  1. Um..... well that makes no sense because the vector PC has more drag when inflated so I am not sure how your "test" shows otherwise? I believe her point was the Infinity pc will inflate much quicker due to the mesh bottom. Meaning you will end up with a reserve quicker with such a pc over a one with a nylon bottom that takes longer to inflate and hence longer to pull the reserve out.
  2. That's what I was told would happen by a supervisor in Phoenix a couple weeks ago. I highly doubt it would actually happen that way though.
  3. Maybe he doesn't want to be spread out and de-arched the entire dive. If you can fix the fall rate issue by changing the size of your suit then why not. I've seen plenty of large guys being able to fly their body without excessively large jumpsuits. That's what I object too. The stupidly large jumpsuits. No need. Get in the tunnel and you'll be able to fly much better.
  4. QuoteI don't know what all of the rigs are. I know 7 of the 8 with AAD's and none of the 7 without AAD's. /reply] Then why not say so. For all you are sprouting about a cover up conspiracy, you seem to be part of it. Share what you know. Otherwise, why did you bother to post at all?
  5. If low move out from directly underneath the formation to the edge and then keep trying the entire skydive to get back up. Start tracking with the first wave breaking off or if only one, at the afore stated breakoff altitude. This is the general rule of thumb. With small groups I guess if depends on your abilities and what the group would prefer. They should have discussed this you before hand, especially given your low jump numbers.
  6. It's hard to say since we don't know what type of canopy pilot you were before. It certainly can't hurt to put a dozen or so jumps on a 150, try to go for differing conditions such as high winds and no wind. Get your bearings back and get comfortable. Then see where you are at and maybe borrow a 135 for a few jumps to decide. With just 200 jumps your time off (even if just 7 months) really is a much longer time than it sounds. The fewer jumps you have, the more the time between jumps is magnified. You just don't have the natural instincts from repetitive activities built in yet.
  7. 900 100 or 900, you are still dead.
  8. Yeah, yeah, what difference does an extra 0 make?
  9. You can sure die without an AAD......provided you make no attempt at pulling
  10. Wow, natural selection at its best, that's for sure. A morbidly addicting show.
  11. Vector has pop-top?? I thought javelin and wings were pop-top (where reserve pilot chute sits on top only held down by two flaps), vector has its reserve pilot chute hidden under many flaps. I also don't understand how could toggles creep out from vector. Secondary riser covers cover toggles completely and I honestly don't see how they could just creep out (no matter how the airflow is going around the container). Just pick the container you like the most (beauty-wise). They are all good containers, all are safe, freefly friendly, good build. Theoretically the "pop-top" containers are the Reflex and the Racer. The Wings and Javelin are "partially enclosed" poptops. I do agree with you on the riser protection on the Vector. She may be thinking of the Javelin, which does in fact allow for part of the riser to be visible (if packed sloppy :) Whoops, think I may have confused the rigs but you get the gist.
  12. Yeah right. He was explicity told not to jump up and he proceeded to do just that. If you can't follow simple instructions...
  13. I have to say I think Dave is right. A 135 at 50 jumps is a bit much, no matter how light you are. There is a world of difference between a 150 size and a 135, mainly due to the shorter line length making the 135 much more responsive and aggressive, regardless of canopy type. I'm about the same size as you. My first canopy was a 170 for about 75 jumps. Then I got a 150 at about 100 jumps and didn't downsize to a 135 until a couple hundred jumps after that. You really should stay at least on a 150 until you can land it downwind in a light wind and stand it up consistently.
  14. I prefer Infinity over Vector. I don't like the pop top reserves. Too many riggers do not know how to pack those correctly and material seeps out. I like Infinitys riser covers that does not allow the toggles to creep out if correcty packed, unlike Vectors. Don't know the specifics of these on the Mirage.
  15. Get silver/gray instead. That way the dirt factor won't be much of an issue as with white. Silver blends in more. Also I would get a black harness. Makes it easier to match for repairs and such in the future if needed.
  16. You could walk away without a scratch or you could die or anything in between. Seriously. There are WAY too many variables to answer that question. It depends on wingloading, type and size of canopy, condition of gear, your descent rate, where you are landing (terrain conditions), how you impact the ground, winds, other obstacles in your way, how you fly the canopy etc, etc, etc. The only good answer we could give you would be to ask your instructor since only they will know the answers to the above conditions. I've known students/experienced skydivers that have landed without a flare that have walked away unhurt and others that have broken various bones (back, wrist, ankle, leg whatever). You probably won't actually die from not flaring but you could hit your head on a rock just right, helmet or no, or snap your neck instead of PLFing correcting. Chances are you'd be just fine but this IS skydiving after all. Not bowling.
  17. Just learned an interesting tidbit the last time I flew with my rig. I was talking to a supervisor and he stated that per their manual they are are required to swab the rig each and everytime or else if a supervisor catches them not doing it they can shut down the airport until they find the rig to check it. Very interesting as I would say the last couple years of flying maybe only, 40% of the time do I get it swabbed. Just reinforces the notion that the TSA is a load of crap
  18. So you put them in the keepers, then get to the packing area, "unkeep them" and the set them? Isn't that a good way to forget to set them? Well, that's how I've always (mostly) done it and I've never come close to forgetting to stow them. Then again I always pack for myself so they are checked again when I pickup the lines to put over my shoulder.
  19. So I decided to start a garden this year from seedlings. I started tomatoes, basil, eggplant and peppers inside. After less than a week the tomatoes and basil have sprouted but nothing yet on the eggplant and peppers after a week and a half. How long do they take? Also are you really supposed to cut down the seedlings to one per slot or wait to do that once you plant outside?
  20. That is incorrect. The school that told you you had to do AFF probably only offers AFF. You can get certified from static line without ever doing an AFF jump. Tends to take longer jump numbers wise but ususally is cheaper than AFF. Problem is seems turbine dz's are turning away from static line in favor of AFF.
  21. Not to draw too fine a point, but I know a guy who was killed golfing. And a guy who was paralyzed playing soccer. And a girl who had her arm crushed playing softball. Life's rough, man. Remember Sgt. Esterhaus. Ok, freak accidents do happen. But accidents are more likely to happen in skydiving rather than bowling or golfing.
  22. I do agree with your points. Yes skydiving can be made safer or riskier by our gear choices and actions but it is still a dangerous sport. It is not a "safe" sport. Safe sports are bowling and golfing. You don't risk death playing 'safe' sports.
  23. Cross posting is a big breach of forum etiquette. You don't want to attract the greenies form the get go
  24. Specifically check this thread out. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3803660;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread In a nutshell, you really need to lose the weight. It's a matter of safety. Unless you are willing to spend the big bucks and get a modified tandem rig and find some one willing to work with that.
