3, solid flyer and great guy. J

(sorry if i repeat some stuff i already posted on the BASE forum) I watched the Matter, Birdman and Phoenix track pants / wingsuits fly in Norway. It was amazing to see the progress in just one year. Last June the wingsuits flew to the landing area. (approx 0.6 mile) This year the Phoenix track pants flew to the landing area!! The wingsuits, not to be out done, flew over a mile to the other side of the fjord!! I watched Robert Pecnik fly his Phoenix prototype wingsuit, he flew so damn fast with such a flat glide that it looked like he wasn't decending. He opened half way over the fjord at way over a 1000', Kjerag seemed small :p I also watched the Matter suit, the pilot who recently started wingsuit BASE appeared to be flying well. The forward speed of the suit was significantly slower than the Birdman / Phoenix suits but the fall rate was very low, the resulting glide was reasonable, getting him over the landing area with lots of altitude to spare. I look forward to see what the coming year brings, exciting times ahead :) Long flights, J
