any dryer specialists out there?

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know how to troubleshoot dryers? Mine won't really dry anything. It runs but all the clothes are still damp. Problem is we can't call maintenance, we kinda have more pets than our lease allows :$ Anyone have any advice for common but easy problems to look for before I bring in somebody?

Clothes get hot still?

If so, sounds like a clogged vent.

If not, sounds like a broken heater element connection.

Clogged vent if it gets hot. Gas or electric? If it doesn't get hot and it electric there is a "thermal fuse" for the heating element, inside the dryer. Look up the make, model on the net. You can call local or might be able to order the thing on line. works to keep the heating element from melting. Pretty easy and cheap to fix. Bunch of stuff on the net on how.
U only make 2 jumps: the first one for some weird reason and the last one that you lived through. The rest are just filler.

if it's a gas dryer and it's not getting hot, see if there is a small door which you can open...maybe on the front or side. near the bottom.:|
inside there is a coupler which regulates gas to the burner...

as it cycles , an electric element should start to glow, and then the regulater will click , gas flow starts.... and you should see the flame start... that's how a gas dryer gets its heat... I have had the case where it clicks... but doesn't ignite at which point the glow element cycles OFF..The drum still rolls.. because that runs off>:( an electric motor,, but there's zero heat..

Dust or lint or any debris can get up in the works and cause that. or else just some sticking of the moving parts.. inside the unit.
MY response was to take a small hammer,, and Tap on that regulator assembly, in a few spots.... solidly but without killin' it.... :o that can help to cause a successful activation of the unit... on the following attempt....leave the access door open so that you can see in there and turn the dryer on...step back to watch . from a distance...

It does seem to me that this response is only a temporary fix.. as the problem Can re occur.... and since I am a GUY... it's OK for me to do something something silly/ stupid:S:P...... like banging on a gas dryer.... ( and it DID work.....) However a Woman.. Like you.. is probably waaay smarter than that...:)

BUT when you have a dryer full of wet clothes.. :( that can change things...
It seems that at some point I did have to have that component replaced.. ( it's a Maytag)but the temporary fix did hold up for a while...
good luck..

:)

I'm pretty sure they'll need to look there :P

and to everyone else, it's electric. I want to see if I (or probably ski) can fix it before I go to all the trouble of shipping the cats off for a few days to my parents' house. It'll turn and the clothes do get a little warm, but they end up being only not-cold and still really damp.

You can trouble shoot if you have a multimeter that can test for continuity.

It will be one of only three components most likely:
1. Hi temp limit unit
2. Thermostat unit
3. Actual heating element

All of these are usually in a metal duct underneath the drier.

Basically you need to take the wire connections off these items, and test across their two contacts. If there is continuity they are good, if it is an open circuit it is bad.

I bet if you search by your model number on google there are repair videos on youtube, other threads, guides, etc.

Good luck.

Another alternative - put all the cats in a bedroom, so the maintenance guy doesn't see any more than you're allowed to have. They aren't going to be looking for an extra cat unless you've recently pissed in the property manager's Corn Flakes. If they were, they'd claim water leak / emergency repair and come on in with the minimum notice required...

You think you have dryer problems; I didn't even have anything wrong with mine and now look at it! :|

I hear cussing and I hear banging...that's not usually a good combination, at least when appliances are concerned. :P
