It could be Poison Ivy. You are correct about the east coast west coast thing. I think the symptoms look exactly the same though.

Naw, poison ivy is little bumps you get all over your body in no particular pattern, sometimes turns into little to HUGE blisters.

Poison oak is a nice straight line that just lays there and BURNS til it feels like it burns down to your bones., but it never gets any bigger or moves around or anything.
I have an up front and personal relationship with them both, and they are both active here in the midwest ALL year long, even at 15 below zero.
If I add some to a fire, even if they seem dead, I will get them from the smoke. See? Smoking IS bad for you!

One of the first things we taught the boys in Cub Scouts was DON'T throw poison ivy on the fire....yep, you guessed it... every camping trip some dumbass adult scout leader would get some in there....

What I find works the very best is to wash frequently with extreeeeeemley hot water and the most stringent soap you can find. For some reason the really hot water makes it sting like crazy during the washing, but then numbs it up for the next little while. I've gone thru lots of calamine, but the hot water thing works better.
Oh man, it's about time for me to get it again, and have it most of the summer
