Leather helmet

Recommended Posts

They are called frap hats. Check around at retailers but they generally go for ~125 or so, new. Your DZ may have some for purchase too.

edited to add: I haven't seen a brand name/manufactor associated with them. They are just simply called "Frap Hats"

There are several companies who make them worldwide, although they are not as widespread as they once were. The ones I like come from The Hat Shoppe. I have had several over the years.

You can buy them from many different gear dealers, but I would recommend buying a used one on eBay - they show up there all the time. You will save yourself some change by doing that.

Hat Shoppe was the leading American manufacturer of leather hats, but they were also widely marketed by Parachutes de France, Para Sport Italia, etc.

However, leather hats fell out of fashion for skydiving like a decade ago!
They are only good for keeping your ears warm and mounting Dytters.

I'm glad to hear that someone else is still jumping them. I thought I was the last one. Oh well...I never was much of a "fashion plate" anyway.

I still have two, but very-rarely jump them these days. My last "sport" one; it was blue with orange arrows' got so sweat soaked that the front leather simply rotted away! I went over and over it with a zig-zag machine to keep it intact. I am going to sew muffs to the ears of that one for muff brother initiation jumps.

Most student operations still use frap hats for tandem passengers. Lots of demo teams still use frap hats as well. Another good thing about a frap hat is ease of packing on commercial flights.

That's exactly the reason I have mine! :)

You may want to check with your DZ. I got mine at my DZ for 80 canadian bucks -- a really sweet deal for a brand-new, perfectly fitting hat!

I always wear one for civilian tandems.

Yeah, me too. Since "helmets" are required in the UK, all tandem students, and nearly all their instructors (if they haven't gone for some sort of shell) where them over here. Mind you, I'd never worn one until my tandem course when I had over 900 jumps! Now that I've got one, I have worn it for RW, when I've been travelling and didn't have room in my luggage for a hard shell, and on hop and pops.

I still have one too, however; I can not remember the last time I wore it :S
I bought my from "Chet" at the Turkey Meet in Z-Hills in 1980.

I always seem to have my FF2 on taking pictures.

Never give up the "Frap" hat, it may come back in style some day!!!

If you get a Para Gear catalogue there is an ad for the Hat Shoppe . It has a chart to determine your head size. Also colors and how to gat printing on the cloth over the rubber tubes. Mine came as my 60th birthday present with my SOS number on it, 727, for my 727 jumps. After having one for 20 years plus I found a way to wash them .I pull the cloth inside out at the kitchen sink under the faucet . I just use liquid Tide or so and scrub it with a brush rinse and wring it out and dry over night.

I still wear my Frap Hat.

I like taking it off after opening and clipping it to a lateral.

Anyone remember when skydiving was about freedom . . . ?

And here's a little secret.

You look like an idiot doing this! LOL . . .

PS - I do wear a hard helmet for BASE, but that's survival, not fashion.
