Atlas Shrugged Movie

Recommended Posts

Starts in ~300 theaters 15 April. WTF? I thought the project was hopelessly bogged down, but they produced part 1 in 6 months or so. It will be a trilogy set in modern times. I REALLY hope they don't screw it up, but they probably will. If they do fuck it up, it will be a real shame.

It looks like a pick and choose version. The conservative backer of the film, John Aglialoro, picked what he liked from the book and completely ignored and parts of the story that didn't fit his world view.

Quote

The graphic sex scenes of the novel are considerably toned down, earning the film a PG-13 rating and making Rand's story somewhat more palatable to the Christian family audiences who are among those the filmmakers hope to court. "Atlas Shrugged" has long been a sacred text among many conservatives and libertarians, but as an atheist who had an open marriage and wrote unapologetically sexual characters, Rand doesn't fit neatly into any Christian values-based marketing plan.

To my mind, that pretty much means it's just pick and choose capitalist propaganda crap.

Lemme put it this way . . . when a rich, fanatic of a book decides to pick and choose and make it "his" way, you end up with a movie like Battlefield Earth.

I've enjoyed to book as utopic brain candy. Then all of a sudden, a bunch of weird people got all mad-crazy about it as if it was some sort of bible(which is weird as it was written many years ago. Does it's popularity happen in cycles or was there recent events this last few decades that brought out the strange?) I hope this movie does this book justice and keeps Ayn's message in tact. Not a fan of her thinking but her work deserves some respect.

I'm not a fan of all of her thinking, but I love her writing. It is brain candy and it's not realistic - it's fiction.

Capitalist crap?? Please name one socialist country that is successful.. Cuba? Russia? or perhaps Greece?
China is prospering thanks to capitalism. Progressives as so blinded by their beliefs and do not realize just how badly they are messing up this country... If you like socialism so much then i suggest that you move to Cuba or Greece or one of the other successful socialist countries .:P

http://internationalbusiness.wikia.com/wiki/French_Economic_Markets_and_Structures-_National_Debt_of_the_French_Economy

Here is a snip from the above link..
"As the national debt for France continues to increase, the economy of France is paying a high price. Although the unemployment rate is low it may appear that France is a good market for business now. However, as inflation increases along with the corporate tax rates, it will be very difficult for many companies to survive in a market like this with a drastic decrease in France’s GDP growth. Many views can be speculated about this, but the majority will agree that economy of France compared to its national debt is headed in a bad direction".

Just look to California, Illinois or New York and how well socialism is working...:|

>China is prospering thanks to capitalism.

Then by all means let's switch to the excellent China model. Strong central governmental control of industry! Forced rebalancing of income distribution between urban and rural regions! Wealth redistribution! Socialized medicine! Let's ditch those evil socialist policies of free markets, deregulation and private medicine and adopt China's more capitalistic practices before it's too late.

What is the quality of life for the average Chinese citizen? Are they free? or are they controlled by their government ? The health care bill that Obama passed is the first step in controlling the people, which is the ultimate goal of the progressives.
here is what Reagan said a half a century ago...

And yet comes nowhere close to the Chinese ideal that you were touting above.

So which is it? Is China's remarkable success due to their government's version of "capitalism" as you claimed above? Or is it a socialist/communist country that is crushing the life out of its citizens and economy?

China had the fortune of inheriting the biggest mecca of capitalism...Hong Kong

The idea that China is successful has yet to be determined.
With capitalism , every person has the opportunity of fulfilling the "American Dream", to become anything he works for. to being rewarded for standing out. The same cannot be said for socialist who would give up their freedom and opportunity to the American dream for a small amount of security.:P

>The idea that China is successful has yet to be determined.

Well, you said they are prospering, and they are indeed both the fastest growing and one of the top five economies in the world. Hard to argue with that level of success.

>With capitalism , every person has the opportunity of fulfilling the "American Dream"

That is rapidly becoming the "Chinese dream." The "American Dream" is rapidly becoming "get on a reality TV show and make a million dollars so I can buy lots of Chinese and Japanese products."

>The same cannot be said for socialist who would give up their freedom and

Lots of communists are doing very, very well - and indeed achieving what used to be known as the American Dream.

It's funny that Ayn Rand, an avowed pro-choice feminist, anti-Reagan and anti-Vietnam war activist has become such a heroine of the right.

It's the money thing. Tell the 1% they shouldn't have to pay ANY taxes and it doesn't matter who you are, you're their hero.

at least they are consistent - $$$$$$$$$$$$$ (and nice you admit it is (was) "their money")

on the left, as long as a politician has a 'D' next to their name, they can do everything their "R" predecessor does (and much worse) and still be called a hero

I revised that about 2 seconds later, it was "not intended to be a factual statement." ;) So, it needed to be revised for those lacking the gene that enables the rest of us to read subtext.

Given that you read the subtext of 'your boy' as being a racial slur, you might want to check into some viral splicing on yours - it's obviously defective.

Awesome reply coming from a guy that till[sic] can't figure out that 'your boy' is common slang.

How'd you graduate school given that you can't seem to detect the word 'your', anyway?

Gee JR, I guess "your (offensive word)" really is different than simply "(offensive word)."

How did I not see that before?

I'd love to see you test this theory out in real life though.

I have - rational people realize that it's slang. Others evidently use projection.
