  1. Several of the people I jump with mix free-flying with RW - so I tried to get the sit down this weekend. I did OK on HD, but my sit was terrible - until the last 2K' of the fall where for some reason unknown to me, I just happened to find myself sitting?!?!? Why would it be easier to sit at a lower altitude than on the exit at 18K and flip/flop/spin uncontrollably for the first 10K'? Or is this just me? TIA, - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  2. Several:5:0 Went to SMB - and the FAA had the airport shut down so the airport could be used to fight the fires over at Fort Ord. So staurday started off as a bummer and turned out to be a great day. Determined not to get shut-down for the weekend, I drove over to Hollister (18K all day) and jumped there and made a few new friends. Spent the three first jumps working on my sit (pathetic as it is) and then met "Vinny the Anvil" (a great guy!) and I did a couple of speedstars with him and a few of the other Hollister regulars. So - 5 Jumps Three attempts at sits: Finally made the sit on the second and third jump... in the last 2000 feet of freefall, after some really wild "action" on two of them (go figure). One almost successful speed star (w/4 people), and then, One awesome successful speedstar (w/6) after sunset (but before it got dark). I opened - grabbed the rear risers and took a really slow ride down to appreciate the post-sunset view over the ocean, with the lights of Hollister just coming on...
  3. Waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of all of you! I did it last weekend! (and boy was my wife pissed at me!) - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  4. When I started TKD I was actually looking for a real "Karate" style school (I studied Ishynru karate for a year or so in my 20s), but once I evaluated the quality of the schools and style and personality of the instructors in my area, I'm glad I went with the school and instructors rather than locking myself to a style and then getting a boring/bad teacher/school. We mix it up too - we focus on TKD, but also as part of our testing for upper belts includes some Escrima (sword/stick fighting), Judo and Muai Tai. And we also get trained in knife, chucks and kammas once-twice a month. See if they are tradditional (don't expand beyond their dedicated art) or expand into other arts too. My $0.00002 the style is not what you should base your decision on - if you are going to make a long-term commitment to earn a black-belt in any art, find a place that is personable, has a friendly staff, a good method of teaching, flexible schedule, and lots of people in the class that will become long-term friends (they will become some of your best friends - much like the family you inherit at the DZ). If you make black-belt a goal, it will take 4-5 years and if it isn't fun, it isn't worth it. And WRT to flexability: my flexibility is shit - I can't get more than 120o on my splits (and that's in severe pain) and still can't touch my toes (when my legs are straight)... but I can hold my own (with head-kicks) in any sparring situation. You're body will learn to adapt to what it is capable of - and sometimes suprise the hell out of you (and the person you are sparring ). - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  5. You are kidding, right? - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  6. Not sure what you do for a living, and based on the circumstances it looks like you're not going to get that good a reference anyway - so I'd see if there was an option for them to "Pay" me to leave. I've seen some real "nice" let-go packages through the tech-bust, and if there is any risk on their part that they think you might be a problem if they fire you, they could pay you to go away and you (and they) agree not to sue or say bad things about each other - and you would still get unemployment. Good luck, - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  7. Don't I wish (maybe that's why my score was higher than hers?) - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  8. Me - 30%. My wife - 23%... Does that mean that at least 50% of the time someone in my house is gay? - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  9. After it crashed, I took it and "accidently" dropped it from 14K' But Gateway helped me restore it anyway. - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  10. Can anyone reccomend a good back-up utility (and hardware) that will back-up my entire hard-drive on a weekly basis? I just had a close call with my hard-drive... Thanks, - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  11. 2:7:1 2: 1- Lost my freakin altimeter (too tired when I left the DZ and left it in the packing area), and 2 - got to jump my new jumpsuit. Love the colors (will post pictures later). It's white and blue with neon green tape. I put it on and my 7 yr old son says, "Dad - you look just like Buzz Lightyear!" Is it time to change my username? 7: Jumped my ass of saturday. Lots of fun - FINALLY made the sunset load (awesome view over Monterey bay... just breathtaking) 1: First jump in the new Jumpsuit - I'll be bringin the beer next weekend. - Jeff "That's not flying... it's falling with style." Holy war

