Interesting essay on scientific illiteracy in Congress

Recommended Posts

Ya know... you and I may not always agree on things, Professor. But, when you talk of science; I'm damn sure gonna listen. Bil Moyers did great job on this piece.

Rep. Paul Broun who CHAIRS the science committee :S is heels dug in about the earth being only 6,000 years old cause that's what the bible says (when he probably has rocks in his backyard older than that) - I just want to say; "Here's your sign." He should not even sit on the science committee.

This is the silliness that is fragmenting the Republican Party.

Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Bill Moyers takes on radical-right Republicans for denying the science behind evolution and climate change, showing a video clip of Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), chairman of oversight and investigations for the Science, Space and Technology Committee of the US House of Representatives, who says evolution is a lie “straight from the pit of hell” and climate change, a hoax.

Would you believe he is my representative? He has my vote next election.

Which is precisely why the Republican party is aligned with religion. It makes it easy for them to get votes from the illiterate. A strategy developed during the Reagan era, which is one of the reasons the US has been consistently been going downhill since then.

I know you aren't, but you should be ashamed of the way you celebrate this kind of ignorance.

"Which is precisely why the Republican party is aligned with religion. It makes it easy for them to get votes from the illiterate. A strategy developed during the Reagan era, which is one of the reasons the US has been consistently been going downhill since then."

How shallow. From George Washington forward, most presidents have outwardly displayed their reverence toward Christianity (with the exception of the Chicago neighborhood organizer). Lincoln designated National Prayer Day. Do you think he did that for votes? The US has been consistently going down hill since the ultra left gained a foothold in the Democrat Party. Take a look at Venezuela, and you can see where we are headed.
What happens when our nasty rich people leave the country with their corporations and have a weenie roast over their burning American passports?
When it happens, all the wealth-envy activists with PhDs, will be scratching their heads (in Spanish) and wondering why all their students have left the country for work. Gee, Karl Marx never mentioned living on a diet of baloney (sandwiches) after the revolution.

From George Washington ... Christianity ....

Revisionist history is a silly thing. Try not to say silly things.

Washington was not "Christian" in any normal sense of the word. He was a "deist," as evidenced by his strong connection to Masonry, but certainly not "Christian."

How's has religion fared in competition with science for the last 2000 years? Don't pray in my classroom and I promise not to think in your church.

Each of these statements is laughably false.

The US is not going down hill--the middle class is, and those of us lucky enough to escape are doing quite well. The rich will leave when there are better schools and opportunities for their children and a better workforce to utilize. I don't see every smart kid moving else where. They immigrate here to NY and SF and start companies.

and here is an "interesting essay on" functional, cultural, and moral illiteracy precipitated by sneering "professors" LOL.

When people like that call you immoral it's a damn good sign that you're on the right track:)

The US certainly has been going downhill in scientific literacy since the Reagan era. While the best and brightest of this country are at the top of their fields, the vast majority of citizens of the US have slowly drifted into near imbecility with regards to even basic science.

That's an incredibly stupid thing to say. Obama is just as vocal about faith as all the rest of them. Just think, how are you going to bash him for listening to a radical black preacher if you're bashing him for not displaying religious tendencies?

You literally have no idea how far right the right is and how far left the left is. The idea that the USA is being brought to the brink of revolutionary socialism is utterly laughable.

statements like that require foundation, Quade.

You need to quantitatively support that scientific literacy started trending down in the 80s, and then somehow show how the GOP-Moral Majority alliance made that happen. In particular, you're going to have to somehow resolve the fact that religious participation has been declining.

Are you honestly going to sit there and tell me that the Republican party didn't make a conscious decision to align itself with the religious right during the Reagan era in order to bolster its voting ranks?

Are you going to honestly tell me that you really think that's the part of your insipid claim that I was referring to, particularly given the other statement I derided?

So, then you're agreeing with this part of the argument. Good. At least that's a start.

Now, let's start looking at Texas, the religious right and its influence in school books with regard to the teaching of creationism.
