Milo 0 #1 June 5, 2002 It seems the Russian authorities are a bit more accomodating to jumpers than US authorities. It looks like they installed an escalator for the jumpers!http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/020604/168/1n6cv.htmlmilo

mountainman 0 #3 June 5, 2002 I bet that is a great view looking over the edge. Just think of all the lawyers that would be swarming around that thing like the "mother bee" was being held hostage at the top.JumpinDuo.com...news, pictures, skydiving and links. skreamer 1 #4 June 5, 2002 In South Africa they used to give BASE jumpers discount on cable car trips up Table Mountain (ie cheap single tickets). I understand this was stopped after a (non-BASE) fatality."Look before you jump, don't die until you're dead"
SkydiveMonkey 0 #5 June 5, 2002 Quote cheap single tickets Why do you only want a single ticket sir? It's a long walk back. Nice looking rucksack by the way !! Let's go play chicken with a planet !!
SniperCJ 0 #6 June 5, 2002 "Why can't we have those over here?"Simple, because we have a litigious society willing to sue at the drop of a hat, a million lawyers willing to take frivolous lawsuits for the almighty dollar, and judges unwilling to throw out such lawsuits and fine the people bring the frivolous suit to court.JC
skreamer 1 #7 June 5, 2002 Skydivemonkey is from the UK, I don't think he meant the USA when he asked that question. But I still doubt we'll ever see one of those here... "Look before you jump, don't die until you're dead"
hobbes4star 0 #8 June 5, 2002 don' t be so sure i was reading in the paper that Colorado is considering letting base become legal... has anyone else heard about this????why jump when you can fly
SkyMissy 0 #9 June 5, 2002 BASE is legal. Tresspassing is not. People will not let you jump their building/ antenna/ bridge because of lawyers and our countries liability laws. Again, hardly anywhere (BLM land, and that's constutionally argueable) is BASE illegal.13,500' to the ground. We're dressed like clowns. The door's open. Hit it! hobbes4star 0 #10 June 5, 2002 i wasn't saying that base is illegal although i believe that it is against the law, but I am not 100% certain??? what i was saying is that colorado is thinking about letting legal base in BLM land. why jump when you can fly
PhreeZone 15 #11 June 5, 2002 BLM land has always been ok for the most part... NPS land on the other hand.....If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will....
Remster 24 #12 June 6, 2002 Quotei wasn't saying that base is illegal although i believe that it is against the lawIf something is against the law, its illegal. If there are no laws covering something, then its not illegal. the jumping off something bit of BASE jumping is not covered by any laws that I am aware of in most western contries (i may very easily be proven wrong on this one). You're always exposed to disordely conduct when you do something out of the ordinary though...NPS have the arial devilery BS, and most owners of structures dont want to give you access, hence the trespassing is the illegal bit.RemsterMuff
Jasmin 0 #13 June 6, 2002 Believe it or not, the police have a funny habit of making the charges fit. So although I've yet to hear of a law specifically detailing BASE-jumping as illegal in any country, you'll get charged with something (as some of us know first hand).Walking across freeway bridges is illegal in many countries, they'll get you for that.Attempted suicide, they'll try and get you for that. (This is my personal favourite: after all, if it were suicide, why would we wear a rig?!!)Tresspassing: especially if its a National Park or Reserve.Behaviour resulting in grevious bodily harm: if you or your mate gets hurt.Y'anyways, you get the idea.I still think it holds: if you're prepared to do something dangerous and something not condoned by the government of the country you're doing it in, you must be prepared to face the consequences. And as sad as it is, I can see their point of view: I've lost many friends to BASE jumping, both here and abroad, and the footage (and feelings about it) ain't pretty, let me assure you!Hang around skydiving for awhile, watch mates bouce and have building/cliff-strikes (and see the result). When you've seen that happen, you'll think a little harder about why specific sites are "illegal".I'm not anti-BASE, its just we need to think a little harder about why people would want it to be illegal and address those concerns (and then we can all have a little more fun!).Nb the safety display jump at El Capitan is a prime example of how NOT to go about addressing these concerns. www.darwinawards.com
