billvon 2,435 #1 April 21, 2010 Sexism at work... ============= For decades, journalists, scholars and activists seeking to understand the soaring number of people locked up in U.S. prisons over the past 40 years have uncovered -- or just look enough to see -- overwhelming evidence of systemic sexism at every level of the criminal justice system. Yet, there has been a wide reluctance to name sexism as one of the primary factors fueling the prison boom; as sentences have gotten longer and parole granted less often, even the starkest gender statistics -- like the fact that males are incarcerated SEVEN TIMES as often as women are - are completely ignored. Now a new study examines this disparity. Max M. Schanzenbach, in his paper "Racial and Gender Disparities in Prison Sentences: The E ffect of District-Level Judicial Demographics" describes the blatant sexism shown towards men in the US judicial system. "Studies of federal prison sentences consistently find unexplained gender disparities in the length of sentence and in the probability of receiving jail time and departures from the Sentencing Guidelines," the report concludes. "The gravest concern is that sentencing disparities are the result of prejudice . . this can be interpreted as evidence of a paternalistic bias among male judges that favors women." When will this outrage be corrected?
