  1. Aaaand no source, just quotes. Whoever wrote that made an assumption about wisdom. If indeed the data supports a shift in views over life span, it could just as easily be attributed to the natural greed people start to feel as they age and their relevance declines in the world.
  2. Another pithy saying which has no basis in reality other than that conservatives love to tell everyone how smart they think they are.
  3. I loved it when I finally saw it but I was a toddler when it came out. I only found out about it because I live a few miles from Mori point where Harold sent the Jag hearse over the cliff into the pacific. Definitely a different movie than what you would have seen in the 50s
  4. Thankfully this was balanced out in the 70s with Harold and Maude.
  5. Now that would be a fun mission. I’m assuming 55 km would be well above the sulphuric acid clouds. It sounds like you’d need a rockoon setup to be able to leave. Maybe to rendezvous with a waiting starship to get you back to earth. At least aero braking into Venus orbit should be easy enough. Musk should totally be working on this but instead he’s solving problems on earth like whatever he thinks is wrong with Twitter.
  6. If Belarusian troops cross the border they will feel some pain. I can’t imagine they would be any better supported logistically than Russian troops if they made that move. I’m pretty sure the Ukrainians are aware of any threat from the north and are prepared to repel it. For now the majority of Russian ground efforts seem to be centered around Bakhmut. It’s not entirely clear why they are focused on that area. At any rate, the ground in Ukraine will soon freeze and allow mechanized movement. I expect we’ll see some changes in battle lines after that.
  7. I miss the days when this was how involved he was. I’d forgive every bit of the Twitter acquisition bullshit if he did a starship factory tour like this today.
  8. Very interesting and thorough video. I’m not surprised that Mars orbit rendezvous is the most efficient way to do it, just as lunar orbit rendezvous was for Apollo missions back in the day. That was the only way we could get each of them done with just one Saturn V at a time. I really wish Musk was more focused on this right now.
  9. Patriot systems may soon be on the way. Almost makes it seem like Ukraine is already part of NATO. https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/13/politics/us-patriot-missile-defense-system-ukraine/index.html
  10. Orion’s coming home. Looks like reentry will be just after noon EST. I hope it’s a sweet skydive. I wonder if it will beat Apollo 10’s record of 24,816 mph / 39,705 kph. If you’re in the US you should watch because you helped pay 20 billion for it. Is Artemis worth it? We’ll probably spend more than 20 billion over the holidays but the program will likely end up costing 5 times that over the next decade. I’m glad we at least did something worthwhile with our leftover shuttle engines. Still, it would probably be cheaper for NASA to just buy Twitter. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/10/science/nasa-orion-splashdown-when.html https://www.space.com/artemis-1-orion-spacecraft-splashdown-what-time https://www.voanews.com/amp/despite-cost-overruns-and-delays-nasa-hopes-to-launch-artemis-1-this-year-/6746292.html
  11. 37 bucks in California to fill up the Prius for another two weeks but cheese prices won’t budge. Thanks Biden.
  12. Absolutely cool story. As a guy who’s worked with metal most of his life and also been to A&P school I definitely appreciate the 50 cal belly gun mod on that bird. The restoration plan looks challenging but well thought out. Looks like they’ll get the cockpit section set up as a static display until more restoration is completed. Canadian military expertise has never been in doubt in my mind after learning about the avro arrow program. Sorry we screwed you guys over on that one.
  13. You beat Slim King to it
  14. He’s a failure at that too. He couldn’t even keep gas prices up.
  15. I think more specifically that their approach now is to eliminate checks on both state and federal branches of government that they control. It’s straight out of the dictator’s handbook if there ever was one. First take control of the courts, get them to rule in favor of your party, then take control of the voting. What I find most alarming is that this ruling could potentially allow the overturning of voter referendum approved systems that are already in place in some states. If that happens you can kiss any hope of ranked choice voting goodbye.
  16. I subscribe to that commie online rag the Atlantic, and she references this article which I happened to catch back in October. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/10/moore-v-harper-independent-legislature-theory-supreme-court/671625/
  17. Anyone on here following this? I’m surprised there isn’t a topic yet. The outcome of this decision will likely have a dramatic effect on future federal elections. Being a working stiff I only managed to catch some c-span reruns of oral arguments today plus read an article or two. https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/policy-and-politics/2022/12/7/23498507/supreme-court-moore-harper-amy-coney-barrett-democracy-voting-rights-north-carolina https://amp.charlotteobserver.com/opinion/article269737826.html
  18. The era didn’t technically end. Some small dinosaurs survived and evolved into birds that are still with us today. Tablesaws survived as well and have evolved into many different varieties.
  19. So now 51-49 in the senate but a thin republican majority in the house, They seem a bit divided at the moment as to who should eventually become speaker. We haven’t seen that in a while. At any rate, I say ‘tis but a flesh wound.
  20. So, third in line to get his old job back.
  21. What you imagine might have happened should be easy enough to prove if it occurred. I have to ask though, why the photos of candidates for Arizona governor? How do they support what you seem to imply about Arizona election integrity?
  22. I’ll ask you again, is the bully forced to attack the little kid?
  23. I’d be curious to see him lay it all out.
  24. I’ll ask you again, has Russia been forced to attack Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure?
  25. They didn’t have success so much as DeSantis did. The republican majority in the house wouldn’t exist without redistricting. Three seats were gained through DeSantis’ map in Florida alone. With the advantage he helped hand to them republicans should have picked up many more seats. Perhaps if they’d had a plan to move the nation forward in any way other than toward exacting revenge against President Biden and the democrats they might have.
