  1. One thing I add to water training that might help and this was tested and works great: Once in the water, and chest strap is undone, you can dive down and do a front flip under the water and come right out of your gear. Assuming you are a good swimmer. Good Luck
  2. I know this can of worms has been opened before, but it is a great question. I am a divemaster as well as teach the FJC. The difference is that Padi puts out the training and accepts the liability of its teachings. In skydiving, USPA offers an outline, but has yet to put it to video. I do know that several reputable individuals are working on what you suggest as we type....the problem I think will be in the liability/risk category.. Good Luck, obviously you are educating yourself which means you are on the right track.....blue skys
  3. Thank You, I want to clarify, this thread is extrememly important and all of the extra articles mentioned should be read. ALL DZ's can benefit from better documentation, not to mention it is the law. Again, unfortunately liability is and will always be an important part of our sport, therefore bringing up deficiencies can only help all parties involved, lets leave out names though. That is the purpose of threads. (Safety and TRAINING) Thanks Tom your article was informative.
  4. I have read all, and appreciate it as well as agree with you. I do not make a habit of speaking for other people or DZ's for that matter, but I do know all parties involved and will look into it further to make sure we are in compliance. And even if we are, it sounds like there is always room for improvement. It is not until something tragic happens, where this gets aired out in a court room, that you realize there might or might not be deficiences. Thank You. Not to mention before stones are thrown we should take long hard looks at our own procedures.
  5. As far as SLI, I jump there and it is not even close to being run that way. There is a certified rigger in the garage as well as one on site at all times. Four at the DZ that I know of. On top of that TI's, AFFI's, SLI's always keeping an eye on things. They are well within the guidelines set forth. Further, packing classes are given on a consistent basis where I have seen full time packers assisting Instructors with the class. I know because I have given many. I have also been involved with a good amount of brainstorming on proper procedues for student and tandem rigs. I feel the need to defend, but please dont judge a whole DZ based on one opinion. Thanks..
  6. Agreed, It is easier to channel fear into positive avenues. Practicing EP'S, checking gear, ETc. No Fear worries me.
  7. similiar to a rollercoaster doing a loop, the canopy would have to go into a dive and not only carry enough speed but not bleed it off as you pulled it upward. I think a canopy cant respond without losing significant speed. Not to mention there would be a good amount of G force, making it hard to complete at the top. Love to see it done some day.
  8. This sounds great although there is no longer a IE rating...
  9. Does the CD have the same authority as a IE for a verifying signature. I cant seem to get this answered. The USPA renewal forms only allow for a I/E signature. Is this because they have not caught up with it? I do know that IE's are no longer being issued by USPA. Any thoughts?
  10. I have jumped the 27 for two years now, absolutely correct with the slider make sure your center nose cells extend past the slider, this cures the bow tie..... good luck, have fun, be safe.... Note: be ready to fly with risers immediately.., stow slider prior to brake release... If you have HMA lines, stow neatly and do not 1/4 twist at each stow. Line twists, are an experience, hold on. PRACTICE HIGH!
  11. how do you have a c license with 1 jump.....???
  12. This has worked well for me; Arch, Reach, Legs Out, Throw..... Reach = is the left hand being extended. Legs out = is a slight staigtening of the legs for stability. This seems to work well when re-enforced. Throw = 90 degree perendicular smooth throw. Again, I have them saying this through very practice we do from dirt dives to harness training. Sometiomes I see them saying it in the air...
  13. Just a few things to keep in mind....'the intention of this video is to assist a new student in recognizing a specific malfunction. In class lecture will fill in the gaps on proper procedures, coupled with harness training, and positive re-enforcement. Again, this will NOT be played in its entirety, and only used to show a specific topic from the perspective of a skydiver. Further,,,,this is a work in progress so positive/negative feedback is welcomed, from all skydivers as well as AFFI's. NO EP's will be shown, Again, I just took a look at this and immediately recognized some positive and negative thoughts. It will be gone over thouroughly prior to using anything in a FJC, trust me...AFFI and all of it will not be used.....your comments will serve as good input.......Thanks
  14. Another important point is that their was a transition from PULL (ripcord)to Throw (pilot chute).....back when we had spring loaded pilot chutes in student rigs students were taught to pull and hold onto the ripcord. Unfortunately, when the student pulled the pilot chute and held on to it, it did not make for a fun AFF jump. I think "throw" is not only better terminology for a student now, but helped to eliminate or reduce students holding onto the pilot chute. Ged rid of it like a live grenade.... Hence, TM's for training tandems should instruct students to pull the ripcord and continue with a throwing motion so we do not form bad habits early, that aff's will have to break over the next several jumps.
  15. I know Skydive University and Skydive Tech have something in the works. You might want to contact Mauricio Galante..He is on the Skydive University web page under staff. I know him and he will be more than willing to assist.
  16. Thanks, a couple of our guys at the DZ are working on putting something together, I will distribut when it is done, to those that might want to use to assist teaching. I beleive a small part was just posted on skydiving movies. Just a beginning.
  17. Although, not much said on wether it is a safety issue...THats what I am looking for.
  18. OK then what is being used, plastic lamenated pics? Am I the only AFFI using a video to assist me? Just looking to improve my FJC.....
  19. Right from the boss's at sunpath... Well, this is technically not the correct configuration and this is not an approved modification. Some people do this, and we have seen this before. The down side is, that you are taking away the flexibilty of the rig and it can distort the rig from its original design parameters. If you would like to have the original config, you can send the rig to us and we can re install a new closing loop retainer in the correct location. Thanks Lee I appreciate the input..
  20. I have read most threads on this but I have a rigging question. I purchased a JAV NJ with a pull out. It wasnt until later, I realized the main closing loop was on the bottom flap with a washer and tape on the back of the cover holding it in place, and the material where it normally would come from was cut out. I have another JAV NJ with the closing loop coming from the bttom rear of the main container. I admit I like the bottom flap placement much better and would like to convert my other rig. Really it only involves removing the closing pin holder and placing the loop through the bottom flap. Question? Is this a common or accepted practice? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this transition. I will admit the rig closes beatifully and I have had no issues with it. Thanks in Advance.
  21. Those Instructors that do use a malfunction video in your FJC, I know not all do, what video are you using? Are there any student FJC friendly malfunction videos being used, and if so where can I get one? The one I was using is not bad but obviously outdated. Thank You.
  22. I witnessed exact same thing, but the new jumper decided to land the weird config by correcting the spin wioth opposite input all the way to landing.......When I inspected the rig the riser was caught under the flap with the warning label...NOTE the warning label is not on both so a quick pack job by a packer or someone not paying attention, could cause this malfunction.......be carefull ...
  23. I have seen 180 degree turns with tandems, and in my opinion it is a tragedy waiting to happen. Too many factors can come into play. If you desire to risk your safety thats one thing but why the safety of a third party, who if told would probably say no way....traditional patterns even with smaller tandem canopies are always recommended. Remember how risky the jump can be in general why add to the risk factor. When given the chance Murphy will join you on the jump....at no extra fee.
  24. I hope you do not mean with a student attached to you? Attempt to go unstable,,,,maybe with a examiner or qualified skydiver, but do not attempt to learn at the expense of the students safety, who I believe would decline if he knew what were going on. unless I misunderstood. If so elaborate a bit?
