Finally...High speed internet access in my area! Anything I need to know about it?

Recommended Posts

Just found out today that high speed cable is finally available in my neighborhood (still no DSL though:(). Called and signed up for installation and should be up and running on March 9th!

Since I've been stuck with a 28.8 dial-up for the last year and a half this should be a major improvement! Anything I should know about it in advance? Downsides, etc...?

Makes sense. I was willing to kill to get it, but till now the cable company just ignored my threats. I wonder if it's a coincidence that last week they got my bill for their forklift repair, and this week I can get high speed cable?:D

Thanks for the tip Bob. Putting a firewall on my "to do" list before hook up!

Greg

Try Sygate Personal Firewall -- it's a freebie and I have had good results with it. You can get it from CNET ot TUCOWS.

No need to DL it until you get your cable modem, and you'll be amazed at how quick it goes!B|

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

Yea, personally, I'd go with Zone Alarm. It is an Awsome app!

I used it here on my cable modem right up until I added my Linksys Router/4 port hub (is there an echo in here?). Nothing beats a hardware firewall, but Zone Alarm is as close as you are gonna get for free!

Don't do it!!! Broadband will ruin your life!

You'll find so much more to do online that you'll have to force yourself to get up from the computer and take care of basic bodily needs. Your skin will turn pasty white and you'll develop carpal tunnel in your wrists. Your ass will get fat from sitting in that comfy chair eating bonbons and surfing the net each and every one of your waking non-working hours.

On the other hand, there are lots of free porn videos out there and they download quick on broadband. Not that I'd know or anything like that.:)

Thanks Jim, I'll take your advice and go with Zone Alarm. Would you recommend paying for the Zone Alarm Pro, or will the free version suffice?

Also, can you splain the difference between a software and hardware firewall for me? Thanks!

I never saw the need to purchase the Pro version, so i'm unsure as to what other benefits you would get from it. Maybe someone else here knows.

Zone Alarm is a software firewall. It actively blocks internet traffic in both direstions. Incoming traffic from unknown sources are blocked, and anything outgoing from your computer needs to have your permission first. It hides your computer from the net by masking it's ports.

The router is a hardware firewall. It assumes your ip address for the internet, and assigns new, local addresses fr your home netwok, even if there is only one computer. It hides you from the internet by forwarding all net traffic only to the computers that have requested the info, and blocks the rest, since the blind stuff from the net only sees the router, and not the computer.

That's close, but I'm tired. I'm sure someone will fill in the rest after I've gone to bed.

So, nothing will change then?:D

I've used zone alarm for years, no problems with it. Pro isn't needed. Anytime you open a program that needs to connect to the internet (like those CD players that check the music databases to show CD track info), a pop up alert will ask if you want to connect. This way any types of hidden codes that want to communicate out (like those hidden in HTML email spam) will send out that alert.

Once installed, test out if the hacker world can still get into your system by visiting https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
and using the 'Shields Up' test, the 'Probe my ports' test and the 'Leak test'. This site is pretty cool, has lots of info on keeping your system safe, important if always connected via cable modem.
