    2017 Eclipse

This isn't political, but here is a screen capture of a post my friend in Scottsdale, AZ made tonight on Facebook. The state of science education in one sentence... (Incidentally, her child is 14)
  2. Thanks. I'd forgotten about him.
  3. No. http://www.snopes.com/tainted-buffet-cause-severe-diarrhea-strip-club/
  4. I was wondering about that. There was a chart of Senators' voting ideology scores in an NYT article that puts Flake in a group of 5 on the furthest right (along with Cruz and Paul) with clear daylight between them and the main Republican block. This conservative is already slamming Flake as a result of his comments by claiming his voting record proves he is not sufficiently Republican. Wendy was correct. It didn't take long. "His Conservative Review Liberty score is an abysmal 53%, also known as an 'F'" source: https://twitter.com/BrentBozell/status/892477946082062336/photo/1 ETA: Here is a slightly broader but still thumbnailed review by the conservative leaning Arizona Republic newspaper - http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/arizona/2017/08/02/jeff-flake-book-reelection-campaign/527657001/
  5. Let's just keep them out of the military. We need warriors not emotionally disturbed, gender confused victims in the ranks. The weakest justification, yet similar rationale for refusing people who are "different" from enjoying the liberty to serve and protect their country. http://www.pbs.org/thewar/at_war_democracy_japanese_american.htm http://www.pbs.org/thewar/at_war_democracy_african_american.htm http://www.pbs.org/thewar/at_war_democracy_latino.htm

I happened to catch his Senate address on my car radio. Your take on McCain's speech differs from mine. You can watch/listen to it in full without interruption here: http://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2017/07/25/mccain-returns-to-senate-floor-full-remarks.cnn If you prefer, his entire speech converted to text is here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/07/25/full-text-john-mccains-senate-floor-speech/509799001/
  7. Yes, the Holy Spirit is in all of us. Right now She is in me and telling me that you're full of right wing shit! Darn it Ken, there goes another motherboard. And a waste of single-malt. 😆
  8. A military (Canadian) acquaintance of mine said, "We send armies to defend our country, our democracy and our rights. This is for every citizen. If we take those rights away from even one person, we cheapen all that we fight and die for."
  9. The initial civil action against (Canadian) Khadr was pressed and adjudicated in the USA. Yet US federal law pre-empted another Canadian (me) from pursuing legal remedy against your government from within my country. Double-standards are wonderful when they favour only you. We send young soldiers to promote and defend our cherished democracies. Sometimes soldiers die. Respectfully, give your head a shake, 'cause... 'Murica, fuck yeah!
  10. Widow of U.S. Sgt. Chris Speer launched attempt at asset freeze. Justice Edward Belobaba said the request for an injunction from the widow of an American soldier killed in Afghanistan was “extraordinary” and the decision to reject it was not difficult in law. source: http://www.macleans.ca/news/effort-to-freeze-khadr-money-dismissed-by-judge/
  11. IMO, if the settlement reveals terms such as you suggest, the debate up here would be substantially less heated.
  12. As the subject line is specifically Omar Khadr, remember that his nationality (and passport) of birth are Canadian. He was born & raised in Toronto. To avoid any potential misconception, I'm not not defending the guy. I just don't want facts accidentally massaged. The settlement arose from the actions of the previous government and adjudicated by the Supreme Court to be unlawful on a number of counts. As much as many Canadians are apoplectic about the money and the apology, to quote a friend of mine yesterday... "Do people really believe the Supreme Court makes its decisions at Wing Night?"
  13. A minor correction if I may; at the time of the incident, Khadr was 15 years of age.
  14. Here's more thorough background than Rob was able to supply in his OP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Khadr The Supreme Court of Canada ruled/upheld that Khadr's rights were violated by the Canadian government and that the government had acted illegally: (shortcut to the applicable section) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omar_Khadr#Canadian_documentation It is intellectually lazy to conflate Khadr's crime with the denial of his charter rights by the government of the day. They are distinctly separate issues.

    Canada Day, eh.

Canadians make up 0.48% of the global population. To the other 7 billion of you... we're sorry. Today we celebrate our 150th year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMiFeu91Dms
  16. While undoubtedly unintentional, thank you nonetheless for the best laugh I've had in some time.
  17. Say it isn't so. "How Donald Trump reacted to the London Bridge and Finsbury Park attacks" (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/heres-difference-how-donald-trump-10648523) But not just towards the UK. Here's his turn regarding a prominent Canadian incident a few months back: "Trump faces backlash over social media silence" (http://globalnews.ca/news/3225122/donald-trump-tweets-quebec-city-mosque-shooting/) Perhaps they don't fit the platform of fear that has become popular? "Van plows into crowd near London mosque" "...the driver got out of the van and shouted he wanted to "kill Muslims." He was pinned by the crowd and detained until police arrived. The mosque's imam is being credited with preventing the angry mob from attacking the driver." (http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/finsbury-mosque-london-van-1.4166790)
  18. Interestingly enough, you seem to be right. By a slim majority, Veterans Favor Trump. Although, as noted in the story, veterans tend to be white (78%), male (92%) and older (49% over 65). All three of those demographics tend to favor Trump. (from your link) "54% of people who had served in the U.S. military at any time approved of Trump’s job performance" (coupled with) "veterans continue to be more conservative, with a majority (56%) either identifying as Republican or leaning toward the GOP" Is he even holding his own among his veteran supporters?
  19. How much better even if one turned out to be an atheist and the other a practicing Muslim?
  20. Unfortunately Jerry, that would just lead to even more parsing of words. As in; "I did not have sexual relations with that woman". Regards John
  21. I'm a bit puzzled by the "leaker" condemnations. Disclosing your own written record/document(s) of an unclassified meeting is now considered a leak? How is Merriam-Webster ever going to stay current with all the new definitions coming out of the WH? "Fake news". "Alternative facts". Good lord, please stop manipulating the language.

from the statement: I had a person in my life for a time that I documented every private conversation we had. After he departed my company he attempted to bring suit for wrongful dismissal. After seeing copies of my notes, his lawyer convinced him to drop it. Fascinating.