Back to the initial un-hijacked topic of this thread for a moment - Interesting article on double-standards in the media: http://www.investors.com/editorial/issues.asp?v=10/17 - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  13. Hijacked hell! I want details from Bill - I'm not kidding about the $500 a month bill thingy. Nothing would please me more than to generate extra electricity and force PG&E to buy it back at close to the over-charged rates the sell it to me for... - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  14. you know - that's funny... I was actually concerned the first few months after getting the pool up-and-running that I'd wake up one morning and have 100s of DEA and FBI agents storming the house. I run the pump 6-8 hours a day in the summer + a pond pump in the summer. The first year we had the pool was the year that Gov Gray made that bad deal.... $500/mo sucks. - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  15. I can't go - is it going to be televised? - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  16. Details please - I'd love to tell PG&E to go phuck themselves - I have power bills upwards of $500/Mo in the summer (I have a swimming pool). Size, Cost, installation details, rebates, company installed, etc., etc... Thanks, - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  17. I heard they were getting a tunnel somewhere in northern california in the next year or so - my 10 year old is so upset that she doesn't get to jump out of planes with her dad and big sister (yet). I would love to get her and her seven year old brother some ff time - and my wife too (she keeps insisting she'll go up on the plane to watch my exit - but is a long-way from "taking the plunge" herself...even as a tandem. Maybe some tunnel time could change that line-of-thinking? ... Not.) If anyone knows when/where one will be opening in northern CA - please let me know. thanks, - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  18. When you ask your wife how many jump tickets that new dress cost.... - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  19. Man, I am smokin' on this one: ================================= (From Yahoo stock news:) Thu 12:13pm NFLX InPlay: Netflix: The Shorts Are Screaming! - Briefing.com Wed 8:00pm NFLX Netflix Earnings/Outlook: 3Q EPS Tops Co, Street Views - Dow Jones Business News Wed 7:25pm NFLX UPDATE - Netflix Q3 profit more than triple own forecast - Reuters ==================================== Up over 150% in the last several months - and $7.80 just today!!! Can anyone say "NEW GEAR!" - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  20. an interesting article on the strike: http://www.investors.com/editorial/general.asp?v=10/14 "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  21. My bad one - Q: What did one frog say to the other? A: "Time's sure fun when you're havin' flies..." (booooooo) OK - so now a better one (I know, this is a bad-jokes thread). A guy is having problems sustaining his manhood in the correct position long-enough to perform "the deed." So he goes to the doctor and explains the problem and the doctor replies that there is a new experimental treatment that will cure his problem and add some length... and that the treatment is 99% effective. The treatment consists of implanting 6 elephant nose hairs into the skin of his "Johnson". So the man has the operation and is told to take it easy for a week... When the week is up he gets up the nerve to ask this hot-chick from the office out to dinner and she agrees. So they meet at this real fancy restaurant and are seated. The waiter comes to the table and hands them their menu, asks them what they want to drink and then places a small basket of dinner rolls in the center of the table and goes back to the kitchen. As soon as the waiter is gone, the guy starts to squirm and gets this real funny look on is face... his Johnson then pops out from under the table, stretches across to the middle of the table, wraps around a dinner roll and then pulls back under the table. He then turns a beat read and puts on a very awkward and uncomfortable face. He apologizes profusely to his date, to which she responds "WOW! Can you do that again?". His reply? "I would, but I'm not sure I can fit another dinner roll up my ass." (baaahhhdddd) "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  22. My wife asked me what I wanted "Santa" to bring me for christmas - I sat on her lap and told her a free-fall computer.... but I don't know the main feature differences between ProTrack and a Neptune, and which one would suit my needs better. Has anyone done a product-product comparison between the two - something like a consumer reports feature graph? I hear good things about both, and followed the recent thread where everyone talked about loving one or the other... but I haven't found an all-encompassing comparison. (If no one has done one - I'll do it and post it, just point me to the product URLs. Also, could not find the Neptune in the Gear review section) - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  23. 2: 1) Saw my first cutaway actually as it happened (not me) - cool - but then we took almost an hour to find the canopy which landed over 5 miles away. 2) Hilarious moment as one of the instructors was closing the door on the back of the otter just as we were starting to taxi to the runway - his hands slipped from the door, landed his hips/legs on the inside of the plane and torso on the outside, feet shot up in the air as he flipped on his way out the door...and then he was gone - then he jumped back up and into the plane with some few choice words... We checked him out and he was OK, so we gave him shit all of the way to altitude ("Hey, they actually let you teach?,"...."Did someone hear someone say 'mommy' when those legs flopped up?", etc...). 6 Jumps - 2 at Hollister on Friday and 4 at Monterey on Saturday. 0 Beers - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  24. Thanks! And not bitching, just curious - I mean after all, this great service is free. - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
  25. I've been getting some really slow responses from this site... has anyone else? And, I just got a message telling me the server was overloaded by the number of users.... - Jeff "That's not flying, it's falling with style."
