Personally, i think most of it is media hype. we have up to 24000 die annually of flu. current cdc guidelines say do not treat those between the ages of 3-65 unless they have a comorbid condition....such as asthma, diabetes, cardiac disease, respiratory disease or those who are immunocompromised. which means that the average joe who comes and sees me doesn't get tamiflu but symptomoatic management unless they have something on assessment that says to me "you need to do more." yes....people who are getting h1n1 are miserable.....yes the flu is miserable.....and honestly i wouldn't wish it upon my worse enemy. it varies on the year...i jumped more this last year than ever....but we are only open 6months a year so i travel in the winter months.... almost 200 jumps this year, 1st year was about 70, 2nd year was like 110 and last year was 101 (with me being out for 4months due to injury). at least in our area that has stopped for the most part - most offices are recognizing the disruption for patient flow - however, those drug reps also bring samples of medications that are handed out to patient's who can't afford them. Most of it, you're right. But that still doesn't mean that we can keep every single patient to the minute. Shit happens. If the front office is still accepting patients when we are slammed and overbooked, then they'll hear it from me first. exactly..in all instances stuff comes up...can't always be on time because of the "by the way doc, not only do i have this and that there is this other thing." here is a good example...patient was scheduled for a 15 min follow up regarding diabetes care -all of a sudden that patient has been dx with tuberculosis. talk about throwing a monkey wrench in your day - you do what you do best....take it in stride and handle every thing as efficiently as you can. i have been seeing the same doc for 30 years...he is always behind so i try to schedule for the first appt of the day or the one right when they come back from lunch. some of it is that they end up getting a patient that has some crisis (physical/emotional) it is rude to make the patient wait..... but i have been on both sides of the fence where i have waited 30 min for the patient to show up and they never do or they call and say....can i still come in? and this has nothing to do with the doc i married...he never keeps me waiting - DPH # 2 "I am not sure what you are suppose to do with that, but I don't think it is suppose to flop around like that." ~Skootz~ I have a strong regard for the rules.......doc!

Our plane is going down but I haven't heard of anyone from our dz going down......we were talking about coming out sometime this spring before bigbird comes back home.

I have never had one. However, now that I have taken a job in urgent care, I will be getting both H1N1 and the regular flu vaccine this year. Sucks to break my streak, but I cannot catch something from patients, and with 40-60 people per day, my odds of exposure are nearing 100%. interestingly enough....i saw a ton of flu-a/b last season and didn't get vaccinated. Never did come down with flu....but i do wash my hands like there is no tomorrow....so maybe that is the reason why. as for numbers...right now we are seeing a lot of flu in our area....so i figure, well, i will eventually get it due to the exposure risk so better make sure i am vaccinated this year. good morning sunshine!! while you drink your coffe i will drink my wine....and when you are still here i will crash for about 6 hours and then come back a much more sober person in need of coffee.....late shift does cause some difficulties with a normal sleep pattern.....but then again, normal is under rated.
