  1. The difference, so far as I can tell, is that Israel is spending millions of dollars to protect citizens on both sides, whereas Hamas et al go to lengths to blend in and cause civilian causalties on both sides. Israeli develops smart bombs, Hamas focuses on quantity rather than quality. International law is fairly clear on the subject; it's fair game to go after your enemy when he uses human shields. It's his responsibility to protect the noncombatants in his territory. Of course it's in good taste to minimize the damage you cause when you attack an enemy that is hiding among noncombatants. On this count Israel has famously strayed, eg using 2000 lbs bombs in residential neighborhoods, area denial weapons, etc. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  2. I read reports about a study recently that showed expensive placebos were more effective than inexpensive ones. At least for pain medication at reducing the discomfort from electric shocks. Calls to mind a scene from ghostbusters
  3. Do you blame the pharmas for marketing or the witless consumers for buying in? My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?

  6. What support? All you need is a sewing machine and website. Or a laser cutter and a printing apparatus adapted from an existing clothing line Oh yeah, I forgot about the IT/HR/legal/marketing/customer support departments. 11. You could use a gui scripting tool to take the screenshots. Not the prettiest thing in the world but probably doable for less than $100. Couldn't you do all that in python these days? 12. +1 I rarely see bicyclists offering basic traffic courtesy, let alone following rules. Especially messengers, but ordinary looking people as well. As a pedestrian at least you can shift your stance and pretend you don't see them and they'll swerve at the last minute. Not much you can do if you're in an automobile...I've found they're immune to reason. A friend of mine died that way trying to cut off a truck. Not sure what she was thinking. 13. Why pretend? Citi to write down $17B in bad mortgages Bank of America to write down $5.2B in CDOs My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  14. By "geek the camera" do you mean the hand waving? I took that to be encouraging the floaters to release as it seemed to be at the same time that the plane was stalling and rolling. A little hard to tell since all you can see is a little bit of horizon. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  15. How about they let excess demand cause the grid to descend into undervoltage and ruin your appliances instead? I'd prefer a bidding system like ebay's auto bid system, but this seems like a step in the right direction. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. 18. I think there's a good chance that a $35000 house in Buffalo required more than its worth in maintenance in order to stay living there. Alternately, someone has to pay to demolish it and cart off the debris. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  19. I don't suppose this is really a surprise to anyone. http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071214/NEWS01/712140365/-1/CINCI http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_02/b4066046083770.htm Is is fair to hold lenders and lienholders responsible after foreclosure? 20. Why do you suppose jet man et al aren't using turboprops? Seems like a prop would be more efficient, even if tremendously dangerous. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  21. All the markets work that way. The prices you typically see quoted everywhere are the end of day figures. People who need to work with stock prices know not to rely on the end-of-day figures for all their needs. What strikes me as odd is the markets' need to operate on a diurnal cycle at all. It causes all kinds of oddities in trading like excesses of market-on-open and market-on-close orders etc that are plainly difficult to handle -- in order to achieve the capacity to process all the data at once and without delay, the market operators end up having to supply equipment that sits idle for most of the day. 22. QFT If it was that easy, companies would have raised prices and increased profits without waiting for Congress to act. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  23. Is there a limit to optimization? Could you ever imagine a time when automation & machines are able to keep up with or exceed people? If drilling for oil, or growing crops, &c could be 100% mechanized / cybernetic so that productivity gains were saturated & costs were essentially fully optimized down to supply/conversion of raw materials + other factors of production excluding labor... Would Marxism or state control of mechanized industry then be justifiable? My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  24. We don't deprive anyone of health care. You're depriving me of a Ferrari! My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  25. Oh I thought we were talking about the US... Hello, the US has had socialized meds for decades, and it's too expensive to maintain due to cost and demographic changes taking place and forecast to continue. What we don't have is universal health care coverage. Big difference. My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
