  4. With all the talk over the forums about tracking, horizontal seperation etc., just how far might a jumper be able to track (assuming they are an awesome tracker) if going into a track right out the door down to pull time? Now I know the birdmen are all going to chime in, so for simplicities sake, the jumper is wearing a standard suit with no booties. We talking 1/4 mile? 1/2 mile? Over a mile? What kind of glide paths can you get? What's the trade off of horizontal speed to vertical speed? (I know what I want to do next weekend! ) Thanks, Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  5. Unless they all had bean burritos the night before. The method of smoke generation is going to be the hard part. I got some ideas but it's back to the lab now to see what I can cook up Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  6. Being bored at work has it's dangers.... Now I know a skydiver with a smoke trail will never be able to draw out a Q in the sky but what about this.... Imagine, 10 or so divers exit and get them selves online at regular intervals (level or not isn't going to matter). Now, each of these divers has a smoke can and a PDA stuffed somewhere in their suit. One of the divers, has a PDA that is set up as the "server" and each PDA is connected to an altimeter and a wireless connection to the server. Each PDA is also connected to and controls the smoke release. As soon as the dive starts, the server PDA tells the rest what altitude they should release a puff at relative to itself and each PDA in turn releases it's puff. So in theory you can put a strip message in the sky like an old dot matrix printer. More divers, wider strip, use different colors, etc. So in Boston you could jump out and write "GO SOX" or some such trash. Questions for the gurus - how do the smoke cans work? Can they be switched on and off? or once they are on, they are on until they run out? Has anyone ever tried this? Damn I hate being at work on a nice saturday...... 8. I got to agree with whocares here. Take away a person's possessions and really the only thing that he/she has that is truly their own is their word and integrity. If you can't keep your word then you have nothing. I'm surprised there are many that feel otherwise because in skydiving we deal so much in trust - trust in the packers, trust in the riggers, the airplane mechanics, the pilots... Maybe there are degrees of keeping your word - I don't know. I just know that when you marry someone, you give your word to (supposedly) the most important person in your life. If you can't keep and stand by that, then I sure as hell don't want you representing me to the world. Jump Scars remind us that the past is real

  12. Hi all, I've got an awesome pit special suit that I bought in 97 that's never fit quite right. I'd like to get the thing altered but haven't been able to get up with the Tony suit people. Anyone here near them? If so, could you check that the lights are still on? Thanks, Jump Scars remind us that the past is real

  15. What that big bright thing up there you keep telling us about? Don't see much of it in New England anymore... Use solar power to drive the hydrolysis. Sorry for not keeping up with the thread completely (i have no idea how you guys can post so much) but I'll personally be happy when all the fossil fuels are gone. (for ecological and political reasons) then we'll have to come up with something else and hopefully we'll get it better. Damn back to work.... Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  16. So 4 to 1 - 4 moles of hydrogen weigh 4 grams, 1 mole of carbon weighs 12 grams that comes out to be 75% carbon by my reckoning..... electrolysis is the better source of hydrogen. Scars remind us that the past is real
  17. Are you in the Green building!?!?! I'm down on the 12th floor! Thought I was the only nut around this place. Lets hook up sometime!! Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  18. [replyYou know that hydrogen comes from oil and natural gas, right? Categorically wrong. Oil and gas contain only minimal amounts of hydrogen - carbon is the major component here. That's why living things - full of carbon- have to die and rot to make oil and natural gas. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and is most abundant on the Earth in the form of water. As for the amount of energy returned from electrolysis - we're getting better at that. There was an article in the MIT tech review a few months ago about it. I'll see if I can dig it up but it's getting better. Fuel cells are almost a reality - an economic reality. I'll take water as a byproduct over carbon monoxide any day. Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  19. Sorry to hear that man. Shouldn't stop you from coming out though! You can still learn to pack, get ahead on the book side, talk, joke around, etc. Get better quick! Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  20. If you want to get even more extreme, there's ample evidence (albeit hotly debated at the moment) that in the Proterozoic - about 2 billion years ago- the Earth was basically a snowball with glaciers and sea ice extending down to the equator. Whether this is true or not, is as I said hotly debated, but everyone agrees that the majority of the planet was covered by ice. So what is the equilibrium condition? I don't think anyone knows and anyone who tells you they do know has some hidden agenda..... Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
  21. Unfortunately, I had a four year lay off (stuff for another thread entirely) and should be severly punished for putting aside something that gave me so much relief and happiness. But now I'm back with a vengance! Curiosity was the reason for the question nothing more. I knew a guy at the DZ I did my student jumps at and he was content with a B license. He could outfly many D and most of the C license holders hands down and was a great canopy flyer. I don't know what his # jumps were but it was in the 4 digit range. But if he wanted to do a beach jump he couldn't while someone more inexperienced with a C could. Just seems odd but I guess that's the way it goes. My goal is a D however
  22. No worries man! I did the same thing my first jump of the day. All you need it more practice! It'll be a few weeks before I'm back there due to work and VACATION!! You can't miss me - I got the purple protec helmet with TCU plasterd all over it - GO FROGS! Jump Scars remind us that the past is real
