  1. My son started to learn when he was 8 and packing unsupervised when he was 9. If you run into him say hi from his old man. He's a tour rep for PD. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  2. Assuming he doesn't do something stupid like collide with the tandem pair. What exposure does the vidographer have if he films the boken leg (or worse)? Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  3. I personally think both of those canopies are a bad choice for you. Whenever someone tells you something in this sport you need for them to explain in detail why they are saying what they are saying. And if they are the one trying to sell the canopy then it would be prudent to get an outside opinion. The person who told you the Katana is better for you than the Stilleto really does not know what they are talking about. The Katana is a fantastic canopy and I jump one. But it is not a forgiving canopy. One small mistake and you will pay for it physically. It is the most aggressive non xbraced canopy I have ever jumped and I have jumped most everything out there. I know a lot of people don't put their real numbers in their profile but if by chance you did, then that says that you average fewer than forty jumps a year. I can't believe that a DZ or your friends haven't said something to you about your canopy choice. Because at a 1.47 wing load even the Stiletto is too much canopy at this point. (assuming your jump #s are correct) I know that if you ever catch up with the PD tour and give them these numbers and ask to demo a Katana or even the Stilleto they will very politely and professionally tell you no. And then they will explain in detail why they won't let you jump those canopies and then maybe offer to let you try the Sabre 2 at a much more conservative loading. Now I don't know you and you don't know me but I certainly hope you will continue to seek out some unbiased input before you do anything. You are in our fraternity by default and as a fraternity brother I must tell you that most of my friends who made bad canopy progression choices are either setting off the buzzers when they travel or have long since been buried. That last statement may seem harsh but the key to success in this sport is to survive to jump another day. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  4. mmmmm never mind........ Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  5. Bill I see there is one three or four pages down but it's about the differences between National and Regional BODs. Is that one one your'e speaking of? Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  6. I'm just wondering if people would think it valuable to have a thread where the candidates for the USPA BOD could come on and post their thoughts. They could tell us why they should get our vote and we could ask them questions about specific topics that concern us. Kind of like a town hall meeting. Moderators: does this sound like an appropriate use of this site? Maybe we could break it down to the individual regions and then a separate one for the national directors. 7. I'd like to know what different TIs use as reminders for there gear checks and hookup checks. Do you hook up your students in any particular order? do you use any acronyms? You know things like checking your 3s etc. As a pilot I verbally say GUMPST before take off and landing. Stuff like that. Thanks in advance. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  8. Someone posted you have a 206 as well as the 182. If it is a U model then you and the DZO should consider never doing tandems out of the 182 with a 6' 2" TI. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  9. So does anyone know how the POPS 66 way went at Skydive Chicago over the fourth? Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  10. Take the lens out and put it in the dish washer. Yes, It works. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  11. While on the way to a boogie I took the factory tour reps from PD, UPT and Mirage to a Walmart for some supplies. They kept talking of the need to buy some sneakers from Walmart because it's the only, shoes they use for swooping in. They said they liked them because they look very much like Van's, but mostly because the soles are the best for sliding in on their swoops. We bought three or four pair including mine. Wow were they right. These are the best shoes I ever worn for swooping. I like to drag one foot while sliding to a stop on the other and these shoes are great. Even when the grass is dry and brown these shoes have the best no grip soles and slide really well. Best part is they only cost $25.00. And believe it or not the name of the shoes: " Air Speeds". Give them a try you won't regret it. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  12. South Dakota Skydivers * 1973 * If everyone got out on one pass at 2500 feet = $1.75 But then when I was born the Dead Sea was just sick. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  13. Joe, I'm looking forward to seeing you again. Hot down there yet? Sandy Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  14. Call Mike Truffer at "Skydiving Magazine" (386) 736-4793. He sells a DVD called "Packing Made Simple". It's very inexpensive (I think $20.00 or so) It's pretty well done and you can watch it as often as you want, anytime of the day or night. You can pause and rewind whenever you need to. We use it at our DZ and then give one on one advice. It really speeds up the learning process. Skydiving Magazine is located on the Deland airport. 15. With an attitude like that ........... you might still being jumping 30 years from now. I have a motto: I'd rather walk a mile than get carried ten feet. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  16. I went to True Value and bought a hex head screw that is 1/2 inch long (thread distance). I also bought a black plastic knob that the hex head fits into very tightly. The knob is 1/3 inch thick by just under 1 1/2 inch across with scallops around the outside edge. It works pefectly and is very easy to get a grip even when I wear thick gloves. I made three of them for less than $7.00 total. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  17. Brian, I've been teaching this to everyone who will listen since you showed it to me about 10 years ago. I also discovered a very important by-product of this method. About three years ago I was packing my pilot chute and every time I tried to pull the center of the mesh out to the edge (during the first step) my hackey kept coming with it. I then realized that I had not cocked my bridle. It is physically not possible to pack an un-cocked pilot chute when using this method. A pretty nice by-product, don't you think? Sandy Grillet Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  18. You may have also noticed that when you click on the picture of the tandem another picture pops up of an AFF jump. The instructor on the left is Mark Folkmann and the instructor on the right is Mark Hobbs both from Des Moines, Iowa. I am letting them know about it and I'm sure they won't be happy. I'm pretty sure I know who took the picture and I'm pretty sure he won't be happy either. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  19. It's not a week. It's only four days!!!!!!! Yahoo........... Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  20. The balloon will fly Saturday morning, Saturday evening and Sunday morning. he will be there Friday night as well, if we have enough interest. The DZ has started a list and the people signed up will have first priority. Send your name to: [email protected] Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  21. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  22. Thanks for all the comments son. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  23. The Otter will be ready to fly jumpers at noon Friday. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  24. I say screw those up jumpers. You don't need 'em. Let them find somewhere else to jump. And they can take all those friends, relatives, co-workers and people they meet at the bar who want to make a jump with them. Hell, let them start up a jump club a town or two away and buy their own plane to make those fun jumps. Sure they may have to buy a tandem rig or two to help support the club. But who needs 'em. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
  25. I live in Iowa and we have the same law due to the meth. We can still get the original sudafed but you now have to go to the RX counter and show an ID and are limited to how many. I'm pretty sure Iowa modeled it's law after Missouri's. You should check it out at a pharmacy. Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.
