  1. I guess I am not signed up for this...I get the other email from them. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  2. Billy, Waverly is now showing up as Music City Skydiving...they have a facebook page. Is that still Cary and company or someone new? Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  3. So sorry to hear this! Bob also was involved in a lot of early skydiving TV shows. I loved to hear his stories. Blue Skies Bob! Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  4. Sometimes the students would like to be acknowledged for what they consider a great accomplishment, not to mention, it lets all the coaches know there are new people that need a coach and would come and introduce themselves to the new graduate. In a perfect world it would be great to have the staff to make sure every unlicensed jumper had a coach, but this is not a perfect world. It gripes me to no end, when the seasoned skydiver/instructor doesn't remember what it felt like to graduate and the confidence it give them and instead belittle or look down upon the new students. I see no harm in introducing this new AFF graduates to the dropzone over the PA. We do 7 level AFF instructions. We have coaches for the student to jump with after they pass all those 7 levels. We also announce the A license over the PA too. If you don't like to acknowledge the students progression publicly, then don't do it. 5. I am leaving early for the weekend, but call me at the office next week. (800) 435-1975 I initiated some changes a while back to the SIM glossary (and I think to some specific areas of the SIM) regarding this terminology and what it means. It is always good to discuss things like this once in a while. Anyone else reading this, please check out the definitions and usage in the SIM and discuss it here. It is always good to get a number of opinions from experienced instructors about how this kind of thing is being applied in the field. Note: There is a definition for "self-supervision" too. I'm gonna write "Gary said" instead of self supervision. LOL Good to see you and jump with you Gary! Judy. Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  6. Technically, the meeting was adjourned immediately because we lacked 10% of the membership. They just had Ed Scott do his presentation regarding membership numbers and financial information. Sorry I did not include this in the original post. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  7. Jan, Gary, Jay Stokes, Larry Hill, Mike Mullins, Todd Spillers and many others were very attentive during the meeting. The playing on the phone is a major pet peeve of mine. It may not bother most people as much as it bothers me. j Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  8. Kirk Verner didn't even try to hide it. Rich Winstock kept it under the table but there is no table skirt so it was very obvious, especially when he started texting Tony Thatcher across the room. A few others checked there phones a time or 2 but appeared to be less than 15 seconds. When I got to the hotel I ask sherry butcher where the meeting was and she sent me off on a wild goose chase. A few napped through the meeting. Some dosed off for 20 seconds and a few slept for at least 20 minutes. It was so disappointing watching all this. How can they expect us respect them and their rules when they don't give a crap about about the members. Many said after the meeting that no one showed up, yet there I stood...apparently I a no one as far as they are concerned. There were about 7 members there. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  9. Just what boat is Rich Winstock in???? Ya see, that could be the "Love Boat," or The "Black Pearl!" What an ignorant topic IMHO. So quick to persecute, but not interested in finding out the facts, or the truth of the matter. Why don't you just "Stay High?" & "Go Away?" WA,AH.
