TO WHOEVER STOLE MY LAPTOP FROM THE FARM:

Recommended Posts

I'm the kind of person who spends hours and hours in front of his computer, and then carries his most valuable equipment to one dropzone after another just because I think my friends and fellow jumpers deserve to be entertained by good music. You are apparently the kind of person who takes that as an opportunity to brazenly steal someone else's hard earned personal property. So frankly, I'm not sure if you and I even speak the same language. But I will put this as plainly as possible:

I want my files back.

Regardless of why you decided that you were more deserving of the things my family has worked for than we are, even you should be able to admit that such things as:

-Mine and my wife's work and school files,
-The 14,000 song music library I'm using to start my DJ business,
-Every photo I have of my children, family and friends,
-And fuck it. EVERYTHING stored in that hard drive and computer is more important to me than it could ever be to you.

Now obviously, what I really want is my hardware back, safe and sound, in the case you so bravely stashed it in before you took it, but perhaps the sense of accomplishment you got from taking it is too much too part with. Perhaps you're actually so cynical that you feel I should be penalized for trusting my fellow skydivers to respect my property. So I'll actually make you this offer:

Return my hard drive and cables to me, files intact, and I will give you the money to purchase an identical one for yourself, or to use as you see fit.
I think this is a better deal than you're likely to get on E-Bay or at your local pawn shop.

As for the laptop itself, you may have noticed by now that it's password protected and bears very clear property markings both on the outside and inside. That, combined with its tracking software, may make it worth less than your trouble to use or sell. So I may be willing to discuss terms for its return as well.

Or you could just prove your humanity and your balls as a skydiver by taking the entire system back to the Farm and leaving it somewhere safe where management will find it.

Of course, since I've come to rely on my fellow skydivers to help out when needed, I am also offering a substantial reward for anyone else who can lead me to recovering my property:

-A LARGE, older model Dell Inspiron laptop Model 9100, clearly marked on the bottom as a business item, and
-A Western Digital 250G external hard drive, about the size of the average Bible, with a clear plastic shell and red LED lights running along either side

A police report will be filed by the end of today (Monday 4/3)

For this business, I can be contacted at: [email protected][/B]

Damn dude, that really sucks.

I leave my laptop out at the DZ because i use it to edit tandems and the thought that it and my camera are sitting around often freaks me out. Then i put it out of my head because we're all "family".

I'm sorry to hear that this has been tainted for you and I hope you get it back.

Dude,

That so bites-If you think it will help, have the crook contact me, I'll "broker" the transaction so that they don't have to contact you directly. If they do contact you, yell at me and I'm good for $100 of yur recoup fee (Maybe you can burn me a good driving mix with the files you recover)
I am not the man. But the man knows my name...and he's worried

no locals. Lots pf jumpers from all over So, anyone from illinois, kentucky, indiana, dc or wherever you came from. keep an eye out or maybe even check out local porn shops for this laptop.
What sucks is robbie left the computer out so people could enjoy music while they were still up. Hopefully, someone is playing a prank on robbie for all his raving on here. If so, the joke is over please give it him back

Maybe this could be a Sticky for a couple of days??

As the computer is worthless without passwords maybe it will turn up.Robbie I'm sorry this happened to you.To everyone else, our sport is not the same as it was a few years ago.I learned the hard way at one of our events when we had some cash disappear. There was a day that I would leave all of my gear lay in the hanger all weekend and even go home at night.NO MORE.The last few years have seen an undesirable element oooz into our sport and we have made it welcome. It is sad when people can point out the people that they would not trust with their stuff but we tolerate them being around.Almost every large event I went to last year someone lost something and this is sad.I believe someone knows who did this.Someone saw something.I would like you to think about this.If this person will steal Robbies stuff they will steal yours too.All you have to do is wait till their car breaks down or they need their next fix.Everyone that thinks this is Robbies problem,Your wrong. This is our problem cause your stuff could be next.

Were there locals at The Farm or just skydivers?

No locals there.
Especially not between the hours of the 4:30 am.. Last confirmed time the Laptop was seen and 6:00am when a Staff started cleaning the Hangar and noticed that it was no longer there.

The sad reality is that this was almost definitely done by a Jumper.

The Laptop was hooked into the Farms PA system and providing Music for the Hangar all night. Whoever stole it took the time to collect all the cables, Pack it up and walk out of the Hangar with it.

I feel the same way but the reason why I'm so paranoid about my equipment is not because I think a skydiver may steal it is because of the many not DZ people hangging around like tandems and their family or just people who like to observe I think the possibility of a skydiver stealing is slim not saying it has not happened but I think is more likely to be an outsider.

