  1. In most free nations when a government tries to move in the direction of strong restrictions on abortion rights it stirs up a hornets nest of angry reaction. When Roe V Wade ruled the land freedom loving people were slack and unmotivated. This will soon change.

Maybe. But FOX announcers seem pretty dramatic. The whole right wing media circus focuses on drama. I will give you that blaming every single weather event on CO2 is getting tiresome.

Huh? Most of the right wing is barely literate.

Yes. And for better or worse it is my belief that his bluff will be called before the end of this year.

Hitler did not have 1500 nuclear weapons ready to go at any time with a stockpile of 3500 more. Unfortunately the parallel is not that good.

The defense and state departments along with the political leadership seem to be on different pages here. There is a battle brewing I think.

Yeah sure, that will last for a few weeks maybe.
  10. The cancelled pipeline from the Canadian tar sands to the Oklahoma distribution hub was designed to reduce the total cost of production and increase the profit from there. Any oil produced there that can not be moved by pipelines will be moved by rail at higher cost. Production and capital costs for this oil are quite high. But there are huge reserves there that can be called on if needed. But first long term price stability must happen.

Ground launched missiles are essentially artillery.

Even if it was possible to enforce a no fly zone it would hardly matter. Russia is not bombarding from aircraft. This is a ground war with missiles and artillery.

This is the beginning of some kind of war with Russia. Something more than cold war 2.0 but hopefully less than WWIII. Either that or the Russians replace Putin and settle. These are interesting times.
  16. China is heavily dependant on energy imports. I'm sure they will use any tools that they can. The best economic lever they could deploy would seem to me to be reducing their reliance through renewable sources.

This is what I believe will happen. But slowly in stages ratcheting up the pressure on Putin. He has crossed the Rubicon now.

That is exactly what is happening. Large quantities. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/03/04/ukraine-funneling-weapons-military-aid-00014189#:~:text=The weapons deliveries — missiles%2C small, locations along the front lines.

Judging by the reaction so far to the current events I feel fairly certain that Putin will have to assume we would honour the treaty. Or at the very least he would have to consider it possible. He had no real reason to think we would defend Ukraine, and he was only partly correct. Invading NATO countries is not something he could even contemplate unless somehow Russia were to become much more powerful that it is now, or the west much weaker.
  21. gowlerk

    Ukraine

Jerry, they are all full members of NATO. The treaty would obligate us all to defend them. And we would.

    Ukraine

Yes, for some reason there seems to be a line there. It is not seen as an act of war to supply Ukraine with deadly hardware. I guess it is all a matter of how we think the Russians will react. We believe that if we shoot at them they may go ballistic. Literally. It is not impossible that they may do so anyway. May you live in interesting times.
  23. Many women's professional basketball players decide to play in Russia during the WNBA's offseason for a chance to compete and take advantage of the high salaries overseas teams offer. Griner has made as much as $1.5 million a year in Russia, while she had a base salary of $215,000 last season for the Mercury. It is hard not to think that this woman pretty much deserves whatever happens now. The rest of the world is shunning greed and she is embracing it.
  24. Yes, after the invasion started Trump was quick to let the world know that "he is sure there are good people on both sides". But seriously, even the orange demon has sniffed the wind and called for mad dog Vlad to back down. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/596484-trump-calls-the-russian-invasion-a-holocaust-urges-russia-to-stop