  10. 1. True, but the don't have to respond. 2. It has been brought up several times in this thread - why should several hundred people go begging one at a time hat in hand to get answers. I don't really have a dog in this fight. I don't know enough about the incident to form an opinion. The lack of communication about the incident is disturbing though. My point of wanting more transparency in this little organization. I probably will be at the General Membership meeting, but they still won't tell me anything that I don't already know or the facts on things we want to know. j Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  11. I guess I don't understand that statement. The facts in this incident have been pretty widely reported and confirmed by the Co-DZO. Knowing what disciplinary action does or foes not occur wouldn't provide you with anything that you don't already know. Did I miss something? No, you didn't miss something, I was just thinking in a "going forward" idea. Not just this incident. j Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  12. I have to agree about Halcyon as far as size...but they had a great sushi place there we went to one night. We didn't have any locals at Grande selling us anything, in fact, the only "vendors" that were there were not allowed, but just hung out over by the dock at the edge of the property. We stayed in one of the swim up rooms so we were not in the "main" building. La Toc looked beautiful from the ocean when we drove by on our way to the scuba sights. 13. OMG! YES! We went to the St Lucia Grande last year and loved it and going again this winter. We normally had gone to Sandal MoBay for years, but decided to try a new place with our free week. The only bad thing was the ride from airport to the resort. Int'l airport on one end of the island, resort on other. Very windy hilly road...21 miles took about 1 1/2 hours, but its worth it. LOVED the scuba diving there too! I attached a picture of one of the places we scuba dive. If you go have a great time! 14. Thank you topdocker. I was just thinking in a "going forward" type deal. We are never going to hear Sherry's reasoning or even Rich's side of this incident. When someone is disciplined, its closed door meetings. I want to know who might be a danger to me in the sky and on the ground. Not saying people don't learn from their mistakes because many do but many do not so I think we, as jumpers, should have access to information about unsafe jumpers for our own safety. j Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  15. JFISH - this response is not directed at you... I think we are asking the USPA for the wrong things. We want transparency, correct? but according to the bi-laws they have a bunch of confidentiality crap in them, so we can only go off rumors and what is posted here, because they won't/can't share with the rest of the USPA members. They (some of the BOD's, not all) think DZ.com is a joke, but they don't/can't give us any information to defuse the rumors and all the stuff they think is "crap" on dz.com. I may be completely off base, but if the board wants to shut us up they have the ability to do that by changing their way and bi-laws. We will never agree with everything they do, but it sure would be nice to be able to really support an organization that is more transparent. If people don't like their bad behavior being aired in the skydiving community then they should just not act that way. Not that all mistakes/accidents are on purpose. People who are arrested are publicly listed even before they are convicted. Why can't this little organization do the same? Why can't we have a better way to communicate with them, without EVERYONE having to call/write and ask the same questions. J Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  16. I spoke with a board member...I was told that in the "investigation" that people at the DZ said he wasn't swooping but landed short. I asked what the hell is he flying over a spectator area for anyway? Sounds like Butcher and the rest of Rich's buddies are going to debate the meaning to the word "it". J Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  17. Not saying you did, not saying you didn't, but is it possible you had a "I did some research and I already know that attitude"? Where did you get your "research"? I have seen it, as I am sure other instructor have, you get the know-it-all student. They are the most dangerous because they don't/won't listen to what you have to share with them. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  18. Probably not the one you were talking about. I was reserve side (several years ago) and the main side had a camera, but the pilot chute got hooked on the eye piece, not the camera. Main side JM looked up and it cleared. Student saw the whole thing....didn't freak just kept a good body position. Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  19. Can anyone actually say they give a flying bag of shit about this? I do. I like NASCAR and I like Travis Pastrana - he makes me laugh. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  20. Actually, there are driving experiences where you can pay to drive a stock car around the track for a few laps at Talladega or any other big track up to 175mph. It's on my bucket list. Hey Billy, Chris and I have driven several times with the Dale Jarrett Racing Experience and they are the best. I've done a few other schools and one was just down right scarey. My top speed so far at Talladega was 183. Driving again on the 19th. Judy Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  21. Billy The crowd in the infield, on pit road. Obviously the race had not started yet because the cars were parked on pit road, where many many people were. j Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  22. I was kinda hoping for Keslowski's car....he probably wouldn't have made it out alive if he hit Jr.'s. J Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  23. Never mind, they just showed it again and the offending jumper. Nice. J Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  24. Just wondering who and or why they hit Kevin Harvicks car with the flag weight? He isn't my favorite driver, but those cars cost about $300,000. Does the USPA pay for this? J Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  25. Don is a great guy, unfortunately some scum sucking attorneys stole from him, but that is typical for that profession don't you think. But seriously, you can make a FORTUNE flying jumpers. The cost of av gas/jet fuel is super cheap and the planes rarely break. Don't believe all the hype from a airlines that the price keeps climbing...that's just what they want the general pubic to believe to justify the fare hikes. Answers to other skydiving questions you might have: The reason we don't jump through or fly threw clouds is because of the lack of oxygen. It starves the engines and they will seize up not to mention we have to absorb oxygen through our skin since we can't breath in freefall. When we deploy the parachute we actually go back up about 500 ft. Mullins just shuts off the airplane and lets it drop until about 1000 ft and restarts the engines....the observer riders really freak out when he does that, but is saves on fuel. Anything else, I can help you out with, feel free to PM me. j Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