Sorry for your loss of equipment I have a laptop and briefcase with camera equipment several lens etc thats got to be my worst nightmare

Im so sorry sweety... Id first find out who all was awake at that time. Since it was so early Im sure it could only be a handful.

To the person who stole it. If you are to much a coward to return it in person or what not. Send it to the farm without a return address. Its a computer that is needed to help his family grow. Robbie and Marianne will give the shirts off their back and do no deserve this... they have 2 small children to support and will be hard to replace this computer.

That sucks that someone would take anyone elses equipment. My only question to you is why didn't you have any of that stuff backed up. I can understand the 14,000 songs since that takes up a tremendous amount of space. But things like family pictures, school files and any other personal information should be backed up constantly. Anything on my computer that is relatively important is also store on a CD and a USB drive and kept in a safe place. I update the USB drive every time I put something important on my computer, and the CD about once every 2-3 months.

You are apparently the kind of person who takes that as an opportunity to brazenly steal someone else's hard earned personal property. So frankly, I'm not sure if you and I even speak the same language. But I will put this as plainly as possible:First thing -- Talk to the manifest person. If all the people there were skydivers, maybe you can pay The Farm to send out a printout of this letter to everyone who skydived that day. Post this message on the dropzone billboards. Talk to everyone there. Not everyone is on dropzone.com.

Time is of essence - before the thief "decides" what to do with the laptop.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your files... That really sucks, the loss of all that stuff on a laptop really hurts...

I only backup my files once every 6 months (via burning to a couple of DVDR's -- basically my "C:\Documents and Settings" subdirectory tree, where all my personal files are stored). I do exclude video files for a separate backup to another computer instead, as they are too big to fit on a DVDR.

I'm thinking of buying one of those nifty programs that "automatically synchronizes" a laptop hard disk to a backup folder of my desktop computer everytime my laptop reaches WiFi range of my home LAN. Something that's one button and doesn't require any other manual intervention. The same thing can be used to synchronize between two identical external hard disks automatically so one can be left at home. Then I don't need to worry about forgetting to do backups... Losing my files is a scary scenario to me too :(

just because I know where your coming from and I also know how much all those music files are worth. I chipping in $500. but In return, I want to see this person behind bar's... so there is now close to $1000 reward for anyone who can tell us who did this, and there is a conviction.

If I see this person behind bars, I will give $500 to the person who turned him/her in.

What really pisses me off is that the Farm put this boogie on just to show what kind of environment this place has and how great the regulars are at The Farm, and then for some people that have never been here before to get a experience of how great this place is. I feel like who ever did this took full advantage of nice local jumpers like it was nothing! The person who took that lap top is NOT a true skydiver and Karma will come back and bite you in the ass.
I you have any decency and you do not want this to come back at you ten fold, you will return that stuff even mail unmarked since I am sure you do not have the balls to return it in person. That is their life on that computer, that is sooooooo wrong.

Dude, I know how you feel. I came back from Dublin 2 Sundays back to find several pair of Gatorz missing from the dispay case. We all agreed they were there on Friday as we haven't sold a pair for a couple months. The company's display case has a space at the hinge where someone with small hands can bend the lexan to get in and take them. It had never occurred to me before but we had one of our manifest girls demonstrate it could be done.
The shit bag that did it took about 4 or 5 pair (case holds 10 or 12). That tells me it was more than likely a local. If someone had come in off the street they would have taken all of them.
So if someone knows if anybody was selling Gatorz "out of their trunk" at Dublin let me know.
Certainly not as bad as losing your files. That represents work, creativity, and time that can never be replaced.
We also had it happen at the Freeflight Festival. Video Cams and other pawnables were stolen from various folks. What the hell is up with that? What kind of people steal from their friends and compatriots? If you need money that bad, skydivers are always the first to pony up and help.

Sorry to hear about this man.

ShimShim and I were still going at 5am, but I dont remember any music playing then. By that time I was lucky to remember where to go to sleep.
there was a guy out side the hangar before i turned off the outside lights, but I think he was staff as he was picking up trash. Again the conversation is fuzzy at best.
There was a small number of people drifting around late (3:30ish till about 4:30). There was a guy sleeping in the hangar on an air mattress, maybe he saw/heard somthing. I have some video of where we put all this crap around his mattress. I will check the time stamp and see if there was music playing then. Maybe I can help narrow the time window down.

again, sorry bro, I know what its like to lose stuff that is way more important to you than to anyone else. [:/]

Dublin. But,Salsa picked it up and turned it in.I got it
back later that night.I know thats not even in the
same ballpark, but it really hurts to think a skydiver
would steal something so valuable.:(>:(
