Best Movies of the 2000s

Recommended Posts

So here's the situation. We got weathered out at Raeford and I went home, started drinking and watching some awesome movies. So here’s the question: what were the best movies of the 2000s? I’ll start with 2 –

Star Trek
Gladiator

What ya got? And yes, I've been drinking for hours now...

Great picks! I was gonna mention Star Trek. AVATAR would be next.

"Mulholland Drive" (2001)

Be warned;
I had to watch it three times before I figured out WTF happened.

Ditto, and I did that in the first 24 hours. Watched it at 8ish or so one night. I couldn't sleep because I couldn't stop thinking about it so I got up at 1 AM and watched it again. I kinda had inklings as to what I'd seen the next day, so I watched it again when I got home from work, at which point I was pretty sure I had the time lines and reality/fantasy sequences properly ordered.

The odd part? I got the basic plot from an emotional standpoing the very first time, despite having no clue how Lynch had gotten the story to come through.

I'd also offer up The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby, V for Vendetta, and almost anything Sean Penn touched, especially Into the Wild, I am Sam, and Mystic River.

For big Hollywood films along with some that have been mentioned: Casino Royale, The Bourne Identity, The Departed, The Dark Knight and all Pixar films released that deacade:P.

Smaller (but incredibly awesome) films include: Lost in Translation, City of God, Pan's Labyrinth, The Lives of Others, Howl's Moving Castle, Persepolis, Shaun of the Dead.

As a general rule, decades do only have 10 years:P

Good call to the guy with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Very funy, great script, great acting, awesome Saul Bass style opening credits animation, should have been huge! Hollywood needs more of that type of invention, not just endless identical genre comedies.

Team America!

Fuck yeah! B|

I'd like to also add, only the unrated version... the rated version doesn't have any of the puppet kinkyness and only a little puppet sex.

Just prior to that part:

Her: Only if you can promise me you'll never die.
Him: You know I cant promise that.
Her: If you did that, I would make love to you right now.
Him: I PROMISE I WILL NEVER DIE

Thats the rated version... I would be surprised to find the unrated version on youtube.

The unrated one has much more...:D:D

Just watched that clip of the unrated version... Ahh, I remember when I got my SGM to watch this on my first deployment... CLASSIC!

OK, I have a new favourite film of the decade - hell, one of the best I've ever seen!

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Swedish title: Men Who Hate Women)

Sometimes there are foreign films that get 5 star reviews from all the serious cine-phile reviewers that you know are going to end up too serious, too arty to be really great. This is just excellent.

Like the best type of taught, tense Hollywood thriller with an intelligence and real world menace beyond almost any film that's been touched by the hand of a Studio. Like the very best bits of LA Confidential, Se7en, All The President's Men and The Departed blended together and given an added depth of realism and unexpected brutality that puts it above all of them. Plus the finest, most original and uncliched heroine to grace the screen.

I cannot rave about this film enough. There's a big Hollywood remake on the way (David Fincher, Daniel Craig), but watch this one first. It. Is. Awesome.
