isn't that the whole point of tivo? In the UK I had sky+, the same as tivo, but here I don't have either - so I have to watch crappy ads and find my life is governed by TV schedules.. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

    House

absolutely love it - in SA they are behind the UK so I'm watching what are re-runs for me. I so fancy House, it's unbelievable. He'd get it any day, unfortunately he's unlikely to show up in my bedroom . He's got a similar appeal to Horatio in CSI-Miami but he's better. He is dry, sarcastic and funny without meaning to be about things and deep down he does care about his patients. My favourite line is when he diagnoses someone as pregnant and tells her she has a parasite that will stay with her for a while, there is no treatment and he can't remove it, and the funny thing about these kinds of parasites are that some people give them names and all sorts after they cease to be attached to the body. Love him!! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

  13. The Great Transformation, The world in the time of Buddha, Socrates, Confucius and Jeremiah. History book really, but fascinating how different philosophies and religions developed around the same time all talking of 'The golden rule' of treating others the way you want to be treated. Of course right now it's not on my nightstand as I brought it over to the PC to copy the title and full sub-title! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 16. Service? What serivice? I walked into my bank (a large institution) and went to the customer "service" desk. I was told that I needed to call a 1-800 number. I am like "what?!" Additionally, its pretty sad when the help desk has to call a main office in order to find out what their IBAN and SWIFT code are. Don't they at least have the written down somewhere? I mean really...international wire transfers are a dialy thing...even in Casa Grande!! I was talking about the service of banking as a whole, not specifically their level of customer service. It the banks didn't make money somehow, they would cease to exist and then IBAN and SWIFT codes would be irrelevant as we would all have to carry cash around with us. And I agree - customer service sucks at many of these places as there is tendency to only train people on standard things, and IBAN/SWIFT being international is not usually considered standard so most of the staff know nothing about it! That's the joys of my job, trying to find a balance between people bright enough to understand multiple permutations of things but not so bright that they are unhappy with the pay and move on. Increasing the pay would only mean having to charge customers even more... tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

  18. remember I also work for a financial services organisation which is accused of constantly ripping its customers off - however a bank having the highest profits ever recorded by a company in Britain at the time they were announced is a little excessive even to satisfy shareholders... tash PS - I thought it was summer in the UK, how come you aren't flying or jumping? My excuse for week-end posting is that it's freezing here! Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe
  19. My experiences from two different banking systems in two countries: UK - cheques take 3 days to clear, some debit card transactions are instant, depositing cash can be instant, I get interest on my current account. Germany - everything is instant, I pay bank charges Basically these are two systems which generate income for the banks differently. You have to remember they need to make some money (although perhaps not the extent they actually do) to pay rent and salaries for their staff. In Germany, this money is made by customers paying bank charges. In the UK it is made by holding on to some money slightly (ok, 3 days!) longer to earn interest at the Bank of England. One way or another we will always have to pay for the service that a bank provides, in the same way we pay for any service. In different banking systems, different customs developed for making this money. Personally - I prefer the UK system, that way I'm only paying in some instances (eg paying in a cheque) whereas under the German system, I pay for the service even if I don't use it. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 22. I have actually known instances were CCIs have made a judgement from experience with individuals who are above the lowest common denominator and granted exemptions to certain rules. Off the top of my head the ones I have heard about were people being allowed to jump a full face helmet in one instance and a pin-pull rig in the other when technically they weren't supposed to. I guess in both those instances if there had been an incident/ problem it would could have had consequences for the CCI. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 23. I could pay someone to pack for me, however there is no way I could pay someone to have greater peripheral vision as I'm aproaching a formation and don't quite spot the other person also approaching who I might just bump into. As I didn't get my act together this year to exercise my right to vote for council I don't feel I have a right to criticise the BPA this year, so I won't add my personal gripes here. In their defence a lot of the rules the BPA has were put in place as a result of particular incident findings. The idea of the rule was that someone new to the sport can inform themselves about the potential increase in risk and make an informed decision. Also in the those days there was less travelling and communication across different jurisdictions, so jumpers approached other British jumpers about the rules rather than comparing them others. I look forward to seeing your name on the ballot papers for the next council vote as you obviously want to get things changed and it's only from there that you'll be able to do so!
  24. from the south-west of London it's also worth looking into Netheravon. When I used to live in East London it would take me 1.5 hours to get to Nethers - 45 mins through London and 45 mins from the top of the M3 (and yes, I tended to be breaking the speedlimits ). But as everyone else has said, it really is up to you, the different DZs in the South have different flavours and what some people love about a place is what turns others off! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion.
