  1. Not all of them are closed...Jumptown in MA is open weekends for the most part. Got a nice Otter, too...
  2. Reminded me of a story I read about a guy with a fake eye having a hard opening which knocked his fake eye out so that he had it bouncing around in his goggles
  3. Yeah, that's frustrating. But think of it another way...you were 6 weeks since your last jump...that pretty much sets you back to the beginning in your skills. Its all pretty much new again. At least you haven't heard the bowling speech =)
  4. Yeah, thats how it was...the box can be put in a small area as it follows the shape of the helmet. I did the install in about an hour. Wasn't hard, tho it didn't come with mounting hardware. I picked up some nuts/bolts at the hardware store that worked fine. The box had three holes in it already drilled so I just had to drill the helmet after sighting it in.
  5. I looked at finding a way to disable the headphone jack within device manager so that the system wouldn't know the jack was even there, and therefore care that it was plugged up. You may want to check in Device Manager and disable some of the hardware that show up under sound or system devices. One of those may be the headphone jack. Its also possible that in Control Panel, your sound card may have its own applet, which may allow you to set the headphone/speakers to work all the time, or never, etc. My laptop (Dell 630m) doesn't do this. Or...maybe you could give your laptop a new sound card: http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=206&product=10702&nav=systemRequirements $49.99. External USB sound card. Buy/use at your own risk...I don't know if it'll work for sure.
  6. Just some more info... The cliff is "The Old Man on the Mountain", a New Hampshire landmark in the north country. This is a naturally formed rock ledge that, if viewed in a certain way, looked to be the profile of an old man, shown on the plate. Unfortunately this profile crumbled recently when the rock ledge finally gave way. "Live Free or Die" is a quote from General John Stark, a New Hampshire soldier in the American revolutionary war. The larger quote is "Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.". (NH residents are proud of this motto...ironically, license plates are made by inmates in prison.) Anyway...props to all you who live BASE.
  7. Sure...nothing wrong with a discreet feeding. First time I saw breast feeding was when a friend's mom whipped out a boob and began feeding their baby at their dinner table. Didn't scar me, but it was something that was confusing and I had no frame of reference for it...I'm not even sure I was old enough to know what boobs were for. My mom had a lot of questions to answer when I got home. ...think of the children! Not all parents want their kids exposed to such things, and not all kids are better off being exposed to it. Edited to add: Funny story...was driving home from work a few years ago and pulled off at a rest area to hit the mens room and grab a drink. On my way out, noticed a woman with a baby getting into a car, but the baby blanket fell on the ground. She was a ways away, so it took a bit to get to her. I stood by the driver's side window waiting until she saw me. Then I noticed that she was breastfeeding... And there I was, standing there in a pair of sunglasses sipping on a BK coke, watching her until she said something. I quickly told her that the blanket was there and I high-tailed it out of there.
  8. I bought a Rawa camera helmet without the camera box. I just passed a couple hundred jumps, got a briefing and some training, and an ok from an instructor to start jumping with a camera. I ordered the camera box and will install it this weekend. Anyway...Rawa dealer...www.aerostore.com was good and has been reliable in the three separate orders I have made with them. Call their number and they'll help answer any specific questions. I don't know if an optima will fit in there but I think it may, a neptune does I was told, so you can check the dimensions of the two devices and see. I do not use an audible (yet). There is a lot of padding over the ears, which cut down on airplane noise and will keep your head warm. The chin cup keeps the helmet on solid, and the excess chin clip stuff (whatever its called) is inside the cup, not exposed. It gives it a good clean look. As an interesting side benefit...it keeps face-flappage to a minimum As a person with wider cheeks than most, I like this "feature", LOL. I'm real happy with the quality. I haven't had to "test" it yet, and don't plan on it. Any rubs of the helmet against metal will scratch the paint, tho...probalby my only complaint. Helmet is black, tho, so it doesn't show.
