What do you think of this suit?

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago, before going to a real estate convention in Vegas, I posted a picture of an old sports coat of mine and asked if it was too dated. Though some people liked it, a lot of people thought it was a little out-of-style. In an attempt to update my wardrobe, I picked up this suit on sale, before my trip. However, my dad/boss talked me out of wearing it at the convention, saying it is too contemporary/trendy for a business setting. Now I feel like I'm yo-yoing between extremes. What's your opinion?

Ok, here is my opinion take it for what its worth, but let me start by saying that I personally wouldn't wear that suit. I am a much more old school style suit wearer. Dark colors pin stripes pleated front. As far as ties and shirts I am all for pastels, and bright colors but as far as the suits go I would go with something from Brooks Brothers, or Jos A Bank. I like Polo alot but I am not a big fan of the way they are cutting their trendy suits these days. I am not a fan of the "purple Label" look. That is their super fitted line of clothes.

The cut was what bothered my dad/boss too. The main thing he didn't like is Ralph Lauren's shorter, tighter jacket style. It's a little hard to see because I have my hands in my pockets, but you can see it in the second frame of this attached photo. He also wasn't a fan of the flat front and tapered legs on the slacks, but primarily it was the jacket that bothered him.

The dark, pin striped power suit is overkill for most real estate settings. I was hoping something like this would be a nice compromise, but I may just end up going back to a casual sports jacket and slacks.

The attached series of photos includes a second picture of me in the suit, taken before the suit was tailored, that shows the length better. Ignore the slacks in that frame--They were too long and riding too low because they still needed to be fitted. The attachment also shows the different cuts to which I'm referring.

The shark skin look is contemporary, personally I don't like shiney. Also ditch the black shirt, seriously looks bad. Oh and shave. :D

My 2 cents:

Skinny-cut is the trend, right now. It is hard to pull off unless you are a thin build and it looks as if you are. On the other hand, it is a trend, so it may go out of style soon and I predict we will be back to more traditional cuts in menswear. I like contemporary suits, but it depends on what type of business you are in. If you are in the advertising/art business or casino biz - this suit is great. If you are selling grannies life insurance or investment strategies, this suit is too much.

I like a black shirt with contemporary suits, but you may need a tie at your convention. Opt for black. Anything else and you will look like a mob hit man.

If you want to please daddy and his customers, you may want to look for a black wool suit, white shirt and colorful tie that is not too crazy. Gucci and Zegna makes some of the best ties that I have ever seen.

Last but not least - remember, you are dressing for your customers, not yourself. :o)

Wear a classic white polyester leisure suit or old tux with a frilly shirt. You will be the only person anyone remembers from the Vegas real estate convention.

Ditto! That suit might be a little too "trendy" for a banker's convention, but not for a RE convention in Vegas. Just my humble opinion!

Since you didn't end up wearing it, what was everyone else wearing? Was your dad right?

I too am in real estate, and I dress more conservatively than trendy. I am in Commercial Realestate which puts me infront of CEO's and Presidents more often than not, and I generally opt for the conservative look. I also wear seersucker a good deal, but only when it is in season. I like the southern business man style. But if you like the tighter pants and jackets then more power too you. Also i think that Brooks Brother's make the coolest ties, you can get them in any color combo you want and they are a simple diagonal stripe. I LOVE THEM.

Of course my sisters make fun of me, and say that i dress like an old mam, but what can you do...

I usually brag that I am proud of the fact that I dress very well for a forty-year-old man (I'm 26), but for once I thought it might behoove me to update my look a little bit.

I was originally going to do a traditional navy pin striped suit, but my dad said he thought it was "too much" for the convention. He didn't want me to look like I was trying too hard, since a lot of guys would just be wearing slacks and dress shirts. I ended up doing slacks and a sports coat one day and slacks and a polo shirt the next. It worked fine for the convention, but now I'm trying to refine my "look" a little bit.

I love traditional diagonal striped ties. I'll have to run down to the Brooks Brother's outlet and check out their selection.

Hambone, who do you do commercial real estate for? You weren't at ICSC, were you?

Edited to add: The dress at the convention was pretty traditional, but it also ran the gamut from very casual (actually saw a couple of guys in shorts) to a few guys in the old pinstriped power suits. More casual (but still traditional) suits and sports coats were the norm. I don't recall seeing anyone else in that cut of suit, but I'm not sure that alone precludes its use for future business functions.

Any suggestions as to what color dress shirt I should wear with the suit?

Yes, I have gorilla arms.

My facial hair has been discussed on DZ.com before, and it looks fine.
