  1. It sounds like this went on a long time and that they were monitoring the baby's levels at some point. I do wonder what the doses were, and what the true story is. Neither Opiates nor Xanax completely preclude breast feeding. On the other hand, this women was an addict, and that certainly changes the equation.
  2. Please post about the statute. My understanding is that cash in excess of $10k must be declared to customs when crossing international borders. And the IRS requires banks to report cash transactions over $10k, but nothing beyond common sense requires you to document it to carry it peacefully within the country.
  3. It would almost certainly be a can of worms. If nothing else, you can't negotiation a delete if there is nothing to delete, and it could easily show back up as paid. And for everyone complaining about FAKO scores. My experience is that they do track very closely, and they can at least let you see when something goes wrong.
  4. I hope you didn't tell them you were trying to buy a house/land. If not you hold a lot of power. Go to creditboards.com for a lot more insight, but most collection agencies have very little capability to collect a debt from a well informed consumer. But you were right to ask for it in writing. You can't trust anything they say. But despite what the rules say, negotiating "pay for delete" IS POSSIBLE. Up the offer to 100%, but only if they will put it in writing and delete the tradeline from your report. If they won't put it in writing, imply they will not see one dime.
  5. A good friend and I did a statistical comparison of motorcycles, cars, and jumping. We were trying to figure out which of us was more crazy (He commutes by motorcycle every day, good weather, bad, etc). Clearly there are many ways in which we can affect our own safety in all three activities but it was very interesting. It came out to 1 jump = 38 miles by motorcycle or about 400 miles by car. If you only do one jump and and drive to the DZ on a motorcycle the commute may actually be more dangerous. The per jump fatality rate is deceptive. Most sports get their fatalities divided by the number of participants. The USPA reports this, but people tend to look at the per jump numbers.
  6. Is there any chance they were trying to communicate a different meaning? As in you might die young and Skydive while you can, at West Side Skydivers? I agree that it comes across the way you say, but it seems that it's possible that wasn't intended. You shouldn't try to market tandem skydives by talking about danger at ANY dropzone.
  7. You need to talk to people in the area you're going to be using your phone. Here AT&T has by far the best coverage (including being the only carrier at my mother in laws house), and Verizon is really good in urban areas. If I go to New York City I'm hating AT&T because they suck! For best all around, it's probably still Verizon. Sprint is a good way to get real unlimited, so they have that going for them. As it stands I want a family plan and the phone has to work at the MIL's house.
  8. When I saw this circulating social media I took it as a metaphor. The Marines will always be there for the President, but he didn't provide proper support for our Libyan ambassador and security forces. Was this portrayed as more than a metaphor and I missed it?
  9. So you are a tax cheat. So am I and I have yet to meet an individual who paid use taxes (It's sales tax if the merchant collects it, use tax if the consumer pays it) on their Internet purchases. But thanks to Amazon prime and a distribution center in my state I'm paying sales tax on most of my Internet purchases. This isn't a new tax, but merely empowering the states to collect it. Perhaps keeping sales tax exempt is a good thing, but perhaps we should abolish the use tax at the same time? Nothing good can happen when we have laws EVERYONE breaks, because it could quickly become an excuse to imprison someone who hadn't committed any other crimes (perhaps said something the local police chief disagreed with?)
  10. This works well if the DZ's use similar programs. I know I was tempted to go to Spaceland when the weather sucked here (I was through AFF jumping solo, had 10 jumps) but when I called them it sounded very iffy.
  11. They still won't be paying this tax then, right?
  12. For the wind tunnel, well we have a new 14' tunnel here in Austin. I haven't jumped at San Marcos since I did my tandems in '01 so I can't say anything about their rental gear but I have met a few of their instructors at the tunnel. If the weather is nice, rental gear might be in short supply at Temple, there were a lot of students last time I made it to the DZ.
  13. I would rather not have a state income tax (We don't have one in Texas) but if local sales taxes are constantly eroded by Internet merchants than the current tax system won't last. This isn't even a new tax. The consumers are supposed to be paying this tax already, but I don't think many (if any) do.
  14. I have the phantom and my only complaint is that I can't comfortably have a conversation with it on and the visor up. The cookie with the two types of mouthpieces would solve this. This would help when I'm getting coaching at the tunnel.
  15. I've only had the screens on Jet Blue, but if you take the brightness all the way to 0 the screen turns off.
  16. I've read they had both anhydrous ammonia and nitric acid for the purposes of producing ammonium nitrate. We'll just have to wait for the investigation.
