  1. I was pointing out the irony of a BASE jumper getting on the law & order bandwagon. If you were to say all of your jumps were legal, I'd gladly retract the statement. Of course, somehow I don't think I'll have to do that.
  2. Warning: inflammatory rhetoric! Then why not send blacks back to Africa? Have you seen what some ghettos look like? End of inflammatory rhetoric. The fact is illegal immigrants aren't taking our jobs. They do jobs nobody wants because the pay is too cheap by US standards. They also contribute to our economy indirectly by working for cheap, thereby reducing the costs of production. We can keep them out and reduce our social spending, but that will be offset by much higher prices. I think I saw a study somewhere that said the annual cost of each illegal was roughly $2,700 per taxpayer. That's $51 a week. Higher food prices caused by restricting illegals from entering the country would probably eat up (pardon the pun) that cost, and we'd end up paying more.
  3. This coming from BASE jumper. Pretty good. That's a pretty bigotted statement. Poor sections of town are the result of poverty not national origin or ethnicity.
  4. CrossKeys' Alouette helicopter will be making a stop at Maytown Sport Parachute Club on Sunday, July 17, 2005. If you haven't already jumped it hundreds of times at CK, come on over and jump it here.
  5. Haven't heard anything on Mirage, but bankruptcy doesn't necessarily mean going out of business. Chapter 11 bankruptcy is a method whereby businesses try to keep going while keeping the creditors at bay.
  6. Uncollapsed sliders put additional wear on the suspension lines from all the flapping around.
  7. Depending on your occupation, even a misdemeanor can have serious consequences.
  8. I think I'll turn Zeke into Henri tonight.
  9. Ooohh, and they have FREE ground training, too. Edited to add: Don't mind the peanut gallery. Go have some fun.
  10. The German war output of material was at its peak in 1945, after 3 years of aerial bombardment and after the Allies had been in Northwest Europe for over 6 months. The US/UK bomber offensive was only successful in that it prevented the Germans from producing even more war material. Also, the Allies were in a major land conflict in Europe for a year before D-Day (Sicily and Italy).
  11. Then why was Stalin adamant about the US/UK starting a second front in Europe instead of the Pacific in 1942 ? Allied forces kept a significant amount of German soldiers busy in North Africa, Italy and Northwest Europe for 2.5 years. When you add them up, the US/UK kept over 1 million soldiers away from the Eastern Front. The Russians accounted for so many losses because that's where most of the German army was.
  12. I agree it doesn't play well in the court of public opinion, but the reason for the order was to keep additional targets out of London. US servicemen/women have been frequent targets of terrorists, and right now terrorists are engaged in active operations in London. I'm glad military leaders are issuing orders based on sound military considerations rather than what looks good politically. I'd also speculate that this order was issued in full consultation and agreement with the UK military command. The US & the UK are about as close as two separate national militaries can get.
  13. "FB" means that this particular BSR can be waived only by the full board of USPA.
  14. My suspicion is they already have. Hence, the bombings.
  15. I had trouble last night. Today I logged on with no problem.
  16. I don't think the L106 is available to the "public." It's apparently a bone of contention among some folks. The only ones who have it, I believe, are the US Team.
  17. God, please let me kill myself. I'm listening to the same music as Kallend. But seriously, I just got a copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey dubbed with the music from Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother & Meddle. Echoes is set to Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite. Pretty cool. I think Led Zeppelin's Dazed and Confused (on the Song Remains the Same) comes in at 25+.
  18. The US has fought several wars on its soil. The colonists fought against the Brits in the Revoluntionary War. The US fought against the Brits in the War of 1812. The US was engaged in a very long war with the Plains Indians. The southern US states fought against a Union invasion lasting 3 years. I haven't heard of 1 incident where an American has engaged in "suicide bombing." We're much smarter than that. Suicide bombers are just too stupid to do anything without killing themselves in the process. Didn't you see Red Dawn?
