  2. Out of almost 1400 jumps-no cutaways yet. I almost always do my own packing and am a little anal about it. The closest was when I screwed up, went too low and my cypres fired just as I was deploying. It had to be almost exactly at the same time because the main slowed me to the point where the reserve PC didn't have enough drag to fully extract the free bag and so I was flying under my main with the reserve PC trailing behind me. Would have then cut away but I was worried that as I was now very low, during the transition between main and reserve, I might impact the ground-so I went as slow as possible by immediately going into brakes, made very wide turns and rode the mess in. Right before landing, when I flared, the increased horizontal speed finally pulled the free bag out and I actually landed under two canopies. Talk about "pucker factor."

    Help

    Teach her how to pack!
  4. When I'm buying them for my own consumption, I like Sierra Nevada's also but if they're for the DZ, buy the cheapest shit you can and buy as much of it as you can. They won't care what kind it is as long as there is a lot of it.

    basics

There are a ton of rigging related books out there and reading all of them, or as much as you can would make your actual progression into being a rigger easier. Of course, there is no teacher like experience and unfortunately that only comes with time. Poynter's manuals (Vol. I & II) are considered the riggers bible and are probably the most important and comprehensive.
  6. I got my Senior Rigger's ticket a few years ago and have used it mainly for re-packs,some minor repairs. I like the fact that re-packs are now one less worry in my world (inconvenience, cost, trust, etc.) but thinking back I guess the main reason I did it was because I wanted to know as much as possible about something that routinely saved my life. I have never wanted to make skydiving a "job" and only do rigging work for other people when they ask me for help.
  7. I can't remember the exact quote so I'll paraphrase , "Violence does not breed more violence (a popular saying), half-hearted violence breeds more violence. Total, massive, well thought out, well executed and determined violence does not because, after it, all the other guys are dead."

  10. There was one asshole who set himself up as someone who would insure that any coffins donated to him would go (gratis) to the families of the WTC victims. He got a bunch of coffins (from well meaning companies) and promptly sold them on the black market for a huge profit. He was recently sentenced to fines totaling less than he had illegaly made. All in all he made $ on the deal.
  11. Absolutely not-I have a phobia about leaving something behind. I have an old packing drag mat that has the outline of all my tools on it. After I finish the re-pack, I make sure all the outlines are filled in.
  12. Don't know any specifics but Dave DeWolf (often considered the world's best rigger) usually gives a course every year at his loft in Pennsylvania, USA. Email him at [email protected] with any questions. Good luck.
  13. me too-while CD's give better sound reproduction and keep their original quality longer and are all I buy now, I still have 1000's of LP's bought over a lifetime. Ahh misspent youth!

  15. My name is Dan Brennan and I'm currently a weekday student and weekend drunk. After spending 16 yrs on the 12 x 8 shift in Harlem on the NYPD, I retired (just in time) and moved out of NYC to Gardiner, NY. Spent the next three years drinking beer and skydiving. Believe it or not, I got tired of that and am now back in school.
  16. S/L-that's all the closest DZ offered. Glad I did it that way.
  17. That's all right, when head down first started, I remember hearing one old timer saying "What's the big deal? When I first started we used to do that too, only we called it "unstable".
  18. Thanks-see what you're saying.
  19. I recently had to re-pack a PD 113 into a Javelin XRS with a cypres. Gave me fits!
  20. I'm sure that this problem has been agonized over as long as the sport's been around. Any riggers out there with easy (easier) ways to sufficiently fill the ears of those handkerchief sized molar bags when doing a re-pack? Sorry if this has been asked before, I'm new.
  21. have been lurking for a while, trying to figure out how to do things and decided to jump in feet first. My home dz is the Blue Sky Ranch in Gardiner, NY, have about 1400 jumps, and been skydiving about 9 years (jumped hard the first few years but have seriously tapered off lately-especially when it gets cold-used to love jumping in snow but I guess I'm getting old) Just wanted to say HI
