From as far as I can tell, Mike, it's not a legal requirement, rather more a personal preference. It stems from when women were considered their husband's property - and thus took their name. Once that issue was cleared up, women still took their husband's name because of the legalities involved (i.e. married tax returns, children, et cetera). However, some women, especially in the last 30 years or so (since the feminist movement, at least), women retain their maiden name as a sort of status indicator - it's a subtle way to remind people that they are their own person, and have also joined up with a husband as a team. For those who insist on it, to me it seems more of the feminist movement issue rather than anything else. Also, keep in mind that some women achieve educational goals, i.e. doctorates and masters, and those were awarded in their maiden name. It's a pain in the ass to change their degrees into their maiden name (if it can be done), and so some women retain their maiden name for this reason. That was the case with one of my professors - she was born Liang, married to Chen, and is listed as Liang on her degrees. She goes by Chen, but is listed in the college directory and catalog as Liang. I don't know if this answers your question, and I also don't know if the information is absolutely accurate; but that's my take on things, from both experience and a woman's POV. And I couldn't figure out how they'd've gotten ahold of my email address...except for the fact that for Christmas I used the 'net to buy some stuff for Dad on the 'net, and my email address was needed on those sites... I just received an odd email from BofA, where I don't bank and don't have a credit card. "Dear Customer, We have encountered an error in our attempt to create your monthly bank account statement for the credit card you have with us. We have strong reasons to believe that you changed your registration information or that someone else has unauthorized access to your account. Please use the link below to update your information that you have on file with your Bank of America account. Once you have updated your account details your session will not be interrupted and will continue as normal. Failure to update will result in cancellation of service, Terms of Service (TOS) violations or future billing problems." At first I thought it was phishing...and then I clicked the link. It took me to what appeared to be the corporate website for the bank, and when I googled the bank's website, the same link appeared. I sent them an email to their "abuse" line, and got the typical "we'll look into it" response. I asked them to verify that this is a real issue, as my father does have a credit card that we used over the holidays for a few internet purchases, which is the ***only*** way they'd have this email on file. However, they don't address my father, and they don't indicate which account, or give any information that I can track back and handle. I've asked for clarification from the bank, but am not sure what to make of this. If there is a problem, I need to get my Dad onto it ASAP. If it's not a problem, then there's no worries... Not sure what to do...any ideas? Dad does not understand the internet, and to alarm him unnecessarily would be not good. So I'm not exactly sure what to do. Help...and thanks. You couldn't be talking to me - I'm no philosopher. But I wonder how you prove the existence of anything once it's out of your sight. And then again, how do you prove you've actually seen it? Should your impressions actually be trusted? What if you take measurements? Does that make it real? What is real? Is it all an illusion, or is it concrete? And how far does illusion actually creep into reality? Is it black, white, or shades of grey? And does illusion shape our perceptions of what really is real? My head hurts. I did it...at close to twice your age, and a much longer break (something like 21 years...). If I can do it, darling girl, you can, too. God love you, Fonz....but I can barely make it through Chemistry for Dummies! Imagination I've got; I don't have the math skills. That's where I'm ignorant in - math skills. If there were a course which didn't involve lots and lots of incomprehensible math, then I'd take it in a heartbeat...but I haven't found Quantum Physics for Dummies yet.

If I knew that Gore practiced what he preaches, and also used jet planes to do the traveling needed, then I'd be far less inclined to consider him hypocritical. Since he doesn't have solar, doesn't use wind, et cetera, I tend to view him as typical of politicians - telling us one thing and doing another. Pity, that. He had a great chance. How about $75 in cash to her, and then an envelope to the teacher with some additional money so that if there are side trips or restaurants and she runs out of $$, the teacher will have the reserve cash? Also, I think instead of a phone for a month, don't they have prepaid cell phones? Get one of those, load it up with something like 100 minutes, and you're set. I rent, so whatever I have to get done usually isn't big or problematic (big stuff is the landlord's responsibility). However, it can be annoying. I am absolutely the worst when it comes to home repair, even the minor stuff (although I've gotten the hang of changing lightbulbs...). I don't have the first clue about what to do - but I do have some dear friends who do. So when they have occasion to come over, I usually have a "pretend Honey-Do" list...and my stuff gets done.
