  1. So to continue in nerd speak then - essentially what you are saying is that the acceleration from terminal velocity to that under the canopy is not constant and smooth. So now, my newb question, what causes those 1/2 sec deviations from a constant acceleration? I would guess one would be right when the chute gets out of the bag and the acceleration takes a bump.... 2. Okay, now that confuses me - When we say "hard" opening you really mean a fast opening - insta-canopy being the hardest. Everything you can do to slow down the opening sequence makes for a soft opening - correct? As I understand it, speaking strictly from the physics side of it, the higher the acceleration, the harder the opening. Terminal speed doesn't change, the speed under canopy doesn't change so the only variable you can control to affect hard or slow is the length of time it takes to go from terminal to under canopy. So how can you open the thing in less time but not be harder? Jump Scars remind us that the past is real

  6. Has anyone ever tried to make a cell phone call while under canopy? Just pull high and dial away! I wonder if you could even get reception? Jump Scars remind us that the past is real

    Repack

We don't have a choice. The DZ keeps a record of our repack dates. When the 120 days are up, you either get it repacked or you can't manifest unless you rent a rig. Every visiting jumper's gear is checked as well. Needless to say, I feel very safe and satisfied with my home DZ. Jump Scars remind us that the past is real

  21. This is for you guys jumping the sub-100 sq ft canopies that I KNOW don't weigh sub 100 lbs from a curious newb.... My understanding of why you can safely land the highly loaded canopies is because you come in hot and convert the speed to lift to you touch down - in a similar fashion to an airplane. Where as the big ass dump truck canopies like I jump just kinda float down slowly. Can you do a float down, low speed landing with the sub-100 ft canopies? or is the descent rate too high and you really have to "fly" it to the ground to keep from doing damage? The reason I ask is I was thinking of someone landing off on a highly loaded canopy and the landing area not having much of any place to "fly" in BUT you could do an accuracy type approach. Thanks, Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  22. Sometimes you pick the path, sometimes the path picks you. I've found the best thing to do is to just enjoy whatever path you're on and not worry about where it will end. Where ever it does end, you'll get there eventually. Good luck in the classes - I'm rusty in my calc but I might be able to shake some integrals loose if I try Scars remind us that the past is real
  23. CPT? Captain?? No....No.... [sign of the cross]NNNNNOOOOOOO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD[/sign of the cross] Not another officer!! Hehe, I didn't get along well with officers However the eval read very well, I'd put you to the top of the majors list for it Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  24. We took about 25 incoming freshmen out on a trip to show them geology is fun! We got one guy to sign up as a major so we consider it a success. We saw the actual ash layer deposited by the asteroid impact that some say killed the dino's, some 1.8 billion year old rocks, cool fossils, the t-rex foot print, and a 60,000 year old cinder-cone (that's where I got excited and started hugging the rocks I really like volcanoes ) Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  25. Okay - here we go - first pics of me ever put on the net! I guess that means beer but looking at some of these pics I'm thinking I need to lay off the beer...Lou Diamond I ain't These were taken on a recent field trip to Colorado - fearless_leaders - the four field trip leaders (what the hell were we thinking?) I'm on the left. pegmatite_outcrop - I'm on the right this time! We've got all the young'uns up close on the outcrop listening to a local expert. T-rex_footprint - we had just seen the ONLY agreed upong T-rex footprint so I was happy hugging_da_rock - why am I hugging the rock? Well it was a spectacular example of breadcrust texture and you can be damn sure if it hadn't been in a national park it would be here on my desk right now end_of_trip - me and one of my married co-workers I've made the mistake of falling for At this point we were all ready to chuck the kids by the side of the road and get wasted on margaritas....
