weegegirl 2 #6 September 18, 2003 he's from out of town and wants to come visit and make a jump. he probably ways 260 if i had to guess and we cut it off at 230 i believe. i'd have to tell him before he decides to come visit.
jtval 0 #7 September 18, 2003 maybe I am different but I never have a problem telling ppl that. its not like they dont know but theres no reason to be malicious about it. just come out and tell them that they have to weigh 225 or less. a good friend should understand that you arent being an asshole but they should also know they are heavyMy photos My Videos
Unstable 8 #8 September 18, 2003 I've had to do this on a Number of Occasions. I tend to be indirect to the situation, it makes it easier on the person. I put it in terms of Gear TSO's or other regs - It makes it easier for them to think they can't jump because of a beuracracy - not because they are simply chunky.=========Shaun ==========

jtval 0 #10 September 18, 2003 Quote - It makes it easier for them to think they can't jump because of a beuracracy - not because they are simply chunky. i guess it may just be me, but if you try to protect their feelings b/c theyre overweight, dont you feel youre insulting them? I do. I tell them the weight limit and then I ask how close they are to it. I have never had anyone get mad at me. its not like theyve only been overweight for a few days. they know it. I dont try to sugar coat anything. it seems like an insult when ppl do it to me and I am only extending that courtesy EDIT: B/C MY SPELLING WAS ATROCIOUSMy photos My Videos
weegegirl 2 #11 September 18, 2003 okay, but i kind of screwed myself on this one. i've been trying to convince him and some other college buds for years to do this. i think at the start of my convinving he really did only way 230ish. as he's gained the weight over the years, i just let him continue to yap about it, thinking he really never would want to, so it wasn't a big deal. well, here i am and he's saying he's ready. freakin whuffos! airbigdaddy 0 #12 September 18, 2003 The max suspended weight on the Vector reserves is 500 lbs so if you find a tandem master light enough, they could take him. My tandem exit weight is 207 and the heaviest student I have taken was exactly 293 (with harnass, altimeter, hat, and all). We do charge extra, though, because if the wear and tear on the gear and TM.-Lambert- "It's better to be looked over than overlooked."
jtval 0 #13 September 18, 2003 LOL, well chances are he wont do it anyway! if you are afriad to say anything. just make your plans (for the time he's there ) around things other then skydiving. I bet he wont even mention it. unless thats the PRIME reason he's coming to visit. i wouldnt use an excuse, though. I personally find it insulting and childish for ppl to lie to me to try to protect my feelings. I am different then most ppl I guess. I like to tell it like it is if he really wants to jump hell lose the extra weight.and it may help his health if he losses enough weight. sticking your head in the sand is not gonna make it go away. there are so many more thing you cant do b/c of his weight. eventually youre gonna hafta brave up and tell himMy photos My Videos
JeffD 0 #14 September 18, 2003 I weighed 260lbs for my tandem. Got to go with Jay stokes (small guy from Arizona Airplay) I've got video but dont have a way to put it on the net. If the gear can handle it then it will be hard on him. I about passed out because of all the weight on the leg straps on opening, I got a bruise from underarm to underarm from the chest strap because is smacked me on opening. We even had a standup landing. But it can be done just depends on where/equipment and it wont be a comfortable canopy ride.

Sebazz1 2 #16 September 18, 2003 It should not be hard to explain why there are weight limitations. Safety is number 1 and that is that. This sport is not about tempting fate or skirting death. Just a good healthy adrenaline rush. The gear can only handle so much weight. Tis unfortunate for larger people but it is what it is. Heavy people present more of a risk to instructors, more of a risk when landing and more of a risk of failure of the gear. Especially a main or reserve. It's sucky but people of certain proportions and weight may not ride this ride...

juanesky 0 #19 September 18, 2003 Quotehow would you explain to a good friend that he is too heavy to make a tandem? (or she if that were the case) Tell Him to follow these diet and that he can be zooming through AFF in a flash: New Views on Exercise -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap. Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables? A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable slop. Q: Is beer or wine bad for me? A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three categories: animal, mineral, and vegetable. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they're not on the periodic table of elements, so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables. Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc. Q: At the gym, a guy asked me to "spot" for him while he did the bench press. What did he mean? A: "Spotting" for someone means you stand over him while he blows air up your shorts. It's an accepted practice at health clubs; though if you find that it becomes the ONLY reason why you're going in, you probably ought to reevaluate your exercise program. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Sorry... Can't think of a single one. My philosophy is: No Pain-No Pain. Q: If I stop smoking, will I live longer? A: Nope. Smoking is a sign of individual expression and peace of mind. If you stop, you'll probably stress yourself to death in record time. Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? A: You're not listening. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you? Q: What's the secret to healthy eating? A: Thicker gravy. Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach. I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about trying to live a longer and healthier life."According to some of the conservatives here, it sounds like it's fine to beat your wide - as long as she had it coming." -Billvon

dbattman 0 #24 September 19, 2003 What kind of shape is your friend in? It was my understanding from conversations with various people that the tandem weight limits were driven more by fitness than by equipment. A typical man much over 235 is probably not in very good shape- likewise for women over about 170. This probably varies so I would have him call the drpzone first. We had someone out for a tandem that musta been approaching seven feet and had quite a bit of meat. He jumped with the smallest TI we had. Too bad there was no video- we were wondering how he managed to do that dangling from the harness on a guys back. But as Lambert said, Vectors have a 500 lb limit. Just a thought. Dagny 0 #25 September 19, 2003 If you can't work something out for him then it's probably best to just tell him. Maybe you could just say something like...the DZ has a couple of safety rules so you don't have a heart condition, right? No. You don't have epilepsy, right? No. You weigh less than 230, right? ummm...no? That might be a good way to start a weight discussion. I went with a group of friends for our first tandem experience and one guy who is big, big, big and muscular weighed too much and manifest told him it was a no go. It sucked for him because he had to wait while all 13 of us did our jumps and had to endure a 4 hour roundtrip for, essentially, nothing. It's gotta be easier to tell a friend that he weighs too much then watch him sitting all bored and depressed at the DZ.Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali
