  1. I hear it man. I got 10 jumps into my student training and dislocated my shoulder (due to on old injury that was exacerbated by jumping, not the sport itself)... Hurt myself in August, surgery in November, and still off of work right now until March. Wont be clear to return to jumping again until May. I spent the first part of my recovery sucking up all the information I could here, watching video, reading books & magazines... I finally made myself lay off for a while because not only was I teasing myself, I realied that no matter how much information I cram my head full of, it won't apply to me or *click* very much until I have the experience to compliment it. I totally Stewied out for a while there, then found other things to occupy my at-home time with.. Now that February is here it's hard to not think about it, but the next step in my progression definately involves gaining more experience. The good part is that not only has my lay-off given me a big reason to go to PT every session & do my excercises at home, but I've began to think more about what I eat, how I can stay fit, and even getting into a walking/jogging routine... All with the intention of being a better jumper in the spring. Sounds silly or even a little pathetic, but I've never had anything in my life that has motivated me to do these things before I discovered skydiving. I've read alot of your posts and can relate to most of them, probably this one the most.. Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.

  7. Come to Detroit, its like disneyland for this stuff.... http://www.forgottendetroit.com I've got some pictures buried on my hard drive, we used to do a lot of this stuff but I stopped because I don't need the legal trouble. We infiltrated an old theater in Detroit and I have several unused tickets to a Sly & the Family Stone show from 1974. My buddy explored the old Mowtown records HQ before they tore it down & he found some of Smokey Robinson's fan mail in a desk there. 11. Yeah dude, wait until you dislocate your shoulder on student jump #12, have surgery, and have to recover for 4 months. It's a blast Sorry, that was a soapbox I was standing on, and I really dont wish this on anyone. Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  12. Thanks to the original poster for editing the video as he did & posting this: I, as a student, am aware of burbles in reguards to my own, personal burble... But had never thought about the very large burble that occurs over a group in formation. Thanks for editing & posting, I for one learned something there. Thanks to Cassi who in spite of taking out the group in the video, was a mature enough person to acknowledge the error in public and more importantly learn from the experience. Don't beat yourself up... We all make mistakes in life, and the good ones are the ones that you learn from & llive to tell about. It sounds as if you've learned more than you thought you ever would on that jump, so don't keep yourself up at night over this one. It sounds liek you already made amends with the other jumpers. Again I'm still a baby in this sport but I learned alot both about the technical aspects of jumping, as well as the charachter of jumpers by reading this thread & watching the vid. happy holidays to you all Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  13. ummm i'll qualify this by saying I'm a union worker at my day job, and in general I support unions 150% and also, the dz I jump at does not have a 'dzo is king' mentality at it, so maybe i'm naieve because I've never experienced that at either of the two places i've jumped. but if you unionize some, but not all, of the dz workers you're going to funnel business away from the union joints if the 'customer' does not percieve an added value in going to the union shop over the non union. And, if you think it's hard to draw new people into the sport now, double the cost of AFF. Then double it again. Now you're getting close to the ballpark of what it would cost to pay for healthcare. The way I see it, skydiving is something that people do because they love it. they do not *need* the service, nor do many have much of a choice in where they can get it from. For the most part, if you can make a living in this sport, you are both very lucky and also paid in lots of intangibles, i.e. free jumping. again maybe i'm a naieve newbie here, but cost kept me away from this sport for over a year after my first tandem, even though I knew I most definately wanted to jump again. If it had cost me 2 x or 4x as much, i likely never would've started my student progression. just food for thought Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.

  15. I might go for that once I get out of California, but until I do, I'm not going for a compact car. Drivers out here are waaaaayy too nutty. I piss too many people off intentionally to drive a small car. When I get into the onramp lane while in stop and go traffic to keep people from rushing up to the front to cut in, I want to know that my vehicle will win in an accident. ONLY A YEAR AND A HALF TO GO!!! WOO HOO!!! well uhhh, I guess thats your answer then you dont have to piss people off & block traffic when you can lane split & skydive instead Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.

