Reverse Trick or Treating?

Recommended Posts

So I'm at a nice hotel right now. Knock on the door, despite the Do Not Disturb light being on, by the time I get halfway off the bed and to the door to look at the peephole, the door is opening and a dude starts to walk in. I said, "Ummm... excuse me but WTH?". He said, "We just wanted to wish you a Happy Halloween with this token of our appreciation for being a loyal guest of XXXX XXXXX. I didn't hear anyone in the room so I was going to leave it in the room for you." I told him he scared the hell out of me and he apologized.

OK, here's the dilemma. Would you make a complaint for someone entering your room despite the Do Not Disturb light being on? I didn't put the latch or deadbolt the door at that point because I had just wheeled the room service cart inside and sat down to eat instead of following through with the latch/deadbolt. Usually I'm quite safety conscious.

I'm half grateful for the gift and half ticked that someone would enter my room without permission. I always use the safe and never leave valuables out. I just don't like the thought of someone seeing my personal belongings uninvited.

I could hear him going up and down the hallway after I closed the door doing the same to other rooms...

Would you mention this to management?? :|

BTW - It was a 3 part box of candies and dried fruit wrapped with an orange ribbon.

No, I would simply call the front desk and ask them to come remove the body.

You know, if I were home, that would've been the case. ;)

I haven't called yet. I hate that I'm on the fence because I'm thinking what if this gets someone fired? Ugh ugh ugh. I think if I was out of the room and came back to find something in the room like candy/etc I would've gone bitch on wheels because I wouldn't have known for sure how long they were here or what they did while in here.

They treat me so well here too... ugh.

I just called the hotel manager and she said she was very happy I called to let her know. She said it was a very, very new bellman and he was tasked with delivering gifts for the event I'm here for but all staff are told to never enter a guest's room, unless it's a life threatening emergency, when the Do Not Disturb light is on. If I wasn't here and the DND light is on they were supposed to leave a message on my TV screen and phone.

She's going to take it up with the employee right now. Hope he's not the one who comes to get my luggage when I leave. [:/]

Don't be. How do you know he wasn't doing it as cover for the chance to steal something quickly if he found a guest's room unoccupied? Yeah, I'd be on the phone to the front desk before the door closed behind him.

I know better. My line of thinking from all of my years working in the system always goes to the worst in people. Like you said, cover up story for something in case he going to do something that was less than honorable.

I was talking to someone at breakfast this morning and they told me they'd bet he's already been "escorted from the property". And to quote the person, "Those Indians don't play." There's security at every elevator bank and you can't get upstairs without your room card/ID. Now you gotta worry about the staff.

Oh well. Thanks for the words. I have a massage booked for later. Hope the male spa attendant doesn't come in the ladies locker room again... but that's another gripe/bitch/story. :S

BTW, when I leave the room I'm leaving a hidden camera rolling. Should be interesting. Maybe I'll get the ghost of Anna Nicole Smith in my room. :D

Thanks for that link. That Youtube page is a treasure trove of useful - oops, I meant interesting information.

hey Lucky, don't worry about getting the guy fired. If he meant well, he needs to learn. If he didn't....
[/begin rant]
If you'll permit me a small rant here: burglars, rapists, con-men, and miscreants of all sorts depend on two things. People are polite; people are trusting. The guy who comes to your door to "check for a gas leak" might be from the gas company, or he might want to get in your house to steal your virginity or your jewels. Don't worry about offending him. Tell him to stay on the porch while you call the gas company to verify. Keep your knife in your hand while you make the call. If he's for real, he'll understand. If he's not for real, he'll understand.
If you're out jogging and someone approaches you, move to avoid him. If he keeps getting closer, tell him loudly and emphatically "That's close enough". Keep moving away, but get ready to crank up the whup-ass. Don't worry about making a scene. If someone is rude enough or thoughtless enough to make you feel threatened, you don't need to be embarrassed by sticking up for yourself.
[end rant]
Carry on.
You don't have to outrun the bear.

Now you gotta worry about the staff.

I used to travel 10 months out of the year, about 130 stops a year, 3 days per stop...that's a lot of motels/hotels. I never left anything worth stealing in the room. I did notice that quite often my suitcase would be opened and rifled through.

You pretty much can't trust anyone.

Some booby-trapping of the suitcase would be in order if that happened to me. At minimum, a few authentic-looking rubber snakes, tarantulas, and a glitter bomb.>:(

Is it stressful for Americans to live in a world every stranger has to be treated as a potential serial-rapist/mugger?

Few weeks ago I was on business trip to China and towards the end of the trip it got pretty tiresome having to treat every single person approaching you as con-artist/scammer. I imagine living your entire life in a place where having to treat everyone you don't know as potential kidney thief would get pretty tiresome.
Your rights end where my feelings begin.

Well, it's only that way if you make it that way. I don't treat people like that, and so far, so good.

Not stupid about it, but, well, I'd rather lose a little via missed trust, than my good nature.

Not really. There are actually very few predators out there. The vast majority of folks are not "up to no good."

A bit of caution, attention to body language, awareness of surroundings, normal "situational awareness" will go a long way towards staying safe. And most people understand sensible precautions (like asking the guy from the utility to see an ID)

I drive truck, and am often in fairly sketchy areas. There are some places that I will not get out of the truck after dark. There are truck stops that I will not park overnight at.

I get the occasional "sob story" from someone begging for money. I never give it. The best ones are the people begging for gas money - often wearing high-end designer clothes. They get a little annoyed when I refuse to give them anything, but offer $50 for a $300 jacket.

There's also a pretty common scam where a guy offers to sell a cheap gold plated necklace (or bracelet or something) in a very nice box with a receipt from somewhere for a real one valued at several hundred dollars.

What I find interesting is that men seem to be more interested in the things possibly being stolen, and the women are more interested in personal safety.

This is a general observation, obviously, women still value their valuables, and men still value safety, but emphasis is observable.

Case in point, awhile back, I went to traffic school to expunge a ticket from my record. The instructor asked the class "how far behind a car should you stop at a traffic light/sign?" The men, to a tee, said "far enough behind the car so if someone rear-ends you, you won't get driven into the car in front of you." None of the other women even peeped up, until I said "far enough behind that you can still escape." All of a sudden, the other women chimed in and agreed emphatically.

I once attended a lecture by a security professional who made that exact point.

Actually, the first time I took defensive driving, the instructor said the same thing -- that way you can pull out of line if you see someone coming at it.
