  1. "hand deployment system as BOC, to differentiate from rip cord types " So how would you classify ROL? HW
  2. Sounds like the ride on top of the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas. At least that one starts at about 1,500 AGL with a spectacular view. Whuffos I was with were terrified, and wondered how I could do "this." HW
  3. Does anyone except me wonder about someone making a five-way prior to the A-license check dive? Just curious. HW
  4. Cool, but why should I ever want to check the annoumcements forum again? HW
  5. It was remarkably informative and accurate, but a few quibbles are in order... Referring consistently to the pilot chute as the "drogue chute." Understandable for a tandem student. "It is common for the reserve chute to be packed by a certificated rigger." Better be more than common. The reserved is repacked every few months "to keep it from getting stiff." Interesting concept. "Folding" parachutes. Common wuffo term, in this case maybe used to avoid saying "packing" twice in the same sentence. Nonetheless, very positive. Wonder who reads this site. HW
  6. DTOXX started another thread, "Witnessed my first cutaway today." It was remarkably similar in circumstance -- two pre-A AFF grads jumping together -- and remarkably similar in response. I'm not convinced the responses constitute a learning experience. HW
  7. Stephanie is much better. Letterman rules. HW
  8. I suspect a troll here. ScottCargill is from Taft, CA, as is DToXX, who claimed to be off AFF and working with another similar jumper getting ready for their A. HW
  9. "The USPA would beable to answer this one better then me since I don't follow the laws." Err... does this mean you don't keep up with them or don't obey them? Or both? HW
  10. See also: www.drunkenbastards.org/hob/nipps/nippshob.html HW
  11. I don't think the Lake Erie incident, a one-shot, constitutes a "cloud waiver." The airplane in question was a B-25. It subsequently ended up at Turners Falls, MA, where the FAA wouldn't let it be used as a jump plane. It deteriorated there for several years and was sold. The ferry pilot, who hadn't flown anything bigger than a C150 since Korea, took it to nearby Orange, MA for touch and goes, got behind the power curve, flipped over and buried the nose 10 feet in the dirt. Sad end to sad story. HW
  12. The Announcements forum says there is a message posted: JanÊ18,Ê2038,Ê7:14ÊPM So every time I go by, it says there's a new message -- but there isn't.I tried Mark All Read but it didn't help. HW
  13. Don't f*k with me . I was an English major and reporter in an earlier life. I don't bother with spelling/grammar errors in posts in general; it would be a full time career of getting people pissed off at me. HW
  14. "tandemmaster? 5'2" tall? " Well, that does change the equation a bit. HW
  15. "Don't underwater welders get paid nicely though?" Given your interest in changing careers fairly frequently, by the time you got trained, served as a tender for a couple of years and then another couple as an apprentice, you might approach the very beginning of the big bucks range. What's wrong with winds in Hawaii? They're always coming over the Polo Club and as long as you know exactly where on the DZ not to land, you're golden. Alternative -- how's the rigger supply in HI? HW
  16. "A general hang out for skydivers and whuffos. Whether skydiving related or not, this is the place hang out. " Perhaps "the place TO hang out." HW
  17. "I bought an early version of the para-commander." I don't know what that might be. The PC obviously went through improvements after its introduction in (I think) 1962, but I don't think even an early PC would meet your description. Are you maybe thinking of a Crossbow? HW
  18. Underwater welding is dirty, cold, dangerous, pays shit, and forces you to live in places you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. (I know some.) How 'bout becoming a skydiving instructor? It's dangerous and pays shit, but at least you can live in some nice places. HW
  19. "They jokingly talked about skydiving as "Sport Death"." Often "translated" to "sporta morta." I think some of the early Carl Boenish films had footage of CG, including the large pile of jumpers on top of the Twin Beech. I've got lots of early reference materials, if you're ghoulish enough to want them. HW
  20. What is a "cleansing ritual?" Feel free to use your imagination
  21. "Uh, being a woman, I don't think I'd really want "been around" next to my name! " "Used goods?" HW
  22. "The famous Russian UT-15 which was actualy better then PC " Yup, at least for accuracy, and Pioneer copied it as the Russian PC. I have a couple of T shirts that have a picture of it, with "Parakommandr" in Cyrillic. I think I still have a UT-15 manual in Russian. HW
  23. I kinda wondered the same thing, so a couple of years ago when I was at Eloy, I wandered by. It's a municipal airport with a fence around it and maybe even a tower-- I forget. A *lot* of people went in there in its heyday; I think BSBD was invented there. Maybe the town got tired of that. HW
  24. "Veteran" and "Old Hand" might imply to the casual reader that the author has some expertise. How about "Been Around" and "Codger." HW
  25. "in certian areas of the US places have filed for cloud waivers. " I would be surprised if any DZ in the US has been issued a "cloud waiver." I can't imagine the FAA issuing one. Please inform if I'm wrong. HW
