USPA Poll on tunnel time replacing some freefall time for AFFIs
dorbie replied to dorbie's topic in Instructors
The objection is not about making it easier. It is great that tunnel time will make it easier for potential AFFIs complete their real skydives and accumulate real freefall time as they work towards becoming seasoned skydivers. This can't happen in a tunnel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcL9kem_BDo Nor this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS_WNJN2Dqg Nor this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o448aNREbD0 There's something to be said for jumping enough and screwing up enough before you throw a student in the mix. -

Thanks for your response, I liked it except the part I quoted. Who is bashing the directors? The BoD is elected, it is absolutely 100% appropriate to raise issues of their support for an issue like this and it is up to them to take a public stance on it if they choose to. Nobody on the BoD is owed an apology, they hold a public leadership position and public comments on BoD actions either on any support for this issue or on issuing this poll are absolutely fine. I don't think this poll even passes the smell test, but that's my opinion. -

There's a lot more than canopy time and RW acquired in 150 jumps. It's added seasoning for want of a better word. It's such an unnecessary proposal for so many reasons. -

+1 2 hours of tunnel time is not equivalent to a single skydive in many respects. -

I am willing to bet that the guys doing those jumps had more than two hours of tunnel time. Yup, probably hundrds or even thousands of hours, it's certainly not a 1:1 trade. But we're talking about an extra 150 skydives. Does an AFFI hopeful complaining about waiting another 150 jumps really have the right stuff? -

Now THAT is a great idea, not the resigning but let's hear which board members if are supporting this and we can do something about it next election cycle. -

Now there's an interesting point. I anticipate a lot of hemming and hawing from the tunnel wunderkind. -

Me too, not that I have a dog in the hunt. The most bizarre thing is that anyone is floating this for a mere 2 hours of freefall time. Where are the skydivers with 4 hours freefall time who are pushing to be AFFIs? The whole thing is kinda strange? -

I just got an email notice of a poll asking about this. It seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. It just makes no sense. Are there really wunderkind waiting to become AFFIs who don't have enough freefall time to qualify? 6 hours is not a lot, that's less than 500 jumps. If so, may I humbly suggest that you just jump more instead of trying to count your tunnel hours. Is this in pursuit of a hidden agenda like laying the groundwork to get tunnel rats graduated to AFFIs that little bit earlier? The more I think about it the less suitable tunnels seem considering you never dive to catch anyone low in the tunnel or try to close more than a few feet. There' s no high speed backsliding or whip-lashing formations. -
It's efficient and cost effective for most students but why mandatory? Some schools do this, but others don't have wind tunnels within hundreds of miles. Making this mandatory is a pretty thoughtless and unnecessary suggestion. And some students do just fine without it too.

1st time tandem landing, broken ankle, would solo landing be easier?
dorbie replied to bochen280's topic in Tandem Skydiving
For a student injured on his first tandem his attitude is pretty good I'd say. -
Are you talking about students or swoopers?
-
Surely you can't be serious? How about a 4-way that forgot to pull: http://www.skypole.ru/SouthPole/SPEX/HTMLs/sp_accid.html Or this video of a 2-way where one forgot and the only reason the other pulled creating a 2 out was he saw the AAD deployment of his buddy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX9qVLTD4Xo

The biggest problem with the "stupid" theory is it implies that it can never happen to someone as smart as the poster, making it just that little bit more likely that it will. Strolling into a propeller can happen to you, it's not a function of intelligence. This isn't FAILblog where everyone else is an idiot. If you want to learn to be safer then consider yourself human with human failings who could be next in line for a write-up here in incidents (or safety and training).

IMO you aren't, maybe thats what the DZ told you to make you feel good about your tandem. Yes, you made a skydive, not a skydiver. You're welcome to your opinion, whatever makes you feel special dude. My first jump wasn't a tandem, in response to your questions I have my USPA C license and English is my first language. If you make a skydive you're a skydiver in my opinion.
-
As soon as you exit on your first tandem you're a skydiver.

It says he got his reserve out but it was a ball of crap, that could mean anything. This is another miracle Mike story without video.

Good to hear don't ever want to see any one get hurt. Agreed, having said that I'll take August 2014. You're directing your emoticon at the wrong guy if you hope to affect the outcome, not that he'll listen.

Yes, looks like there was a white balloon on the left and a black balloon on the right set up as a kind of target gate. Looks like he made the gate.

Tea-bagging is humiliating BECAUSE it is sexual in nature. This cretin attempted to sexually humiliate the victim, now he will face the music for that.

Low pull + CYPRES fire + near miss with tree.
dorbie replied to labrys's topic in Safety and Training
Camera was not an issue with that jump, but what next? that could apply to anything... what next what next? why are we skydiving... seems like your chute might not open next... what if the world ended..... Why do you have such a negative attatude, He landed safely and learned from it.... that is what really counts... If we all could take one thing away from this too would be awesome... +1 And had the willingness to share the video for all to learn by. Let's remember she got her reserve out and saved herself, the AAD fired during the deployment. The only reason we're viewing this is the uploader acknowledged and shared their incident. Bashing or bringing your own baggage will just mean fewer uploads to learn from in future. -
I just noticed a horrible pattern in my last six relationships...
