how can i maximize a laptop for internet only use?

Recommended Posts

i have an asus laptop (big mistake) that i want to use almost exclusively for internet. it came with a shitload of crapware that i can't get rid of and asus won't give a clean copy of windows 7 so that i can do a clean install. it locks up often and sems to get bogged down very easily. i have to delete temporary internet file multiple times a day. i can't even watch streaming video with it without the video being very choppy, while an older slower laptop i have works fine. i do have a copy of widows xp i could put on it if i were to reformat the hard drive, but would it work? is there something in the asus motherboard that would keep xp from working? it is 64 bit. i don't even know what that means. what is the best way to strip this thing down so that web browsing is faster and better?

btw, i've scanned it for viruses and spyware.

you could ook into and try googles chrome operating system

i dont know a huge deal about it but from what i remember you install the operating system and then when you turn on your computer it boots into chrome which basically is not much more then a web broswer, all the apps etc are web based so if you do want to do a bit of typing you can use the apps threw the web.

if i understand it correctly it would mean there is very little installed on your laptop besides the operating system so performance should be good

down side is you need to be connected to the internet to use things like the word processor or spread sheets or whatever but that dosnt sound like it matters to you

I've never used an ASUS lappy, but I've used their mobos and other hardware and they have an excellent reputation. If you have the Win7 key for your machine (should be printed on bottom), you can probably install from any disc and use that key. You can get a Win7 CD practically anywhere, pretty sure you can even get ISO from MS website.

You could also install XP. 32-bit OS on 64-bit hardware is no problem.

What are the specs? How full is your hard drive? The things you say about streaming video and internet temp files don't quite add up...

Before 'blowing away' the current contents of your hard Drive ... you could try to remove applications and Windows 'Features' that you do not require (they can always be turned back on if necessary).

Go to Control Panel ... Programs ... Uninstall Programs .

Then you'll see all of the bloat-ware, some of which you can remove.

Send some stats on the thing. Need to know more. RAM is key when dealing with Vista and WIN7. 3 Gigs minimum, 4 is better. A clean instal, from a borrowed, or disc aquired online, would be best. As a previous poster said, you have a KEY CODE for WIN7, you don't need a specific disc, or set of Asus installation discs. Any WIN7 disc will work.

Also, not sure why you can't remove all unwanted programs and crap-ware? Get in the "Add-Remove Programs" and start uninstalling.

Also, may I suggest you try Google Chrome Browser, or Firefox by Mozilla? You may have better luck over using Int Explorer?

it looks like it has 2 hard drives. one is labelled OS(C:) and has 49GB of 74.5 GB free and the other is labelled DATA(D:) and has 208 GB of 208 GB free. it seems odd to me that there would two hard drives in a laptop. is it possible that there is one hard drive that is partitioned to look like two hard drives?

it also has an AMD Turoin X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-75 2.2 GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM.

it doesn't seem to me that there should be a problem surfing the internet.

Maybe take it back to where you got it for some help. I have an ASUS netbook that is about 3-4 months old and I love it. Took a little while to get rid of the stuff I wasn't going to use, it it is fast and great for e-mail and the web.

It came with windows 7 and I use Google Chrome for browsing. Add "SpeedBit Video Accelerator" for videos and the videos will stream without interruption.

That is a partition.
It's not really a whole different hard drive.

This should be a pretty good laptop. Looks like you have a 320GB hard drive partitioned into 2 physical drives. Try Google Chrome and see what happens. Asus has wonderful support too. You could give them a shout, but it would cost you if it's not under warranty.

I have 3 Asus lappys and don't have that problem.
One came with Linux. I switched to XP later and then had to regenerate the Linux install. Then went to the XP install again.
If you call their support line they can walk you through how to put it back to the original configuration.

The other two have XP and I have no problems with them doing internet video.
The only video problems I have are related to the latest flash version, that seems to crash every once & awhile.

The crapware should be able to be removed via the control panel.
Or you could nuke the directories that hold those programs and then change the registry to eliminate errors that show up.

Here's something I did not realize: Even if you do an install of XP that says 'format the HD' you can still get back the original install.
Worked on both the linux and XP lappys. But you have to do some trickery in CMOS to go back.
Their tech support can walk you thru it.

But one caveat, you'll need to boot off a CD player and not the HD to 'go back to XP'. You can change boot order in CMOS.
Windows does not allow you to install a previous version over a later version.

We tend to install Linux on "old" PC's that are too tired to keep up with Windows. It usually gets you a few more years as Linux is generally not as bloated. If all you are after is interested in is the internet and basic word processing/office documents then Linux is fine and easy to use.

Quick question: can I replace the Windows on my HP netbook with Linux (no CD-ROM drive)? I'm not sure I want to, but probably. I use it for web & light document stuff. Since I will be using it where there is no net access sometimes, I definitely need to have it be useful as a standalone computer.

The problem is that it's a Windows. If you had a Mac you would have no such issues.

If he had the money for a Mac he could have bought a decent Windows PC:P Besides Mac is just expensive Linux

If your netbook lets you boot from a USB port then there are a couple of flavours of linux that will run from a memory stick (knoppix is an example).

This would let you keep Windows untouched on the hard-drive and use Linux when you want to without all the dual booting hassles. It has the advantage that you don't need to worry about your porn history either:D

+1 Mac is VERY expensive. I used to hate Apple/Mac and then I realized that I had numerous IPod's, IPhone's, etc.. in my posession hah!
