indyz 1 #6 February 23, 2003 Dual boot back and forth between Win2k Pro and Redhat Linux 8. Up until about 5 days ago I had been a Debian user, but I helped a friend install Redhat 8 and was very impressed. Debian is just too far behind the times. narcimund 0 #7 February 23, 2003 I've lost track, but I think we have around 25 computers between the two of us. Most run FreeBSD. A couple are still RH Linux. Three are Macs. One is Solaris. There are probably a couple of windows machines in there but I don't pay any attention to them. First Class Citizen Twice Over

skr 1 #16 February 23, 2003 >IRIX 6.5.12m on my SGI Octane Unix workstation. I had an Indy at work when these came out. I talked my boss into getting an O2 for her workstation. One day I was exploring some of the new stuff on her machine, but displaying it on mine, and I was looking at this VRML thing that you could drag the mouse across and it would do stuff. It also did musical chime stuff when you dragged the mouse across it, but I didn't know that until a bit later when I went down the hall to ask her a question. I stepped into her office and she and the main system admin were standing there looking at her machine with "that look" on their faces. "What's going on?". "We don't know. All of sudden it started playing music!". I had to 'fess up, but it took a while to stop laughing. That SGI stuff was the nicest hardware and most fun software I've ever played with. I'm jealous that you have an Octane at home. Skr
jerm 0 #17 February 23, 2003 ROTFL..... oh that's priceless.. so anyone have a vidcard for an SGI Challenge box (the small 2u one, not the big rack-lookin thing)? I have one sitting at work with no drives, no vidcard (of course it's not pci based) and no console port that i can discern... maybe one of the unlabelled little round connectors (re: old mac/sun serial ports)... been driving me nuts, i have an SGI that i could take home if i wanted.. but have no clue how to get at the thing, functionally.... gak Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
Kris 0 #18 February 23, 2003 QuoteI had an Indy at work when these came out. I talked my boss into getting an O2 for her workstation. Ahhh...the venerable Indigo. I have an Indy2 in my attic and I had an O2 but it died miserably and wasn't under warranty. I found a sweet deal on the Octane on Ebay and couldn't pass it up. The VRML app sounds like one of the many demos they load the OS up with. Very nice stuff. My favorite has to be the SGI box logo screensaver. Kris 0 #19 February 23, 2003 Jerm, Ebay, my man, Ebay. You can pick up drives & sleds, and video cards for SGI all day long. As for having a console port, you need to have the POWERChannel 2 Interface Board installed. It provides the following connections: Serial Parallel SCSI bus interfaces Flat Cable Interface (FCI) AUI Ethernet port RS-232 serial ports x 3 RS-422 serial connector And here's one for sale on Ebay for $100 with 40 minutes left to bid...