  17. I would like to see the numbers broken down. I suspect Medicaid is a large driver of this. There will be a portion of this group with very large medical expenses that can skew the whole argument. My understanding is that medicaid can kick in for a premature infant even when the family has insurance and a 6 figure income. If the medical care runs several million it is going to horribly skew any statistics.
  18. I have a great deal of experience with what you are saying, but I've also seen PC's that worked fine 95% of the time and then croak. Never to fail any diagnostics test and not failing reliably enough to diagnose. You take your best guess and wait 3 weeks to see if it craps out again... As such I'm not so optimistic about the 4 year service interval. With the Vigil you can get readouts of the sensor values. The complexity is several orders of magnitude lower than a PC so a power on test can be a lot more thorough. Can someone with detailed knowledge indicate what Airtec actually tests on the checkup? Or would that be a trade secret?
  19. I can't imagine it would work well. The GPS receiver may not work that well in the plane, and it's going to take a long time to get a lock. And in practice the App should work in airplane mode, we are using those, right? Without the help of the cell towers I think the accuracy will decline even further. I wonder how precise the accelerometers are and if they could be used to sharpen the GPS data? I think some android phones even have barometric pressure sensors.
  20. The Tempo 190 must exist. Found reference at http://www.jumpshack.com/Read/Tech/canopy_volume_chart.htm I'm guessing that buying the mythical 190 might be a challenge. Interesting lines for this thread (too bad no optimum): Canopy Jump Shack Vol. PIA vol rec container size RAVEN I (181) 338 361 425 PD 160R w/DACRON 364 372 450-475 PD 160R w/MICROLINE 338 -- 425 Temp 190 380 -- 425-475 Now looking at the wings sizing chart linked by faulknerwn The W13 and W14 sizes seem to put the PD160R, Tempo 170, Raven-M 181 in the same container sizes. They all also list a 176R as an option but (tight). As such one size larger on the Optimum is likely to fit.
  21. I really meant to say Optimum 176, not 173. Looking at the various charts it doesn't appear there are any reserve canopies packing smaller than the Optimum, and even though it seems to be on the high end of reserve prices, it's not that bad if I can keep my container. I assume a container that fits me is going to be worth more to me than someone buying it because "it's close." I would like to put in a 193, but I read the thread about tight reserves. So if I am stubborn and keep my container, am I better off to keep my Raven I (181), get a modern 176 or squeeze in the 193? If I get a modern canopy it would seem to me a good idea to demo an identical canopy so I can do a full altitude deployment and get some practice. It's the wrong time of year for that, but... Maybe I could track down a Raven I for use as a main. When I was buying my gear I mentioned a target price and this combination was to get me there (but then I made changes and spent a lot more anyways). I shouldn't have been so cheap from the beginning.
  22. I pulled out the label this morning. It says clearly Model No: "W12-3". If you look elsewhere on this forum there is a fairly full sizing chart and the W12 is one of the few with the sub numbers. Here is a post with the sizing chart, but I also called them with that size as labeled. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3506002#3506002 The W12 sizes are: W12-1 main 150 loose 170 reserve-160 W12-2 main 170 loose 190 reserve 160 W12-3 main 190 loose 210 reserve-160 I'm surprised a 210/160 combo exists.
  23. An Optimum 193 I could go for. I'll talk to my local rigger (and maybe call a few other DZ's within a reasonable driving distance) and see how they feel about putting that in there. I know safety comes first, but who wouldn't be hesitant to switch from a brand new custom container? Sunrise did tell me 173 on the phone.
  24. I tend to use packers so I can get on more loads. As I get more practice (yes, I'm working against myself) and can pack in 15 minutes I won't have to use them.
  25. I got measured, picked colors, and wrote a check. I knew I was getting a new container, new Vigil AAD, and a used Pilot 210. What I didn't do was ask enough questions about the used reserve. It turned out to be a 1994 Raven I. This was included on the container order form and now I have an obscure size combination, a Wings W12-3. My reserve wing loading is 1.1 and I started using this on Jump 11. I just started paying more attention to the gear side of things. I just realized that the never exceed weight on that canopy is 185 lbs. I am 180 without gear. It appears that the largest modern reserve I can get in my container is a PD Optimum 176. If I show up at a different DZ with either my Raven I or a PD Optimum 176 and 32 jumps, are they going to let me on the plane? Am I crazy to use this? Thank you for any input.