  9. Thanks...I've reposted over there. thanks for the word about carbon fiber dust...I did not know that. Cheers
  10. Hey all, I originally posted this in Gear and Rigging, but a suggestion was to repost it here... The camera box for my Rawa helmet should come on Friday. I'll be doing the install and I haven't installed a camera box before. I don't know what kind of directions will come with it. Does anyone have recommendations/caveats/helpful hints? Thanks!

  13. Make sure they are north of legal, and make sure your friends and family don't have an issue with them. Do that and it should be all good, regardless of age.

  15. Yeah, I usually had to resort to hunting for food...
  16. Wait'll you try a 13k sunset load hop and pop
  17. I also have a dark blue/navy blue rig, and I went with red for the handles and the freefly pad on my PC. My thought was that if someone else was looking for the handles I wanted it to be easy to see, and I trust that they could figure out from my body position what was the right handle to pull first. I don't think the two handles being different colors will make that part easier or harder for them. Regarding EPs...the phat daddy handles are padded in such a way that you get the best grip from the hand on the same side. The reserve handle's padding is arranged to make it more "left handed" than right-handed (and the cutaway more right handed than left). Maybe this is how all padded handles are made, I dunno. So depending on how you do your EPs this may be a factor.
  18. This past weekend at a dropzone, an AFF student one jump away from being cleared for solo jumps stepped in as a Cessna pilot when the Otter could not return on time. He was not able to make his last jump, but flew many loads on the last official day of the season so that others could jump. He used to drop jumpers when he was building up his time. Thanks W! May heaps of good vibes fall your way.
  19. No problem...I'll get a couple pics in the next day or two and I'll give you appx measurements all filled up. It has one big pocket on the outside. Inside, the part that is along your back when wearing it is a zippered compartment with the zipper on the inside. This is only suitable for something like the rigs manual, or maybe the USPA SIM. Ironically...Odyssey's come with a CD, not a manual... It's a good size bag...I have an Odyssey J4.5 (190 main, 193 reserve) with all the articulation options and the spacer foam...the straps easily fold onto themselves and out of the way. I put the rig in so the pins are against my back, and the rig's straps are towards the front pocket of the backpack. My Rawa helmet (large, no camera box) goes between the shoulder straps of the rig. It should still fit once I get the box on it, but I'm not sure just yet. I do not keep my RW suit in there as I generally keep clothing in a duffel bag. I suspect I could get it in there below the helmet, so long as the grippers are arranged inside the rig's straps. My freefly pants fit in the front pocket along with log book, gloves, alti, etc. I personally feel its a good investment for $100. I can't compare it to other gear bags, simply due to ignorance of the other products on the market. I am glad I got it and feel it was money well spent.
  20. I got one with my Odyssey...it fits the rig, and has a large pocket on the outside that can fit your other equipment, camera, log book, gloves, packing mat, etc. Inside the bag along the side against your back is a large flat pocket suitable for your rig manual or other paperwork. Helmet fits in the main compartment with the rig. The shoulder straps are strong and padded. It also has a cloth handle along one of the long sides. The color, lettering, and striping matches your rig coloring. I'm glad I have it to keep everything in one place and contained.
  21. I was wondering why people go to the tunnel...for me, I went before I had my A to get better in freefall, and recently to get started with FF. Why do you go?
  22. I learned at Skydive New England...I'm sure they'll help plot a training program that makes sense for you, even if it deviates from their default program. They do have a tandem progression for students that merges into AFF, should you want something like that. It's about 1.5 hours from Boston (there are bunkhouses, tenting, food onsite, etc). When you are licensed they have free load organizers who will get you jumping with other people.
  23. This may also help you with your decision: http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/dualsq.pdf It also ties in with some other posts in this thread.
  24. To answer your question: I've heard good things about Jumptown and never any bad. Start by calling them. They are open on weekends through the winter, too...bundle up and jump!
