I was having more than a bit of trouble too. Eventually I formated 2 partitions on my new hard drive (from my wife for fathers day) and installed Ubuntu on the larger of the two with the smaller as a swap file. Only took 10 gig for the both of them..... now when I boot the computer, i hit the bios and tell it to boot from that drive, and there is Ubuntu all by itself. Works good!!! New toys for free!!! About 8 years ago now... I had some "mystery steaks." My neighbor bought some "steaks" from a guy that came into his store to sell them. He ate one.... was concerned.... He gave me one, I cooked it and ate it.... more concern. We discussed.... He said he didn't want them so he gave them to me. I'm like sweet!!! Free "steaks." I ate the rest over that next week or so. I agree with all advice above.. and would like to ad a few Firefox.... yes! CCCleaner.... yes!!! Or, switch the old computer to linux!!! You may also try Spybot S&D for spyware, and Yahoo has a good anti-spy tool in the tool bar as well. Go through the MSConfig, selective start up...
