Did I answer correctly??

Recommended Posts

The instructor doing my gear check just saw the last entry in my logbook and thought I should do a little written test before going up again... One question was "your're about to land on the roof of a building, what do you do?"

I answered "PANIC!!"

Was that wrong??! :D Ok, I should have put - don't go there in the first place... Propper spotting, find DZ early, open at correct altitude, do good landing pattern - there: building(s) totally avoided :P

Could you just have given him the gallic shrug and the disinterested stare??

At Empuria for 3 weeks B|

And as the guy was French, I probably would have scored brownie points by shrugging and giving him some attitude!!! :D:D:D

ETA - In all seriousness, the guy was cool. It's too windy to jump anyway, and just to be safe, I re-read the PIM a bit to refresh my memory - all good stuff :)

Are you getting some tunnel time too?

I will see how bad my flying is first, but yeah, probably :)

And the right answer if you are going to land on a roof?

"1. A jumper could land into the side of a building or on top of it.
2. Make slight steering corrections to avoid the building or object, but stop any turns in time to prepare to land.
3. Procedures for landing in or on a building:
a. Prepare for a hard landing (PLF position).
b. Flare at ten feet above the building.
c. Strike the object feet first.
d. After landing on top of a building in windy conditions, pull the cutaway handle to prevent being dragged off the building."

But I still think it's better to avoid builings in the first place, as per my earlier post :P

So how do you feel about Antennas, Spans, and Earth?:|

b. Disconnect RSL if equipped.

Does not good to cut away just to be dragged off the roof by your main :)

Yes, totally!! Thought about this after and I'm surprised it's not in the PIM...

:|

As for Antennas, Span and Earth... I think I need to be A LOT more current before thinking about these things!!! :P

psst .. if you've cut away your main .. surely it would be your Reserve that drags you off the roof if the RSL is still connected :P

Yeah.. did not state it right but meant the main would cause you to be dragged by the reserve.

I think she got the point.

I did :)

Only if your reserve is skyhook equipped would that be a real problem. We've tested it and an RSL opened reserve on the ground, even in high winds, does not have the pilot chute drag to deploy the bagged reserve. However, it's nice to undo your RSL first, just to save the $60 and hassle.

Lets see some progress pics both in the air and on the ground.....;)B|

How's this for progress:

Day 1 - too windy
Day 2 - too windy
Day 3 - high pull, solo "almost-sit" (confirms I need coaching!!)
Day 3 - 2-way "sit" (further confirms I need coaching!!) with reserve ride!! Happy I opened with a lot of altitude to spare :)
Day 4 - solo "sit"
Day 5 - (today) coaching with Freefly Babylon about to start... B|

My goal - be able to control my flying and play with other people :)

Bit of a mess above me... Slider came all the way down, but my Sabre was inflated on each side and just looked all funny in the middle. Kinda thought I might have a line-over but wasn't sure... Tried to shake it out and then it started spinning very rapidly... This was at 2,700 feet but once I started spinning I just chopped the fucker. Not sure *exactly* at what altitude the reserve opened but when I thought to check my altitude again (once the reserve was all good), it was 1,700 feet.

And the moral of the story is: always set your brakes... :S:S (Insert massively embarrassed emoticons here.)

GOOD Work (was it your pack job? :P )

Yep. Hence why I'm so ashamed of my story... :$:|

Tehe .. .. we live and learn :)

Yeah, but truthfully, my first hint should have been when I was packing... Everything felt strangely low... It was weird enough that after I set my canopy on the ground to fold it into the bag, I wasn't confident so I went back to my container, followed the lines through, shook it out and started all over again. It felt exactly the same (weird) and so I thought you know, I haven't packed in 4 years, I'm just imagining a problem... :S

But no. The problem was there... Shoulda listened to my gut (and even more importantly asked someone for help). When I got my rig back, I packed in front of someone to make sure I wasn't missing a single thing. Jumped that pack job and had a beautiful, normal opening :)
Lesson learned. Funny... Some things you think you will never forget but 4 years is a long time... :|