  19. I am one of the two people involved in Bubbles' initial training. We were both very thorough and clear regarding situations and emergency procedures, and they were discussed regularly. Whatever happened in Ohio was not a result of any deficiency in her initial training. Bubbles, I am glad that you weren't hurt more than you are, and I hope that you heal fast. Best, Mike D. Ennis Regardless of who trained her for her "first" CRW jump, anyone interested in doing CRW is best advised to attend a formal beginner's camp. I was under the impression that Bubbles attended the one Frank Matrone ran in Cross Keys last year, and would have an an extremely thorough lecture on various safety issues and emergency procedures. If she never went through a formal beginner's camp, I think we're all to blame for not insisting that she have done so. Even if you've attended one beginner's camp, it never hurts to attend another because sitting through the lecture gives you time to seriously review what can go wrong and how to react in certain situations. This also applies even if you've done lots of CRW but have never attended a beginners camp and sat through the safety lecture.
  20. I believe the correct term is "newbie suckwad." Congrats on the new toy.
  21. That's exactly what some recent medical studies are concluding; stress increases the aging process. Researchers are finding that those with the longest life spans have a better ability to cope with stress.
  22. Man Pulled From Women's Outhouse Tank Teenager Reports Seeing Man's Face In Toilet POSTED: 4:56 pm EDT June 28, 2005 UPDATED: 6:18 pm EDT June 28, 2005 ALBANY, N.H. -- A man is facing charges after police said they pulled him from a tank under a women's toilet that was filled with human waste. Police said that Gary Moody, 45, was under a log cabin outhouse off the Kancamagas Highway in Albany. Video Man Apparently Entered Tank Through Toilet "You can draw your own conclusions as to the conditions we encountered," said Capt. John Hebert, of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. Police said that they got a call from the parents of a teenage girl who said that when she went to use the facilities, she saw Moody's face staring back at her from the hole. Moody was hosed off before police cuffed him. "It's a very filthy environment, and before we put anybody in contact with him, we had to decontaminate him," Hebert said. "We treated him as if he were hazardous material." Hikers using the outhouse on Tuesday said that the story was enough to make their stomachs turn. "He just must be sick to put yourself in that muck. Disgusting," said Harriett Voysey, of New Jersey. Police said they don't know how long Moody was in the tank, but they said the door to it was locked, which means he must have gone in through the toilet. They said they don't know why he was there. "I started this business in 1980, and I have never in my career encountered anybody in this type of situation," Hebert said. Police charged Moody with criminal trespass, and they said he could face more charges. He is out on bail and due back in court next month. http://www.thewgalchannel.com/irresistible/4662466/detail.html
  23. Where do you think the media comes 1st for info? Old newspaper clippings and the odd news site with archives, or a BASE /skydiving site? I think I made it pretty clear that the rule against initial disclosure of sites on DZ.com is a good one for exactly the reason you made (and for reasons of BASE ethics). My point is that deleting a reference to a site in an outside media source is somewhat shallow if the link to the story is included, and the name of the site can be accessed by a mouse click to the outside media source. Its style over substance and doesn't accomplish the intended result. If DZ.com wants to prevent this site from being used to desseminate site names, don't allow people to post the URLs of outside sources which name sites. Edited for tardness.
  24. Well it looks like the Goldstar Mothers have a heart after all. Gold Star moms dump citizen rule BY ADAM NICHOLS DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Grieving moms whose soldier children died in combat ended a historic rule yesterday that banned a Yonkers woman from joining their ranks. The American Gold Star Mothers voted to end a bylaw that ruled that along with having lost a child in active service, its 1,200 members had to be U.S. citizens. The abolition of the 77-year-old bylaw followed outrage after the Yonkers mom, Ligaya Lagman, was rejected by the group. Lagman is a Filipino and U.S. permanent resident. Her son Anthony, 26, was an Army staff sergeant who was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan. "Mrs. Lagman will be delighted at this decision, not for herself but for all the mothers who want to join," said Bob Foster, vice commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Eastchester, who helped Lagman apply for membership. She abandoned her quest to join after being turned down this year, and was unavailable for comment yesterday. But Foster said, "This bylaw had to be changed, even if there was just one mother wanting to join. That mother had her heart broken because her child gave everything to the United States." "This change to our constitution was the right thing to do," said President Judith Young. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/story/323263p-276340c.html P.S., Kallend, check when this rule was originally written.