  18. *Have my rotator cuff surgery *Recover and complete physical therapy by April *Finish my A license *Understand safe canopy control *Save up for and purchase gear *Get in 50 jumps by mid July *Ride the bike to WFFC with my camping gear & newly purchased rig :-) *Not file bankruptcy when I return :-p Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  19. born & raised in the metro area, and I lived downtown for 5 years... there is an *awesome* indie/underground music scene here, if you're into that kind of thing. Something to do almost 7 nights a week, if you like going to bars & clubs & seeing live music. Downtown/cass corridor/medical center is a strange kind of place. 8a-5p it's all kinds of business types running around, then at 5pm, downtown pretty much shuts down except for the drinking establishments. There aren't many people that actually live in the downtown area, which can be good and bad. Bad if you want to walk to a grocery store (you're going to need a car here)... Good if you like the small town atmosphere in the big city. WSU area is lots of college kids & artists, woodbridge & corktown are also nice neighborhoods in the core city area. As much as I hate to say it, you will find pockets of livable areas outside the above, but not many all the way out to the city limits. Hamtramck, a city within the city of Detroit, is also worth checking out if you want to do the urban thing. I recently moved to the burbs (Hazel Park) because I got tired of the urban thing... It's nice to have a backyard and the house is nice, and the rent is way reasonable. people at these websites would love to do nothing more than talk your ear off about the city and answer any questions you might have: http://www.detroityes.com http://hotfudgedetroit.com Outdoorsy stuff? Yeah, there's some parks & such, but to get to any serious wilderness area you're talking multiple hours in a car... The metro area is very sprawled out, almost to the point where it is all burbs from Holly to Monroe and beyond. Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  20. all I can remember of my first jump was looking up at the wing, the sound of the prop wash going by my ears, then yelling ARCH THOUSAND TWO THOUSAND THREE THOUSAND FOUR THOUSAND FIVE THOUSAND, CHECK, CHECK, WOAAAAHHHHH Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  21. Gato, I'm just a student as well so you know, the grain of salt thing... I blew my 5 second delay the first two tries. I was rotating to the left due to bad body position & was also kind of rushing the count as well. I made one jump one weekend before the weather rolled in, and didn't have a chance to jump agaion for 2 weeks. While I was down, I made it a point every night as I was laying in bed, trying to fall asleep to visualize the entire process in real time, from the time the pilot yelled 'DOOR' to the time the canopy was over my head. By the time I went back to make attempt #3, I felt as if I had done the jump a hundred times and it all came very natural to me. Another thing that my instructor had me do to help solve my problem was to find my balance point for my reach & pull. He had me lean against a wall like i was in an arch, almost in a push-up type position holding my upper body up with both arms. Then I would push off the wall and do my reach & pull, and come to rest against the wall again with my left arm holding my body up and my right on the practaice ripcord. This was to show me that, at first, I wasn't in a naturally balanced position and therefore unstable in the air. once I practaiced that to the point where my 'reach' was centered and balanced every time, I found it easier. The visualization thing definately worked for me, as did finding my balance point. I'm still learning about this stuff and not trying to advise you, but I thought i'd share since it seems like theres not many out there still going thru the s/l method. 22. which begs the question, does your broker allow you to short sell these stocks? Scottrade doesn't allow shorts on any stocks below $5 Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  23. I've been getting them too I made a new filter in my outlook express that takes any message with the string "projected:" in it & throws it in the spam file All the ones I've been getting have "projected:" in them referring to the stock price. People with lots of money buy up cheap stocks, spread word about them to persuade others to buy them, and then dump them leaving the 'tip'-recievers holding the bag. This is just a new face on an old game. Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  24. .... and your just about to forward the images on to the police right?! heh this happened in the city of detroit. They would've laughed me right off the phone... Good judgement comes from experience, and most of that comes from bad judgement.
  25. I have a video of it too, but it's too large for youtube There was definately a 3-dimensional something hanging from the roof, and the arm is moving the spraycan around, but we concluded that it was a manequin with a motorized arm & the whole thing is a publicity stunt for what I woudl assume is a show going on in the art gallery. incredible scale, though...
