Ocasio-Cortez- I'm a big girl now!

Recommended Posts

Well, it's a bit funny*

She is being called a 'fraud' and 'too young'.

Yet Paul Ryan was called a 'genius' when he was elected.

At 28, the same age.

Is she being treated differently because she's a Democrat, because she's a woman or because she has brown skin and a Hispanic name?

* - Ironic funny, not amusing in the least.

Mainly because she's a woman. Not that that's the primary reason, but that's the easiest avenue for them to take. Note that Iago talked about her like one would talk to a dog. Such minimization and dehumanization will play a big part in the right's attacks on her. She'll be called a clueless girl, compared to a dog, told she can't handle it, told that she is "hysterical" when she disagrees etc.

I disagree, sort of. She's a lightweight. No degree other that an undergrad from a good school, no real professional chops, just some experience in education and political social justice issues. I do agree that Republicans are going after her because they think she represents all that is wrong with millennials and yes, they're playing up the points you cover.

Have you ever heard of a male congress critter being called a "boy"? If so I'd bet he was dark skinned. People often show their prejudices by their choice of words.

Well, "girls" has been used to describe adult women for a long time; I can remember my umbrage at there being men's dorms and girls' dorms when I was a freshman at school. By now, they are men's and women's dorms... Some of this is deliberate, some of it is just as clueless as some nice old lady calling me "honey" or "sweetie" when I was younger (also a cause for umbrage -- there were lots of them in my newly-feminist world).

She deserves the respect of the position. She does not deserve any more or less investigation of her degree etc. than any other freshman congresscritter. Most congresscritters do have advanced degrees of some sort (mostly lawyers :)). Let's see what she actually does, rather than says.

I'm pretty pissed at the recent Pelosi action of apparently goading Trump into saying he'll take credit for any border-wall-induced shutdown, and then publicizing that he said it. Fucking stupid, playing power games with the future of our country. Yeah, Trump did it first. Maybe he'll jump off a cliff, too :o. Yeah, he's an easy target (way easy). Someone has to be mature. If she were a man, it would also be an asshole move.

Of course Ryan was called pretty much a genius when he got elected at a young age without any experience.

I took it as a preventative action. When the shutdown comes Trump will want to blame it on Pelosi. And she knows that. She just made it pretty hard for him to carry it off now. Pelosi plays hardball politics almost as well as the senate Majority Leader. He makes both her and Paul Ryan look pale by comparison.

Pelosi didn't goad him or publicize it.

Schumer goaded him.

Nobody "publicized" it specifically, it was all on camera. Pelosi actually tried to stop it in the beginning by asking not to have the debate on camera.

The video is easily available.

So, I just watched the video. It was a pretty painful waste of time. But I see you are correct. I don't know why Wendy is pissed off at Pelosi over this. She must be getting incorrect information from somewhere. Or she is actually angry about Pelosi's later comments in a different meeting insulting Trump's "manhood". That could be seen as goading.

I didn't watch the video, just saw an excerpt in our morning newspaper. This is a very left-leaning area, so I figured if it was unflattering to Pelosi, then it might be somewhat accurate. My bad.

That is correct and his background was remarkably similar except that his degree was from a lesser school than his.

One could at least expect that someone elected to congress would know the three branches of government. You guys love to point out the stupid Rs...back atcha.

That's an interesting comment. But with no context or content. You would seem to be implying that she lacks basic knowledge of civics. But you provide no justification for your accusation.

Because she called it "the Presidency" instead of saying "the Executive"? Meh... Gonna need something a little bigger to hang your hat on.

Edit: Ah, found the reference, she refers to the three "chambers" of the government as the Presidency, House, and Senate. A bigger Meh but I don't really care much about her to begin with. Of note, she said chambers, not branches so is she wrong about how many chambers are in the legislature, how many branches there are or is she just using sloppy language to describe the three politically elected bodies of the federal government.

Light weight?

Quote

Ocasio-Cortez attended Yorktown High School, graduating in 2007,[20] where she won second prize in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a microbiology research project on the effect of antioxidants on C. elegans' lifespan.[21] As a result, the International Astronomical Union named a small asteroid after her: 23238 Ocasio-Cortez.[22][23] In high school, she took part in the National Hispanic Institute's Lorenzo de Zavala (LDZ) Youth Legislative Session. She later became the LDZ Secretary of State while she attended Boston University. Ocasio-Cortez had a John F. Lopez Fellowship.[24] In 2008, while Ocasio-Cortez was a sophomore at Boston University, her father died of lung cancer.[25][26] During college, she was an intern in the immigration office of U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy.[27] She graduated cum laude from Boston University's College of Arts and Sciences in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in international relations and a minor in economics.[24][28][29]

She's 29. She is not a light weight at all. She is an accomplished woman on an upward trajectory. And she holds a safe seat in a Democratic district. She will be a Congresswoman for as long as she wants to be. But I'd be surprised if her sights are not set higher. No wonder the GOP is targeting her for a smear campaign.

Yes. She has good marks but she's not seasoned, BU is a good school but that's still an undergrad education with no professional experience. I think she's very capable and her academics point to someone with a lot of potential but she's at the "fake it until you make it" stage. I'm sure she'll do fine, she just hasn't done anything yet.

Youngest woman elected to congress. I think she has already done more than most.

Again, when Ryan was elected under very similar circumstances, it was lauded as a great accomplishment and a clear sign of his intellect.

When a woman repeats this feat, she is ridiculed.

Agreed. I think and hope she'll do just as well as him. From the perspective of an employer if I were in a situation where the two of them worked for me I would rather give them more time in the saddle before a promotion like that because sink or swim situations can backfire. I'm sure she'll have a tremendous amount of support.

Let's see, elected to seat running as an extreme left liberal in a heavily left leaning district using the liberal mantra of 'elect me and I'll give you lots of free stuff.'

Based on her recent whine rant of 'oh, I didn't get treated the same as Paul Ryan and that's just not fair!!! (Stomps feet and holds breath)' I'd say it has more to do with being and coming off as an obnoxious hipster.

Yep. She's a democrat, and a young woman, so she's whiny and stupid. Why, she's an obnoxious hipster! Ryan was a republican so he was a superstar to get elected so young. Not just anyone could pull that off! He's a genius.

I'd say your biases are showing again. She is not an infant and she is not a hipster. She is a relatively young woman from a lower middle class background with a left leaning outlook. She is very likely smarter than either of us, and is in all probability going to accomplish more than you. She has already beat me on that count.

There is plenty for you to attack in her political views. She is going to fight to move the D party toward something that looks a lot like socialism. Even I find some of her policy positions to be unsustainable. You only belittle yourself when you resort to what looks very much like misogyny.

Her gender has nothing to do with it on my end, neither does her status as a nuyorican. I've heard her speak plenty of times, she comes across exactly as I described, and I stand by my opinion.
